China struggles to care for ageing population after decades of one-child policy • FRANCE 24

With China set to have 400 million elderly people by 2035, authorities are trying to figure out how to take care of them. Family structures were transformed with the now defunct one-child policy. Even now, the birth rate continues to plummet. With the state pension fund drying up and less than one grandchild for four grandparents, who will take care of China's elders? FRANCE 24's Yena Lee and Katherina Tse report.

The policy of Chinese aging care is totally unsustainable, the retiring age is too low and the pension is too high. And it totally relys on young generation’s contribution. With the Chinese population structure collapses, the policy will also fall down eventually .

So far we here in China have done better than most Western countries for our elderlies. This video article was caring and hopeful. Most Western articles about China are condescending and patronising. There are challenges and difficulties that we face with an ageing population, but I have confidence in teh future here.

After my parents bought us to America 1981 my parents end up having a total of 8 boys and 3 girls. My father was an only son and orphan from a young age so he always wanted a large family. Today I am almost 50 I have 6 children and zero grandkids. I will b lucky if I even get one grandchild by the time I hit 70. The point is even our large family has become so little now. My kids are not dating or in any relationship (same as most all of my siblings). It is troublesome to think of old age and no one around but I worry more about my kids that they have no children at all.

The law mandates that adult children provide culturally expected support to their parents 60 years or older. Per the law, duties include frequent visits and sending greetings to attend to the spiritual needs of the elderly. The reporting mechanism relies on parents filing lawsuits against their children for neglect.

One of the things in the U.S. we are lack of is because kids raised up to be very independent on their own from very young they normally don’t normally take their parents in to live with them as they older .. rarely the ones that do is very admirable as you don’t see a lot here vs over sea especially Asian countries . Ideally on myself bc I have been taking care of my grandma to my parents most of my life I personally want to have my own little family of course I was left with no choice but to take my parents in . Honestly , everyone in my family has their own independence and no one share anything so is not much of diff . My kids love being around my parents and it teaches them to love n respect the elders in a respectful way and the best part is they grew up in this type of environment so when they have their own they don’t mind taking their wife or their in vs not ever exposed to them this . Really the most kind hearted peoples is the ones that grew up with the elders and they adjust better in real world vs the ones that not .

Going forward, there is worry about the care for the elderly in China, as well as in zzall other countries. Consumption in China is completely different from that in Europe and the United States. Europe and the United States cannot live without pensions, but China's savings rate is 37.8%, and the savings rate of the elderly is higher, so there will not be any big problems due to pensions.

Like I say ai is only good to help speed up n assist in healthcare but is not the solution for the elders . They don’t trained to use common sense . Like all tech giants come out claim AI is a threat but if it a threat why are you creating it at the same time and put in work atmosphere to make life more complicated for humans . I do believed in the future yeh ai is being used widely but right now we just got out of pandemic peoples barely survive why do you wants to destroy human in work place for ? Ai is moving in a directions that are too fast and human are not yet . China economics failed bc they use everything AI . That is facts . A lot of tech companies failed bc ai is moving too fast for them too .
