Saw some interesting comments under this video, I feel I need to say something about Chinese Classical dance... Chinese Classical dance is, undoubtedly, a kind of reconstructive dance which was established during 20th century. It employs the body training method of ballet. Most of the movements come from Kongfu and Chinese Opera, as well as some historical artwork. There are generally 4 kinds of disciplines in Chinese Classical dance. Dun Huang Dance 敦煌舞，which based on some ancient wall painting at 敦煌莫高窟, emphasizes static postures and a lot of time the dancer would uses silk ribbons. The most special one among these four. Han Tang Classical dance 漢唐古典舞， which the dancer put more emphasis on their shoulder and waist, twisting their bodies to the sides, and gives an unstable, flowing feeling, this dance is Han Tang style. Xi Qu Classical dance 戲曲古典舞， Xi Qu means Chines Opera so the style, as you can tell from the name, is the closest to Chinese Opera. A lot of special hand postures from the Opera. Neoclassical, 新古典舞, still preserve the esthetics of Chinese Classical dance, but more like modern dance. The movements are not as classical and elegant as the other three, but it can express a more variety of emotion. There is nothing wrong with calling a reconstructive dance Chinese Classical Dance. First of all, it is created by Chinese people, and based totally on Chinese aesthetics. Although it employs the training method from ballet and borrow some leg movements(you can tell some jumping skill are borrowed from ballet), but it’s nothing like ballet. The aesthetics is totally different. people who like to watch ballet can tell at the first glance. Second, it is classical. Very classical, very elegant. Then there is nothing wrong with calling it Chinese Classical Dance. Another words at the end. Chinese culture is not something that’s kept in history museum, rather, it’s alive, it’s changing. We are keeping it updated. No matter how old a culture is, it needs updating, or otherwise it is lying inside the tomb. Now people have already made some excellent Chinese Classical Dance Opera. Although employing a lot of new stuffs, but the core is still very Chinese. I see a new way in which Chinese culture can continue to thrive.

This is NOT classical ballet. I say that as someone who took it. There is no turn out .. in all the back bends they turn to the side to make their backs look way better than they are .. this is a totally diff way of making a line look good. I would say its way less abrasive on the body. Ballet dancers would be offended because this in a way is easier than what they do. But its way more inventive and goes with the body more.

Very pretty and just plain cute. It's amazing how, with all the violent head movement, her hair and its adornments stayed in place! A very pretty piece and very well done - the dancer AND the instrumentalists.

"Drunken Empress" that,what is called. The similar figure clothes, make up and fashions are likely according to pottery figure found from Tang Dynasty grave. Dance is really a physical challenge at best. But I like it in more expressive way in Beijing Opera.

Out of all the Chinese classical dance videos on this site, for some reason this remains my favorite, solo or otherwise. I hope this dancer got other accolades if she didn't win this particular competition :D

@maniacram It would be wrong for people to say that just because there are techniques involved in this dance that contemporary/ballet dancers would be able to do it. No they can't. Chinese dance in general is extremely precise. The emphasis is to turn emotions inward until it fills your entire body. Unlike contemporary dance in which bigger movement means more emotion, often in Chinese dance it's the tiny movements that shows emotions. So you don't end up with explosive movements but flowy ones.

I just wanted to say this is so beautiful i do classical western ballet i was so moved:-)!! I put a Chinese poem that for some reason reminded me of it:-) Thank you from Ireland:-) I feel this comes from the place of moonlight and magic fairies and spirits:-) Then when i take my own dance classes i remember how cruel and tough to dance! Beauty through suffering but to appear free and effortless and spiritual this is like this:-) Chinese dance has so many levels thanks you:-)

I admire the sublime grace with which this dancer expresses the sorrow of a betrayed concubine in a drunken reverie, it's all so surreal!

Lets just appreciate the art. This is definitely no traditional Chinese dance. It say its a contemporary dance with a cultural/historical flare. It is completely new. The dancer expressed the feeling of the concubine beautifully, really like it.

The title of this dance is "The Inebriated Consort (Yang Guifei)".

@maniacram You probably think that only dances with fans, handkerchiefs and ribbons are Chinese dance. They are, but they belong to folk dance. Folk and Classical forms both have their roots from thousands of years ago, it's just that folk dance originate from the customs and lives of ordinary people, whereas Classical chinese dance came from dance styles from thousands of years ago, wushu, and Peking Opera. Hence why folk dance seems more "earthy" and classical seems more elegant.

this is my favorite dance of all the dances I've seen. (And I've seen a lot!)

@maniacram Yes Russians brought ballet to China, but that doesn't mean that we rejected our culture. Far from it. The Cultural Revolution actually made dance flourish. Multiple dance academies opened at that time, and the best of the best toured around the country. My dance teacher was trained at that time by the best Chinese dance and ballet teacher that China had. If Louis XIV saw ballet today, he'd think that it's freaky too, doesn't mean it's not ballet, just that the dance form progressed.

@sugarsweet87 When people of one culture adopt the practice of another, obviously it will not be a 100% perfect adaption. The South Americans created Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the process of learning Jiu-Jitsu from Japanese. The hand steps and body movements here look more intricate, however if you need a trained eye to tell apart the differences then it doesn't mean that it is vastly different either. It is a fact that these people prepare by learning ballet as ballet is very popular in china.

@maniacram Furtermore, the dancer is Chinese and this competition took place in China. Taoli competition is a very prestigious competition that takes place every three years. Only the best of the best professional Chinese dance dancers are allowed to qualify and compete.

Beautiful! Similar to Indian classical in the sense it tells a story or describes a situation..and the dancer uses both movement and facial expression to emote..

Almost every Chinese Classical Dance has a historical story with it. If Contemporary/ballet dancers don't know the story, they can't perform Chinese dance well. This dance present important history of Tang Dinasty, the king love his wife - this drunk lady so much, stay with her all the time, don't care about his country, and finally lead Tang Dinasty falled.

@maniacram There are different disciplines. Chinese dance is a giant umbrella that encompasses Classical, Folk, and Ethnic. Classical is differentiated into different time period. Folk is differentiated by region. Within Ethnic, there are 56 different styles. If you think is that all dance to us is just ballet, then you are mistaken. Google Taoli competition and see what comes up. Taoli competition is the most prestigious dance competition in China, and it's all Chinese dance, no ballet at all.

@Astrathiul It is call Hanfu. 汉服 (in Mandarin). You can google to find vary design according to different dynasty. The dancer hear wear the dynasty Tang 唐 (in Mandarin).

@maniacram Contemporary/ballet dancers in general aren't trained to turn their emotions inward, so when they try to do Chinese dance, they can't their eyes to communicate, or understand how a teeny breath can make the difference between a flat movement with no emotions and one that's filled with feelings. So when they do Chinese dance, it looks rough and has "no taste, no feelings", as we would say it. I hope this helps you to understand how Chinese dance is an entirely different discipline.

@vivspring Also ballet went West to East, from France & Italy to Russia. The Russians brought it to china in the 1930s. After your cultural revolution of the 60s when you guys rejected your own culture, ballet flourished. You guys added a little local flavor to suit the costumes. If the ancient Chinese saw this, they would be thinking, "Huh.... freaky!!", because these dances wouldn't suit their aesthetics. It is more like athletics than dance. Search "learn chinese dance", see what comes up.

@maniacram But this is Chinese dance. It's not adopted from somewhere. I should know because I study the folk, ethnic, and classical forms of Chinese dance. This is classical Chinese dance, which looks very different from folk and ethnic, but it's still Chinese dance. The roots of classical Chinese dance came from thousands of years ago, it's not something adopted. The techniques are very different from ballet, and the central belief of how the body should move is the opposite from ballet.

@maniacram Please don't insult this dance. If you are familiar with Chinese dance you'd see that this is a classical Chinese dance. I'm not going to bother explaining the differences between Chinese classical dance and contemporary dance, but you'd be able to find many examples of both on youtube. It's insulting when you declare that something with thousands of years of history and subtlety is the same as something that just popped up recently.

@maniacram to the untrained eye, you may think that it looks similar to contemporary dance because you've never been exposed to Chinese dance. It's like someone who thinks that African dance is the same as hiphop. But how the movements are initiated, the detail in the hands, the difference in how the body moves (everything is initiated by breaths, as opposed to contemporary where breaths aren't needed) makes Chinese dance very different to watch as well as to dance compared to contemporary.

Women danced before the bound feet trend started, that was where classical chinese dance started, after their feet were bound in the Tang Dynasty, dancing and entertaining was more of a male/ theater production thing save for the ethnic tribes which didn't need to stick to such conventions (:
