China batteries vs. Canon original: The good, the bad and the ugly

Ғылым және технология

We perform a few tests to see which China battery is best, and if the Canon original part lives up to its spec and price.
NOTE: The quality of cheap knockoff batteries varies. Even if you purchase the test winner of this video, there's NO TELLING whether or not it'll actually be good. I would not stick ANY of these batteries in my expensive camera without doing these tests first, on each individual battery.

    ERRATA: I calculated the ESR wrong, the actual numbers should be DOUBLED to be correct. To calculate the ESR of a battery, I connect it to an 8-ohm load, let it stabilise, and then switch to a 4-ohm load and measure the difference in cell voltage under the higher load. If you enter the ΔV and ΔI into Ohm's law, you can solve for battery ESR. For instance, 0,37 ΔV / 0,807 ΔA = 0,458 Ohm. I accidentally calculated the ESR using the full current, not the current differential, which in this case (since the ESR of the batteries is relatively low) results in a calculated ESR that is roughly half of what it actually is. My comment about what is an appropriate ESR should also be doubled, as I was just going by the measured values.

    I bought my Original LP-E17 for 52% of thr RRP (about $30) for my 760D. But that is still about 300% of some Made in China batteries but the later cannot be charged with the Orginal Canon Charger. I did buy 2 3rd party batteries for my 550D. which could be charged but when charged by Canon's charger will drain very quickly. I think many Made in China batteries just had falsely labelled capacity (mAHs) or some were just recycled from used batteries and relabelled. (Same experience with mobile phone batteries).

    Thanks for posting....I just ordered 2 Cheapy batteries for a cheapy grip to fit my T6i....the battery warnings and the fact that no charge % shows on the screen...first scared me and then irritated me. Lol I’ll probably order Canon batteries for that ridiculous price...and use the cheapy ones as a back up.

    Great Video! Liked and subscribed! Can you please give me an advice? I want to power my bmpcc6k camera via the LP-E6 battery while using a gimbal. I Found these "BONACELL 3200mAh" batteries on ebay. The Problem is, that i don't know much about Battery technology and I'm not sure whether I should buy those or not. Can you tell whether those are good or not? Is there a softcap for battery capacity? Like 2600mAh is the highest, most likely to work properly battery, everything above is unrealistic to work reliably for a longer period of time? Appreciate your time!

  • @FFcossag

    @FFcossag

    6 жыл бұрын

    I load the battery down until it stabilises, then I switch in a known resistive load and measure how much the voltage instantly drops. That voltage drop will be the drop across the battery's ESR, so you can derive the ESR through Ohm's law.

  • @stevec5000

    @stevec5000

    6 жыл бұрын

    How much do you load it down initially and if you have an 8 volt battery and put a 10 ohm load across it and it drops to 7 volts how can you figure the ESR? I think there is a step missing here, don't we need to know the current?

  • @FFcossag

    @FFcossag

    6 жыл бұрын

    I use my switchable 4/8 ohm load. Since both the voltage of the battery and the resistance of the load are known, we know the current (or we can just measure it). Since we also know that the voltage is X under an 8 ohm load and drops to Y under a 4 ohm load, the difference in battery voltage becomes the voltage drop across the ESR. Think of it as a system with a voltage source, a series resistor (ESR) and a load resistor.

    the bateries only last that short because the camera rekognisesthem as fake and tries to burn their power quicker. In the original ones there is a small chip telling the camera to save power. So the fake ones are exactly as good as the original ones, only the Kamera us kinda racistic against them.
