Chinese students abroad are in despair: Parents are bankrupt and have no money for School!
#chinainsights
The Chinese government's extreme lockdown measures during the three-year epidemic and its crackdown on private enterprises in recent years have led to many small and medium-sized business owners going bankrupt. As a result, their children studying overseas are trapped with no money to pay for their education. Today we will talk about this issue.

It's not like every other US college student. It's actually illegal to work with a student visa in the US during semesters unless it's a short-term internship *directly* related to their program of study approved by the university to count for credit, so the only real options are under-the-table cash-paying jobs with massive consequences to both the student and the employer if caught (fines, jail time, deportation etc.). Also, most financial aid and scholarship options that can help US students in need aren't available to international students. Their only options are to either take out a loan (which no bank will approve them for since they're considered too risky i.e. they can run away and go back to China instead of paying, plus they can't even get a social security number for work-authorization related reasons), or go home. It's not even close to every other US college student, especially those paying in-state tuition with pell grants who have the option to legally work during the semesters or get approved for a loan.

I went back to school in my thirties and worked 2 jobs, one was as the on-site caretaker at a horse stable. The stable was on agricultural lease land - land that the government has set aside for farming, it cannot legally be used for commercial or residential property. The land was owned by a family in China who were holding on to it until the laws changed so they could sell it to condo developers. The house and barns on the property were falling apart - plumbing regularly failed, the roof was ready to fall in any time. The daughter of the owners lived locally and any time we wanted to improve or change anything we had to talk to her - it would take her weeks to get back to us and she only spoke English in the very loosest sense of the word. About a year after I finished school and had moved on, the owners raised the rent too much and forced the stable out. I wonder if these people are among the struggling speculators of China now?

What people don’t understand is having student visas in the US means you aren’t allowed to get paid to work because they present proof of income that they can afford to study without working to get a student visa. Even paid internships requires a lot of paperwork. Foreign students that you see working are most likely working under the table. The UK is different because they do allow students to work if it’s related to their studies and only for 20 hrs a week maximum
