The Philippines are surrounded by ocean and yet they're ordered to go into neutral zone to create tension. Why? Philippines government should lift their people out of poverty instead taking order from the US. I saw videos where Filipinos living in the slum known as Happyland. There are also cases where Filipinos packed in the cemetery and the mouth watering scene where Filipinos picking up left over food in landfill to eat after recooking it. It's all on yt. A lot people don't know about this, including the Filipinos. When US defeated Spain and took over as the colonial master of the Philippines in 1898, these two countries signed the Paris Treaty of 1898. In it, both countries acknowledged that the territories of Philippines lied EAST of east meridian 118. The island in dispute? It lies west of east Meridian 118! It is really that simple. Philippine did not grab these island until after the San Francisco Treaty of 1951, from a still-militarily-weak China. But for the policy of “anyone but China” by the world’s hegemony, there should have never had any dispute in the South China Sea. And it wouldn’t be complete if I don’t include the fact that the USA bought the Philippines from Spain for $20,000,000 USD, right at the time when Filipinos were fighting for independence against Spain… obviously Filipinos didn’t take this lightly.

I understand why Philippines wants to claim the South China Sea islands. After all it’s very near the Philippines shores. But I have one question: since when the Philippines started to claim the islands? They were certainly not part of the Paris Treaty signed by Spain and the USA in 1898 which transferred the Philippines’ sovereignty from Spain to the USA, nor was it in the Mutual Defence Treaty of 1951 between the Philippines and the U.S.

You are wrong. The Murillo Velarde Map of the Philippine Islands published in 1734 already included the Spratleys as part of the territory of the Philippines. On the other hand, the 1937-1943 China Handbook published by the ROC Ministry of Information in 1943 which contained athe ofdicial map of China clearly shows that the Spratleys and the Paracel Islands were not part of China's claimed territory. It was only in the Expanded and Revised 1937-1943 China Handbook published by the ROC in 1947 that the Spratleys and the Paracels were claimed by China as part of its territory. In the same Expanded Handbook published in 1947, China admitted that the Spratleys were already being contested by the Commonwealth of the Philippines and Indo China. China's own clear admission absolutely destroys China's lies that the Philippines only recently forwarded claims over the Spratleys.

And the Treaty of Paris of 1998 was clarified in the Treaty of Washington of 1900 which states that what was ceded by Spain to the US also include territories lying outside of the boundaries defined in the Treaty of Paris of 1998. The same clarified that not only territories mentioned in the 1998 Treaty of Paris were being ceded by Spain but also territories lying outside the boundary lines stated in the Treaty of Paris. The US paid an additional 100,000 USD to Spain in line with the Treaty of Washington. And you can also Google the Murillo Velarde Map of 1734.

Yes. The Philippines is just fighting for what it is entitled to as per UNCLOS (200 NM EEZ), of which the PRC is also a signatory. But, the PRC greedily claims all of the SCS with its 9 dash line claim that overlaps not only Philippine EEZ but also other South East Asian states' EEZ. The Philippines is just being targeted primarily by the PRC now because the Philippines is a US ally and has relatively weak military. The Philippines is also in a very strategic position and is very close Taiwan.
