It's less furry than a traditional companion
but a six-legged Chinese robot "guide dog" could help the visually impaired live with more independence, according to its research team in Shanghai.
The robot dog, which is currently being field-tested, is able to navigate its physical environment via cameras and sensors.
It can recognise traffic signals, which traditional guide dogs are unable to do.
China has about 20 million visually impaired people and technology can help, says the lead researcher of the robot dog project.
The robot dog is roughly the size of an English Bulldog but a bit wider. It can communicate by listening and speaking with a visually impaired operator with AI-technology incorporated in its voice recognition, route planning capabilities and traffic light recognition.
It also has six legs, which the researchers say help it walk smoothly and with maximum stability.
Married couple Li Fei and Zhu Sibin are among the visually impaired people helping the university team test the robot using Chinese-language commands.
Li is completely visually challenged and Zhu sees only a little, normally using a cane to assist him in getting around.
Robot guide dogs are under development in other countries, including Australia and Britain.
But China has a drastic shortage of traditional guide dogs.
Pet ownership and service animals are also new concepts in the country. Which means many workplaces, restaurants and other public areas wouldn't welcome a more traditional helper like a Labrador.
Maybe, that’s where technology can help.

Training a guide dog for the visually impaired takes a long time and money. If China can perfect a robot guide dog, it will be a boon for the VI community. The waiting time could be cut dramatically. Robot dogs could also communicate verbally with the humans and provide information about the environment, or take orders do specific things, such as take me to the nearest public loo or to the park, etc.

It not only takes a long time - the statistics are insane: * Most dogs are not suitable. TH e number of actual guide dogs you can generate is very low. TONS of effort, tons of them dropping out. * Dogs must be taken care of - that is not easy for a blind person. * The service life of a guide dog is just a couple of years. They are not young puppies when they finish training and after IIRC 7 years or so retire. * New dog means adjusting for both, dog and owner. All in all - robots have a TON of advantages here. Available, never retire (an upgrade can be done in a way that keeps preferences of the owner intact), cheaper and something you can produce in high numbers. I read about that in the USA some months ago and thought it is a joke - but the article had the numbers, and it is insanely bad for blind people. Robot dogs make a TON of sense.

@@jivvyjack7723 Not sure that is an issue. If you can afford a dog - and those dogs in the USA cost 50.000 USD upward, training is extremely expensive - that is likely covered by insurance AS IS THE UPKEEP. And yes, the cost of those dogs is insane - but that is because they require a LOT of training, which a robot... does... only once.

Blind people need to guide the blind to maintain their body balance. Vestibular perception, proprioception and visual hearing together maintain their body balance. Without vision, you need more sense of touch. Instructions can't make you walk straight when you lose visual cues. Blind people who leave the blind road (tactile cues) are prone to fall or fall into traffic, and voice instructions are lagging behind!
