chinese shoe patcher clean up and my 2 cents

My plan was always to get an industrial sewing machine. I decided to start with one of theses machines. This way I'll have the ability to sew off grid when and if I start to travel. This video explains the touch ups I did to mine and some of the bumps in the road I came across. All in all I think it was a good investment for how crude and inexpensive the machine is.

Thank you for the video. It helped me decide to purchase one and use it to repair my outdoor gear. Takes work, but it is a neat machine to have. I didn't learn until after purchasing one for around $115 that Bantamsaddletack sells one for around $200 which is reportedly cleaned and tuned. Just another option for those of us exploring this machine. They also have spare parts for the machine, and so far the ones I received were nicely cleaned.

On my machine, I used a hobby brush (round plastic brush @ Walmart $1.00 for 10) and applied Lucas Red thick n tacky bearing grease on all the moving parts. I used liquid bearings synthetic machine oil applied to the oil ports. Mine runs smooth.

you back stitch by either turning the work piece around OR turn the ears that line up the feed foot. The foot will turn in the opposite direction to sew in the other direction

Hey man, i have been able to run 277 thread with a 25 needle going tru 4 layers of veg tan. Don’t cut your needles. Put them in and then loosen the needle bar at the top and adjust until you can just feel the needle comming out of the bottom of the bed. These are some of the needles i run on mine: Groz-Beckert 134 - Size 160 / 23 - D Point - a.k.a. 134 KKD, 135x8 TRI - 10 Pack NDL-718212 Groz-Beckert 134 - Size 200 / 25 - LR Point - a.k.a. 134 KK, 135x8 RTW - 10 Pack NDL-715162

I got one and tried a lot before getting it to stitch. Ultimately had to go to a stronger thread, I probably was asking the original thread to do too much. Two layers of 8 ounce veg tan is outside of the thread range provided with the machine. Be prepared to get stronger thread a needles if you plan on doing anything moderately heavy. That being said once you get it sorted it stitches nice and beats hand stitching everything.

Wood gun stocks and pistol grips are not *jimped,* they are *checkered.* They have *checkering.* *Jimping* is placed on the spine (back) of a knife blade to assist in thumb placement & control - not to be confused with *file-work,* which is on the blade springs of a folding knife for a decorative feature. Proper words and phrasing can change a lot when doing instructional presentations. Just an idea.💡

Thank you for your input. I know the difference between checking and jimping. I use the same file for both. I call it a jimping file because that is primarily what I use it for. Technically they are calling Swiss pattern files. Some people refer to call them different names for their primary purpose.
