CHINA PACIFICS IN ACTION AND BEING SERVICED
This video features the both RM and SL classes of Pacific type 4-6-2's running on China's rail network in 1988. These were the closing days of the type as they were running out their service life. The last one would run in February 1991.

At that time, running steam locomotives to his extent was normal for China, but to the rest of the world outside of Asia, especially me and my fellow Americans, this was something else; the final frontier of a by bygone era when steam was king. But even the Chinese eventually gave up steam

If there is steam, hiding anywhere on the planet, the British route it out. Adverts for overseas steam tours jostled for space in the NUMEROUS British train fan monthly magazines, & STILL DO TODAY ! India, South Africa, Germany, France, Holland, Japan, Australia & New Zealand STILL being common destinations to ride behind steam. Mainly but not all are preserved steam tours. GERMANY - THE HSB STILL USES STEAM IN NORMAL SERVICE ! The Harz Mountain Railway (Harzer Smalspur Bahnen) in Central Germany, still uses steam on ALL its network lines all year round except Christmas day, on its regular scheduled services! This being a 100 mile network of metre gauge lines around the Harz Mountains. Which includes the line to the 4000ft summit of the famous Brocken Mountain !!! INDIA - THE DJR STILL USES STEAM INTO THE HIMALAYA's. In India the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway also runs some daily steam, through incredible scenery in the Himalayan foothills. BRITAIN - HUNDREDS OF WORKING STEAM LOCOS DAILY !!! In Britain itself there are a few hundred miles of "private steam railway" lines dotted about Britain, with regular services most of the year. These railways often have at least a few dozen steam locos in their fleets ! You will find thousands of Posts on KZread of British steam in action, operating TODAY. Yet further, Britain also allows larger preserved steam locos to operate on the National Network (mainly at weekends) on tours of a few hundred miles each. These mainline steam hauled trains hack along at an official maximum of 75mph. with trainloads of steam fans in many parts of Britain. The British love affair with steam means there are at least SEVEN HUNDRED fully functional preserved steam locos available, in addition to those in Museums ! Indeed Thousands of American steam train fans come to Britain to ride on such specials as the steam hauled "Royal Scotsman". Usually a 7-10 day super-luxury tour of Scotland.
So cool to see these operating the way they were intended to be used. Why do they have the flat panels on either side? Thought at first they might be some type of condenser, but doesn't look that way from the close ups in this video.

They’re smoke deflectors, they make use of the airflow around the train to redirect the funnel smoke from being blasted into the cab.

Do Steam engines in China have horns? Cause I am hearing a lot of horns instead of whistles.
Is this carousel at the Changchun Locomotive Depot? Why does it look so much like Mudanjiang Locomotive Depot?

Nice, an era of Chinese steam not often seen, I assume that China was not letting in much foreign visitors at that time, the Tianmen upraise still had to happen a year later. The old Manchuria stock has a quite North American style compared to the steel Soviet designed stock.

There were numerous organised British steam enthusiast tours every year during this era. The "Political" situation did NOT prevent such tours. Although at first the "authorities" had trouble understanding "we want steam" and tried to encourage these "steam fans" to look at their nice new diesels & Electrics. Don't forget the British love steam & we have HUNDREDS of operational preserved locos in Britain, on both private steam railways & National Mainline Network express steam tours all over Britain!!! There's probably a few dozen Posts DAILY on "KZread", of steam action in various parts of Britain in the previous few days. Both private Steam Railway & long distance Mainline tours. You'll find famous steam locos such as "Flying Scotsman" hacking along at 75mph racing modern Electric trains along the East Coast mainline (London to Edinburgh) for example !!!

Three of the RM's were saved, two in China and one went to Japan. The latter was sadly scrapped. I haven't looked into the SL's at all so not sure on survivors from that class.
