On February 12, 1958, Mao Zedong, leader of Communist China, signed a decree to exterminate the country's "four pests" - rats, mosquitoes, flies and sparrows. This campaign eventually led to mass starvation and entered environmental textbooks in many countries around the world as an example of human disturbance of the ecological balance.
