America is 24% English, 19% other European, 17% Latino, 19% German, 13% African, 8% Asian, and 2% mixed race. I do see how so many people still don’t accept others in America still and it’s sad. It’s happens cause of people’s races, it happens because of people showing their political opinions, and just people in general in America don’t trust each other. I can definitely say that just 4 years ago we barley had any Asian American hate crimes or any of this feeling of this person’s white so they are racist or, this persons black so they are dangerous. But now so many of them are rising right now. It’s sad to seeing it all happen so fast at the same time.

A Chinese European here. Here in the Netherlands asians are in the minority. Most of racism against Chinese people are micro-aggressions/racial "jokes" that are perceived as "innocent"! Most people don't realize its hurtful and since we are in the minority we feel quite powerless. Since the pandemic hit there has been more focus on Asians and we see a rise in racism as well (although not as bad as in the USA, since its mostly verbal). Because of this we have started to become more outspoken on this issue, but its still a hard since we are not used to speak out on this topic. I am currently also learning how to deal with it... I am very worried about the current micro-agressions towards asians to result in violence like in the states since I feel like every trend from US will eventually be picked up here in the NL. From what I hear from friends, I also feel like the hate crime towards asians is worse in UK and in France compared to the NL. But thats my perception.

“I grew up being taught to be quiet and ignore racism/discrimination”. I personally reckon this is the root problem. When people are complaining about existing education system for its lack of attention or emphasis on Asian Americans (or Chinese Americans etc.), we should also look into ourselves. It takes two hands to clap. I can somehow understand why immigrants of older generation taught their kids that way, but reality proves that their kids could be taught better than that (quiet, submissive you know what I mean). Let’s start with our generation!! Teach our kids to stand up for yourself when being treated rudely, racially taunted & discriminated, or even assaulted. Simple fact is bullies or attackers do not pick on those who can defend themselves. Simply too much work.

  • @aznmochibunny

I believe a lot of the hush hush about not speaking about discrimination in the past was due to the fact that in the early 1800's, there was anti-Chinese immigration laws and many immigrated illegally to fulfill the American dream. I recently learned a lot of Chinese men in those days were able to immigrant through what was called the "paper sons" technique where they faked their identity to that of a son of an successful Chinese (because in those days, only "smart" immigrants were allowed in the country). If they were vocal about it then, than their immigration status (or lack thereof) would have been discovered. People were frightened in those days, and that sentiment was just passed down throughout the generations.

Don't be wishful thinking. Europeans always use some ugly information to publicize the negative impression of China. We can do the same, but it's not necessary. If your self-confidence comes from your industrial revolution or modernization process, so far, your social system is barbaric, which is fundamental, It determines the upper limit of achievements. See...the thing I noticed and I think what most people have forgotten is that if anything big that happens to the states, discrimination arises like crazy against certain groups, grouping them altogether like potential criminals. I'm pretty sure most of us remembered 9/11... When the US got attacked by terrorists (basically the destruction of the twin towers)...remember...the Al Qaeda... Afghanistan ...Israel... Palestine....Osama Bin Laden ...etc...yeah... When that happened...the middle Eastern people were all grouped and considered "terrorists" even when they're innocent. They were discriminated horribly and were aways suspected when on planes traveling...they were all separate, distinguished ethnicity with their own lives and yet they were all grouped under the same category.. terrorists...luckily this discrimination has died down since but it shows that this "pointing fingers" at innocent group of people and discriminating them will never end...it will only subside until another big thing happens and people will find a new target group to discriminate against... it's sad and it's a very hard thing to control and change...how many years has it been and yet we still can't accept each other and continue to group certain people as "bad?"

Without the Chinese Exclusion Act, there would have been more Chinese in America and less racism. You got the the chicken and egg wrong. The US was founded on the genocide of Native Americans who had been here since time immemorial. They are the only real Americans. Everyone else are latecomers. It’s the original sin that all present Americans need to atone for.

That comment about how during extreme times, people tend to look for scapegoats. It is scary times. The important thing is to be aware of your surroundings. I do agree that it's still very common for people to just assume Asians are just 1 nationality/ethnicity. A lot of people assume that Chinese and Asian are 1 in the same thing and people will assume you're Chinese if you're Asian. It's pretty scary and ridiculous that just because you're Asian, you're going to have to worry about getting attacked in public. A lot of things we see on the news are political and not necessarily applicable to everyday people.
