    This is a known issue called "expectation bias" where you keep reading back what you're expecting to hear and not paying attention to what you're actually hearing. This could have ended with a catastrophe, the other pilot on ground alerting the 787 crew saved so many lives. The ATC also committed 2 catastrophic mistakes, the first one was using the wrong phraseology for a “go around” instruction (she’s not supposed to mention runway designator) which made the transmission sound more like a landing clearance, and the second one was her not paying enough attention to their readbacks.

    also, why don't just say "China Eastern, go around!" without including the runway? They are probably used to hearing "cleared to land, runway 14" that they canceled out everything that was said before "...runway 14".

    Chinese pilots are notorious for not speaking proper English, they basically just know the common words used for ATC communications. In this situation with their limited English they didn't know what was going on at first

    100%. 99% it doesn't happen to you assume it. The ATC should have recognised the misunderstanding a bit quicker and changed language. Something like "clear to land" "negative! go around". The change of language would prick the ears of the pilot to hear the go around command. But English not first language. It's something I often see/hear where people keep saying the same thing expecting the person to understand differently. Effective communicators adapt the language quickly.

    @@ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh123 Although that may be true, the accent of this pilot was clearly not a typical Chinese accent. It could have been a foreign pilot or a Chinese person with English skills better than most. I'd say the language barrier here was mostly caused by the control tower as her English was definitely harder to understand than the pilot of the 787.

    The issue is with ATC phraseology. GO-Around is a red alert phrase. Firm and precise. Just call sign and GO AROUND. There is absolutely no need to state runway, which kept confusing the pilot. You do not "Go-Around" on a certain RWY, you just go around. You cannot having landing clearance sounding the same as a GA command.

    @@AS-id7jo Well, it is true that there is a thing such as ICAO Standard Phraseology which if followed is very clean and straightforward. But also there are other ones, such as FAA Phraseology which deviates a bit. I think the main reason is because Yankees think they all understand American English. And then you have some derivative or whatever used in China. It sounds quite like Aviation English, so it must be good enough... :-)

Any pilot that hears his call sign with go around will execute the missed approach procedure that he reviewed prior to landing . He will press TOGA and fly the missed approach procedure. But go around runaway 14 first time i hear this.

    Definitely a language barrier and should not have happened, however, she should have repeated what she said in a loud and firm tone. She repeated it too casually with the runway number which was probably confusing the pilot. Both parties are at fault here.

    That´s why ATC should say "Go around, I repeat Go Around".... "Go Arund runway 14" is totally useless, because they know that they´re approaching runway14. And if you´re a pilot and you understand maybe not everything what ATC said, but you hear runway 14, then you´ll think you got the landing clearance. So, in my opion it´s clearly the fault of the ATC-Lady.

    The message would have been clearer if ATC had used standard phraseology: China Eastern 2035 go around, repeat go around. You do not say the runway number, this causes confusion. Also many ATCOs don't say "cleared to land", they say "cleatolaaa" especially in the US, which doesn't sound different from "goarounnn" with bad comms

The controller said "China Eastern 2035 discontinue approach Report going around Rwy 14" It confused Pilot on Radio frequnecy as "China Eastern 2035 continue approach (skipping Dis due to accent). It confused pilots to understand the situation. Thanks to US Bangla flight crew helping to prevent impaire condition and helping Crew of CE2035 to initiate go around at finals. @Griffin Similar incident happened in Europe where the ATC said "windXXX/XX , go around rwXX and the pilot interpreted it as a landing clearance after being told the same thing several times. When enquired why he thought that, he pointed that the atc said the wind and landing runway with her instruction that made it confusing so he interpreted it that way. Now, pilots at that stage of the flight would be expecting a landing clearance. But if they are told to go around, that's something they weren't expecting at all and something which they perform rarely. So, from both incidents we learn this tendency among the pilots. Now it is the job of the ATC to make their instruction as clear as possible. In this case, the pilot didn't understand at first. So she should have said it again clearly, but instead she made the instruction more complicated and confusing, another pilot had to step in and say it clearly "she said go around sir" After that you can hear the CES pilot's voice that he understands it and is slightly startled. Basically what I am saying is to make the instruction as clear as possible without complicating it with unimportant information.

    What Anondo said at the last makes very sense. Usually in the ATC terms, the phraseology "GO-AROUND" should be said in a commanding tone, rather than saying "Discontinue APPROACH" which is a totally NON-STANDARD radiotelephony language for a GO-AROUND. If you see there are numerous number of YT videos of GOING AROUND with ATC Calls and most of the time you will hear ATC saying GO-AROUND in commanding tone. Why commanding tone? So that pilot can take actions immediately after hearing that and also make other pilots be cautious of what is happening on the approach airway. Saying GO-AROUND in a warm tone might lead in a missing of information. Every seconds is precious.

  • @ymnoor21
    @ymnoor212 жыл бұрын

    Hmm. First of all it’s definitely not a dramatic go around, pilots had ample time to perform a go around. Secondly the ATC lady used a non standard go around call. You don’t say RWY at the end of standard go around call. I think that got the pilots confused because landing clearance includes RWY number and 98% of the time you are expected to land unless there’s weather involved. Also, she didn’t emphasize or repeat the go around instruction which is another reason for miscommunication. But I am glad that at the end everything played out well for everyone.

    Can’t agree. You don’t make assumption on clearance when you don’t actually hear the words. Regardless whether they are standard or not. It is the pilots’ responsibility to get clarification when in doubt, instead of assuming what you didn’t hear is what you want to hear.

  • @ymnoor21

    @ymnoor21

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@pshkong Fair enough. What you are describing is what should happen every single time. But that’s not what happens 100% of the time. There’s always a possibility of “expectation bias”. You are seeing or hearing what you want to see or hear rather than what actually might be happening. In this case, controller lady added RWY instructions to the go around call. Unfortunately, that’s 100% of the time part of a landing clearance. The pilots were all but setup for landing since there were no pre-caution by the ATC of an aircraft landing before them, nor were told to expect late landing clearance. Although I am not 100% sure, but they might have passed the MDA as well, hence they were committed to land. The stage was setup for “expectation bias”, i.e pilot’s minds were set for landing. The ATC lady also didn’t emphasis her intention enough for go around instruction. Btw, I am not saying pilots were not at fault. They should have had more situational awareness. Here’s a great article of aviation related “expectation bias” examples. skybrary.aero/articles/flight-crew-expectation-bias One classic example was the Korean Air incident in San Francisco a few years back. The pilots relied on ILS system (as a backup) even though ATC cleared them for visual approach. Now this is very common in the U.S to get a visual clearance on a good day even though ILS is available on request. So the pilots thought they could use the LOC and GS as a backup for visual clearance without realizing that the ATC intentionally had instructed them to use visual approach because ILS was malfunctioning that day. A lot of pilots actually do that in reality. They will back up a visual approach with a precision approach. Sadly, it wasn’t a good decision on their part. As a result they were well below GS when they hit the edge of the RWY.

  • @abingdonboy

    Yes the ATC’s RT phraseology was poor but there’s no excuse from the pilots, the first time they misunderstood fair enough but to repeat a landing clearance the second time makes no sense. There’s no reason to be given landing clearance straight after you’ve read back a landing clearance, they were completely clueless. Chinese pilots have atrocious RT and shouldn’t be allowed to do international flights without having passed mandatory independent testing. This is absurd

    As a pilot ,it is also your duty to judge the situation in front of you too, "not just dump everything to ATC" . Pilot has fully right to make a go-around when ever deem that it is unsafe to land or anything that might obstruct landing aircraft or even in case of aircraft is not stabilized. ONE MORE THING DON'T SAY THAT pilot don't see the other aircraft over runway because If not, it means your TCAS is Off. No matter how ATC speak ,if i am correct ALL OF CHINESE PILOT who fly the major airline got LV 6 in ICAO English test. It is quite normal in Dhaka for ATC to speak like that. She didn't emphasize the word "GO AROUND" loudly. You will be surprised if you fly over china airspace and know nothing because all pilot speak Chinese over the radio including ATC. Moreover, the regulation in the Chinese Radiotelephony is NOTHING, they use their very own word which make foreigner pilot confused. Sometime they order the pilot to do some procedure that didn't exist in the Route manual, if you use to fly to china you will know it-in case of you are not Chinese. The other pilot US Bangla is the real hero in this tape ,Thank you. He is the professional pilot who understand all in this situation.= ATC is too afraid to say it loud / Chinese pilot is very good in understanding the command ( in their head not from ATC ).

    I heard that typical stereotype that said chinese couldn’t drive, but seems like it’s true for their pilot counterparts, they don’t really know how to fly at all.

    EVERY SECOND COUNT!!! Very bad coms. from both ATC and CEA pilot. ATC needs to clarify that Runway is busy Go Around....She constantly mentioning the Runway 14 which confuses the Pilot to LAND. And Pilot needs to confirm the ATC call as well. Dear Lord!!! That was close call.

    Nonstandard instructions and the accents speaking from local AT controller, I heard. That’s an extraordinarily dark ways for pilot of non-native English speakers .

  • @tcruise77

    Tunnel vision. Pilots too focus on landing. I reckon ATC should make instruction clearer by repeating it. English with certain ascent would have made it harder to understand. Just like I had difficulty understanding Aussie spoken English and American spoken English, but ok with UK English last time.

    Shocking that they are allowed anywhere near an aircraft. No excuse for that bad airmanship. ATC might not use proper phrasealogy but you need to maintain situational awareness. These guys didn't even understand good morning from good evening.

    I didn’t see any issue with their airmanship. The communication part is/was the problem. I’ve seen Chinese airlines take takeoff clearances out of thin air, once resulting in a tower controller screaming “NO! STOP!!” because she was so panicked he was about to go ripping across 3 active runways.

    ATC should have said - China Easter XXX GO AROUND. Period!!! No runway 14 bla bla bla. The correct protocol is Airline/Flt Nbr and GO AROUND. GO around sounds like CLEAR TO LAND when speaking fast, especially in a critical and stressful part of the flight and with folks that are non native English speakers, but trying to communicate in English.

    I love seeing some people getting triggered and all defensive when someone remotely criticizes their nation. (See some comments below) It does remind me how stupid nationalism can be. Oh, you offended/criticized someone I've never met who happens to live in the vague part of this planet as I do... ¡hOW daRE YoU! Actually the air traffic controller did indeed use non standard communications but the China Eastern pilots did seem to have a misunderstanding. The fact another plane had to intervene was both super awesome and a little worrying. End of the day, we all make mistakes and nobody got hurt Looking forward to getting on a plane soon. Been too long. Kind regards to all.

    Could the pilots of the China Eastern not see the a/c on the rwy ?? I mean the pilot still has to look out of the window to land!!! And just because you have been issued a landing clearance it is still the responsibility of the pilot to ensure the rwy is clear of any FOD or other traffic.....an ambulance for a rwy inspection!!!
