    This is a very old vid I made, but ya, guards are supposed to be sturdy for sure, and so is the tang and handle. There are TONS of variations... you can't even count them all! But the main point is, can your skills use the sword's design? or are you still looking for a sword to fit your skills? That is a big question.

    I see your point as the handguard is made of brass I assume which is pretty heavy unless it is cast iron. What sword manufacture would you recommend for starting training with a jian? Btw great info subscribed and look foward to more great videos.

    For training, well, I recommend not a "brand" but really have to FIND a good sword for you instead. A lot of the dragonwell stuff is okay if not put to cutting and abuse. They are great for practice and durable if you know how to upkeep them well. A lot of the good ones cost about $100 range and they are way better than using a plastic sword for sure.

    Stainless steel swords are made for beginners for just doing forms, they are not meant to be use for cutting or anything, usually they come blunt and are ONLY meant for doing forms, if you chop stuff with it, I guarantee it will break or wrecked in no time.

    Would you recommend a high grade abs plastic for training as well? I know there is usually weight issues but I usually get a dummy blade before I invest in a historically accurate replication.

    Great, i have been searching for a blunt jiàn but with good balance and weight that corresponds to a real sword, I have a good sharp sword that i am very pleased with but i don't want to practice with that especially not when i do applications. I do have a good wooden sword (yes there are good wooden swords, raven studio makes some in the us for instance), but i'd like a blunt metal sword for daily practice that has a relly nice weight and balance for form and some simple application and drill practice. Can you recommend any such sword?

    I'm a big believer that if you are truly a Kung Fu practitioner you should practice with live real swords to feel what a swords really feels like or you are just fooling yourself. Not only that but if you practice with fake stuff and then you get a real sword you will feel awkward.

    Mike Lee CS Gims are all sharp but they are good if you don't mind. I have all 3 and the best one to start with is the most basic GIM model, because the folded steel ones are too delicate for first sword. Monosteel is the way to go for a practice or even beater sword.

    one more thing ! Jian shu is not called sword btw it's called Knife for your information and it's purpose is to be little flixie in order prevent braking easily and also they don't use the single jian to slice into half like the japanese sword ! Jian are more likely used to cut the tendon and of wrist and reach with it's flexibility to smaller part of human body like eye, adam apple, heart . you need to study more before you judge other styles. every style is unique . God bless you ;)

    --Ive heard it referred to as a Yue fae Dao--but as with many things concerning chinese names and history it is difficult to trust due to the many misunderstandings and translations (and nobody Ive talked to has heard of it).....Also I have a question concerning "Dao" being used frequently for sword, has this any relation or connection to the commonly understood "dao" or are they different characters and sounds entirely?

  • @Chiinnature

    @Chiinnature

    10 жыл бұрын

    Jakk Lyman Not really, Chinese is Chinese. Dao is mandarin for saber or single edge blade. Cantonese is DOE. It just means a knife.

  • @jakklyman7644

    @jakklyman7644

    So how would you know Dao for sword from Dao/Tao for Daoism?--Other than context (Im assuming the chinese characters are different, but the sounds and english translations seem the same)

  • @Chiinnature

    @Chiinnature

    10 жыл бұрын

    Jakk Lyman In Cantonese, DOE for knife and DOE (low tone) for Taoism. Mandarin? The word for knife, DAO sounds like DA-OW, and the word for Taoism, Dao, sounds like DA-R, sound lower. So by knowing the up and down soundings at the end, you can tell right away, and it's quite obvious too. Like SHIT and SHEET, LOL!!! Yes, the sound is similar but wording is completely different. In Mandarin there are 4 sounds to a word. Cantonese have 14 sounds, and that is why I always tell people to skip Mandarin and learn Cantonese. That fuckin language is lame. Mandarin can't even work properly with Chinese ancient literature like poems, because the dialect is a slave dialect from the Manchurian to WASH OUT our Chinese language! fuck them....

    Thank you for that info, I really want to learn chinese (Cantonese), but was told to learn Mandarin (though I always had this feeling or picked up the idea somewhere that Mandarin was culturally invasive)--you are the first to provide me with some useful knowledge on that. Ive been essentially a wanderer since I was 12, self educated outside compulsory school--I dont watch TV--the point is, the things I study I must find on my own, sometimes instruction is really helpful--being left to discover everything on my own can create appalling gaps in my knowledge. I just began teaching myself Mandarin (from youtube tutorials) but it looks now like I need to find a good source to learn Cantonese---everybody has always tried to dissuade me from it, Im glad I have a good reason to learn it)...especially because a part of the reason Id like to learn (and then read and write) is to read Chinese literature. What exactly is or was the Manchurian--Ill be googling it but Id like to understand from your perspective. Also, if one speaks Cantonese, just how different is Mandarin, do the have close roots or are they as different as a romance language from a germanic one? Do you speak both? Sorry for so many questions, but Ive been isolating myself working land and taking care of animals--not speaking much with people, let alone someone who could answer these questions. thank you!

  • @Chiinnature

    @Chiinnature

    Jakk Lyman I am a speaker of both, but Cantonese is my native, and Mandarin is so-so kinda level. I once lived in China (Beijing and Xian) for a while for summer camp and survived! The main thing is, if you know how to READ Chinese, you can understand and communicate with people who speak Cantonese/Mandarin by writing, but not by speaking. Speaking is totally different, and writing is the same kind of characters... so we can talk on forums and stuff online with no problems, just that they have some weird China-slangs and swearing that you don't even understand without being in their social circles... Learn Cantonese is keeping the dignity of a real Chinese! LOL! Manchurians took over China and fuck the real Chinese down south, and they so wanted to wash out the Chinese culture and make it their own. Even the government today is very corrupted and so want to wash out the Chinese stuff too. Weird trend, and I am not going to China anytime in my life! hate that fucking place, it's so damn dirty and corrupted!

    Historically, "剑术" were somewhat more robust, not always the elegant gentleman's duelling styles. Some older style 剑 would likely have been able to remove a limb. Gripping over the guard aids point control for thrusts, but could hurt your finger in a fuller cut; both work, but 武术's ignores some of these details. Modern-day 武术 is becoming less like combat and more like what you called it, an art form that focuses on beauty and spirit. That's fine, but like you said, there are other styles. (2/2)

    hahaha.. old = good, that is one illusion. Many modern sword is BETTER than old stuff because the metal work nowadays is better than in the ancient time.. but then, you have to pay a fortune for good swords. Good modern swords are about $400 and up. nothing much that goes under that. (USD)

Im going to use that to carefully learn sword play....but I think, in the end, my heart is with the Pudao. Im sure it would all be easier if i had a good teacher in my area....but there are so many good tutorials, Ive got the time and the patience.

    Jakk Lyman Um... 1095 AND inexpensive? Mind to share a link? seems not so legit. Anything battle ready or 1095, sharpened, should be around the $300 and up price range. Anything below that is mostly a scam or a lemon from China's Long Chuan's crap forge.

    Your wushu is very impressive, and yes, swords are kind of a pointless weapon nowaday. However 刀 and 剑 is can both mean sword or knife; 剑 has more of a martial meaning though, so it's still accurate. Some practice with swords not for artistry or exhibition, but to touch the physicality of ancient warriors. For that, we need swords that are close to the originals in dimension. Sadly, following the Cultural Revolution, a lot of gongfu was lost, a lot was reduced to exercise or exhibitionism. (1/2)

    Cool, $20 for 2 swords? What the heck is going on in this world, you got such good luck or they are actually junk? Better try them out by smacking some cans and see if the edge will chip, if they do, they are not genuine. Real swords that are hardened will not chip or nick when hit a steel can at 90 degree, it cuts into it. I tried with mine (which are sharpened).
