Chinese MMA fighter Xu Xiaodong's biggest fight

The 41-year-old mixed martial arts fighter Xu Xiaodong has been a controversial figure in China ever since he became famous for beating up what he called "fake" kung fu masters.
Unafraid to talk about almost anything or anyone, his brash attitude has brought him stardom but also unexpected - and unwelcome - knocks on his door. In November, the MMA fighter set out to prove that he's more than a tough guy who dared to challenge a cherished Chinese tradition.
Inkstone follows Xu (@xuxiaodong1979 ) as he fights the biggest fights of his career, for fame and freedom.

As a tai chi instructor myself, I’m glad that he called out all these fake martial artists and charlatans. I have only ever taught tai chi to adults & elderly for exercise & health benefits ONLY … I wouldn’t dream of teaching it for self-defense or fighting. That would be putting people in danger. What Xu did was right. When it comes to training to fight & defending yourself, people need a dose of reality and truth not false confidence.

I agree that fake martial arts should be ridiculed but just because a professional MMA fighter who lives to fight can beat up a Karate black belt or teacher doesn't mean Karate is ineffective. Most people learn martial arts to help them be able to defend themselves against normal bullies and in that regard it can be quite effective. A professional boxer or MMA fighter won't just wipe out martial artists but would wipe out any trained soldiers well. Try sending a Navy Seal into the ring or octagon, they would get absolutely crushed.

As somebody who has learned Yang style Tai Chi (the stuff Waterbending in Avatar was inspired by) as martial art from a traditional instructor: I totally support what Xu Xiaodong is doing. I deeply respect him and consider him a very strong - and very brave - person. In my opinion, the most useful things I've learned from Tai Chi are balance, posture, understanding of leverage, and control over my core muscles; my instructor put a great deal of emphasis on learning the musculature involved in throwing a proper punch, etc. Sadly there was no free-contact sparring, but the practical applications of various deflections and whatnot were also demonstrated and drilled; things like how to respond to a hook punch, and so on. That being said, I totally look forward to learning a more efficient, practical fighting style such as MMA when I have the opportunity to do so; I originally intended to do that in spring 2020, but we all know how that turned out. I do not doubt that what I've learned would be useful against an untrained person, but I doubt I could win a fight against anybody who actually knows what they're doing. I'm glad that I was able to move from a more rural part of the world (where I was lucky to find any instructors who knew their shit) to a major city; looking forward to doing research on my various options after life is back to normal. Anyway, everything I was taught from my instructor - who was totally upfront about it - lead me to the conclusion that Tai Chi is specifically intended to provide efficient responses against, for example, drunk people who start fights in bars. But it deeply bothers me that I've never had the opportunity to do free-contact sparring, and as such I have no way of knowing how capable of defending myself I'd actually be in practice (fortunately I haven't been in any serious fights). This is another reason I really look forward to learning a more practical art; I want to know the precise limits of how well I can defend myself and my loved ones if a serious fight does happen. In the end, I practice martial arts both to conquer my own weaknesses and bad habits, and so I am able to defend myself to the best of my ability. But I'm not getting any younger, and I'm dissatisfied with Tai Chi in the way I learned it; my conjecture is that Tai Chi is best used as a supplement to other, more practical forms of combat such as boxing, MMA, judo or whatnot, but even that is something I can't be sure of until I've found a good teacher and got some sparring under my belt.

Thing is, every martial arts teaches all those things - balance, posture, physics behind everything. So you don't need any traditional bullshido to learn these things. Anyway, both boxing and MMA should be easy to find. And these 2 are the most practical MAs there are. Boxing is faster to learn since it has way less moves. so you can focus practicing them first, while MMA might be a bit overwhelming, but again depends on your trainer.

Do yourself a favour, learn a ground game sport: BJJ, Wrestling, etc, and one stand up sport: Kick Boxing, Mauy Thai, Boxing, Judo, etc. Then learn what your more proficient in, and utilize the other martial art as a means to counter and set up what your most proficient in. Eg, a wrestler learns how to take a punch and read when one is coming so he can anticipate and time his takedowns accordingly. MMA is such a broad spectrum of a sport, it’s best to walk in with the understanding of the elements it entails.

tai chi or other traditional martial arts are killing skills in ancient times, in today's society they rarely are useful in real fight because ccp delete the pratical form to maintain stability of society. So martial arts in today are routines and lack actual combat ability. And many practical forms or killing skills were extinct because of wars and cultural revolution
