China's Freedom-Crushing "Social Credit Score"

In America, tech giants know a lot about us. John Stossel says that's fine with him.

He knows what information he's handing over and he does it voluntarily. But he says we should worry about becoming like China, where the government is starting to use online data to create 1984 in the real world.
China's government has announced that they'll assign a mandatory government "social credit score" to everyone in the country by 2020. It will be based largely on what you do online. Say something that gets censored, you lose points. Same if you watch porn, or are late in returning a rented bike or buy lots of alcohol.
China's government boasts that the social credit system will "allow the trustworthy to roam everywhere under heaven while making it hard for the discredited to take a single step."
"It is a big deal," says Li Schoolland, a Chinese-American libertarian activist who works with Chinese supporters of freedom.
The social credit system, she says, will expand to the whole country, what China already does to some government critics. Some of them are jailed. Some are never heard from again.
The government will expand the use of lesser punishments under the new program.
Schoolland explained to Stossel what will happen to people with low scores: "First [you lose] your job, or you never get promoted ... and your children cannot get into good schools."
America's government doesn't do anything like that, yet, but Stossel wonders about the future. Already, police in New Orleans, Los Angeles, and other cities practice "predictive policing." The tech company Palantir analyzes social media and phone location records, tracks people's ties to gang members, and predicts the likelihood that someone will commit a crime.
Still, Stossel says he's glad to be in America, where he can criticize the government on KZread, Twitter and Facebook.
He's never been punished for that.
So far.

The bigger we let the government get, the more power we let them have, the more likely they are to do things like this. The moral of the story is to keep the government small. It should be involved only in what's necessary. The rest is our business.

Litigious Society As small as is reasonably possible. I'm not sure that no government and no government control of anything is doable, defense and so on, but smaller and less intrusive is undoubtedly the way to go.

Charles Lumia It can be done, primarily through competition and agorism. Secession may be necessary step too, because I don't think fixing things at the federal level is possible, and the easier solution may be to allocate everything to the state then local levels, and finally replace them privately.

David Vanwinkle Y All those things would be handled through private, voluntary alternatives. The only difference is rather than people's money being taken by force through taxation to subsidize things they may or may not support, individuals would pay for the services they want and support themselves. There are plenty of videos and articles about Ancapistan, and how everything would work. Some things would obviously not be replaced, because they are useless or detrimental functions of the state, such as the Federal Reserve and the ATF.

Fortunately, the courts ruled that LA can't use that predictive software to enforce laws or prevent crime in anyway. A ruling just came out a few days ago where the LAPD used the software to find some gang members and forcibly separate them from each other, saying that they can longer associate in anyway whatsoever. They took the police to court and the judge ruled in favor of the gang members. The fact that this is happening in commiefornia however, speaks volumes of the current state of the political left in the US.

Obama's Netflix came out with an episode of "Black Mirror" which was subtitled "Nosedive." It was about this exact thing - your social media standing depended on thumbs-up or down from other users. A girl got too many thumbs-downs and lost her job. More thumbs downs and she lost her apartment (rent already paid notwithstanding). More downs and she couldn't purchase fuel for her personal vehicle. A few more downs and she was imprisoned for that reason alone. No trial, no process of any kind, just period. I'm curious whether Obama dreamed this up and drove it to his true homeland, or whether he just liked the idea so much he directed Netflix to idolize it in media.

We have the same thing going on in this country already. When insurance, jobs, banking, anything can be a result of your credit score. Even things that doesnt have anything to do with credit. The banking CARTELS want the power and the ability to ruin your life here, if you don't play by their rules. So what is the difference? Private or Government, it's all the same thing, when the end result is the same!

The more we move away from predicting others behavior, then the less we inhibit people. In fact suggesting other people are good tends to lead towards people doing good. Alright I was with you when you talked about concerns over lack of due process and privacy on things like a social score. Then you tried to string it to predictive policing. Something that doesnt do any of the previous l. Predictive policing simply does things like efficiently distribute police patrols into areas most at risk. While I see where you were trying to go with this, that point was lost. You need to better draw your connections to how this could affect or does affect Americans etc
