    Synthetic division is much easier since we only need to find x-x0= 0; to reduce all higher order polynomial to zero order. Here we only need to solve 9x+1/3x=sqrt(6) to obtain x0 =sqrt(6)*(1 +/- i )/18. Here x^40 -> remainder (x^40 /(x-x0)) . This gives= x^40 = 2.3590e-29 => (1 /x^40) = 4.2391e+28 -> (x^40 +1/x^40) = 4.2391e+28+ 2.3590e-29 ~4.2391e+28

    Nice solution, but it was not necessary to divide by 3 at first place.

    I agree with you. Just squaring both sides.

    More straightforward solution is to calculate x1,2 = (sqrt(6)/180. (1 +- i). Then (1 +-i)^4=4 !!! This eliminates i.
