Chinese leather sewing machine

This is the Chinese Leather Shoe Patcher I purchased on Amazon for $115 (USD). I made a motor drive base for it but kept the machine portable so I can take it to motorcycle events.

    Absolutely brilliant, and executed very well. I love seeing how others come up with different ways of fixing the same problem.

    Нужно очень быть аккуратным - цепью может ампутировать пальцы на руках. Нужно устанавливать защитный щиток на такой привод.

    I really like the base. Is there any chance of a video of how you put it together, or maybe a description or a rough sketch. Thanks

    It's just some angle iron pulled from scrap metal welded together to form a rectangle to fit the sewing machine base I made. The bright metal channel is used to hang conduit and plumbing pipes from walls and ceilings. Special nuts twist lock in place to hold brackets. I fabricated brackets to hold the drill in place on the channel and also a bar to hold the sewing machine on the base. I made it all to allow easy adjustment when bolting it all down.

    @@n4zou sorry I wasn't real clear. While I like the frame on the sewing machine table, amazing what you can do with angle iron and unistrut. :) What I meant to ask about was the base you have attached to the bottom of the sewing machine itself. After playing with pause and zoom I think I have the assembly figured out but would appreciate knowing what size stock you made the main body and the 2 "feet" out of. Thanks again for sharing your great work.

    It's easy. There are two wires, neutral and hot. The neutral wire is white on the power coming in and the hot wire can be any color. The white neutral wire is never disconnected from the appliance while it's plugged in. That only leaves the hot wire. There are just two wires on the foot control and it doesn't make any difference how they are connected. All you do is cut the hot wire, connect one of the wires to one of the hot wire ends, and the other end of the foot control wire to the other hot wire just as if you were putting in an on/off switch in the hot wire. It's an on/off switch with a speed control built in.

    @@n4zounow are we talking about cutting into the drill’s cord to cut and connect or are we cutting into the extension cord to cut and connect? I can seem to find that particular fort pedal. Is there any that you’d recommend?

    @@randolphchappel6098 no cutting wires. I use a double 115 volt outlet. The tab connecting the brass colored or hot wire is broken off separating the outlets. The white colored side is the neutral line and the tab is left in place so the neutral wires are common to both outlets. The foot control goes across the hot line like it's an on/off switch, which it kinda is except it also varies the voltage going to the motor to also control it's speed. The outlet is wired so the motor plugs into one outlet and the speed control plugs into the other outlet so both can be unplugged when removing the motor and on, off, and speed control. You must label which is which. Antique Singer as well as other brands of sewing machines did the same thing.

    @@n4zou it’s still a bit confusing. I look at the video and stop it on the power box and see the plug plugged on the left side. The cords are wrapped around the box. 1. Is it wired internally with the switch leads wired to the isolated brass connectors (screws)? Where does the power source come in to this set up?

    Yes! That's one of the reasons I purchased mine. I need to recover a motorcycle saddle and make a new cover for my Sidecar. I plan on using the same material for both so they match.

    Great video! Do you recommend the one that comes with a motor? Runs about $250

  • @n4zou

    @n4zou

    Жыл бұрын

    No! Do not buy that one. It uses a direct drive sewing machine motor. It will run way too fast. These sewing machines need to run slow as the design was copied from a 19th century Singer leather sewing machine so the way the bobbin and needle spin the thread over and around the top of the rotating bobbin needs to operate more slowly than a rotating hook system invented about a half century later and still used on modern machine's. That's the reason I used a drill as it has a reduction gear in it plus an additional 4.4 to 1 reduction between the drill and handwheel. 4.4 to 1 means the small 10 tooth sprocket on the drill turns 4.4 times around before the handwheel sprocket attached to the handwheel makes 1 turn around, and one complete stitch.

    @@n4zou thank you so much for the reply. Seemed easier since I’m not as knowledgeable as you are to build the awesome motor drive you have. I’m looking to do small and big projects like the jacket in your video. Can you provide the actual maker/brand you have?

    @@aamberneal5577 all those machines come from the same factory that sells them by the pallet. The seller's on Amazon buy them wholesale from the factory and do the work to sell them on Amazon. It's really a crap shoot if you get a "good one" that only needs a little work but all of them need work. I like fixing and building things and I needed a sewing machine that could sew heavy material, so I took the risk of buying one. If I couldn't do that I would suggest Bantam Saddle Tack and pay a little more for the same Sewing machine. They buy them by the pallet, clean them up, inspect and do all the extra work to make it a good sewing machine. You spend more but you get a good machine. They also have Parts for them in case you need to repair it later. As for a motor drive system, I made one just because I could and I'm the type of person that must stay busy doing something as I have Asperger's Syndrome. I would have been perfectly happy using it without a motor drive but Asperger's kicked in and you see the result lol. I'm old so the motor helps with long stitches but the motor drive is not really needed. If I was young and healthy I wouldn't bother with it at all. If you have Facebook there is a group for people with a Chinese Leather Shoe Patcher and is very helpful. You could join it and read all the posts before buying one before taking the plunge into owning a CLSP.

    @@n4zou I really appreciate your insight and quick response. I guess I was over analyzing the details / descriptions on Amazon. I’m a licensed cosmetologist had carpal tunnel surgery a few years ago which is the reason I was looking for a motorized one. Guess I was spoiled by my computerized embroidery machine. My oldest is 30 so yes I’m fairly healthy lol. Saddle track delivery was end of February so I just purchased one off Amazon arrives tomorrow. I will take your advice and join the FB group. Good luck to you.
