Chinelo's story: Uterine Fibroid Embolization

Chinelo suffered extreme exhaustion from heavy periods until she underwent uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital under the care of James Spies, MD. Dr. Spies is an internationally known expert and researcher in the field of fibroid embolization and has performed thousands of procedures like Chinelo’s. Her experience is similar to other women who have undergone UFE at MedStar Georgetown.

I am not here to scare anybody. But when you’re in severe pain and keep getting suspicious imaging like in your mri’s or ct scan. GET YOUR SURGERY ASAP. My mom has gone through the worse pain in these last few months. It all started when she noticed something hard in her stomach and we didn’t think anything of it but she felt something was wrong. So finally she went to the doctors and they said it was just fibroids. They found 3, one being the size of a grapefruit. They gave her Lurpon depot to perhaps shrink her fibroids... Little did we know....A week after her shot she did a full 360, she couldn’t walk, eat, use the restroom because she was in excruciating pain. After a few days we decided to take her to the emergency room. From there they did a ct scan and the er doctor said not to rule out cancer. Her gyno insisted it was just fibroids and boom we find out an oncologist was going to do her surgery to get these things removed. Boy was that a set back. We spoke to the oncologist and she said the surgery will be in a MONTH. A MONTH. ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME. They made it seem like it was just fibroids and that likely hood of it being cancer is not likely. But here we are speaking to the oncologist not sure if it is or isn’t and she had the audacity schedule her surgery in a month. The pain would come and go, her surgery was the 6 of August but her pain got so bad that they did an emergency surgery. Today we just found out it’s cancer and one of her “fibroids” grew another 4 cm, total of 14 cm with just one “fibroid”. No one should go through this, ask for MRI’s and ct scans. Me and my family are devastated.

It's has been a month for me since I got the procedure done. It has been nothing but a nightmare. None stop bleeding, cramps, swollen, excruciating pain...I would not recommend this procedure to anyone. I should've taken the uterus out. This has me emotionally and physically drained. Don't do it. I ended up with a necrotic infected fibroid stuck on my uterus, they scraped my uterus and cervix to get most of it out I feel like I'm dying

I see this treats the current fibroids in the Uterus but does this procedure prevent future fibroids from occurring/growing in the Uterus? Also what happens to the fibroids after they "die" ? Are they re-absorbed into the body or do they harden or become calcified ? What is the pain level on scale of 1 to 10 after the procedure and during recovery? Should a post menopausal woman who has several grape sized fibroids opt for this procedure or is it best to have Uterus hysterectomy. My current pain level using a few NSAID tablets every day is about a #2 to #3 and I have alot some abdominal bloat. Thanks in advance for your reply

From what I've read it is possible to have children after UFE. Most of the studies have been done on women over 40 who already had limited fertility BEFORE UFE. There hasn't been a study on women in their 20s and 30s and UFE. You have to assess the risk for yourself with your doctor.

@@PoM-MoM I had the procedure 6 months ago from the doctor in the video. I stayed overnight in the hospital and was on IV meds so I didn't feel very much pain. The worst part for me was right after when they want you to be extremely stil laying down for 2 hours. A friend of mine had it and she was in a lot of pain for 3 days. It really depends on the person. But I recommend triggering the IV meds regularly all night so that you never let the pain level rise.
