Bitter no! Beatiful yes! I'm part British and I grew up listening to classics like Mary Poppins and almost all musicals from back then. So I love this song because it gives me for love for my part British heritage and I love both the popular accent and the English Cockeny as well. The latter reminds me that not having a lot of money is ok just as long as your happy.

Something about this, even at a young age, kind of scared me. It's mostly in the music, as now reading the lyrics they're really optimistic. It's definitely an enjoyable kind of scary seeing as I'm here. There's something other-worldly about it, especially in the spoken word parts; The fact that I still don't know what everything is referring to makes it all the more intriguing.

sweepers are the guys you clean the chimmys and if i remember right they were consider dirty and poor cuz all the sult in the fire place so in reality he was happy but was hated by the rich or medium clssd

I think the same thing! His voice when he’s talking about “hardly no day and hardly no night” is odd, because it’s a very optimistic, happy song, but it switches to a minor key for only a second which doesn’t fit the song at all, so it does come off as creepy. But I don’t know why the composers made the choice to do that.

He wasn't a sweep though, he was a jack of all trades, he had probably only decided to do that for a few days or a week. It is shown in the movie as he goes through several jobs such as a one man band, a street artist, etc. he even says he does what he feels like doing when he wants.

also the lucky part was due to the inspiration for the character.. apparently a while ago shaking hands with a sweep was actually considered to give you luck

What we did at my old secondary school with plays is cast older students as adult parts - child parts would be played by 11/12-year-olds.

I love this song. I actually auditioned for Mary poppins and got callbacks. Wish me luck!

When I was 5, I always watch VHS Disney films and I found this song on a trailer of Mary Poppins. 2:24 starts an then ends I always sang along and get stuck in my head. Man.....Good 'ol days...

Started as a chimney sweep pretty recenetly. I've never listened to this song as much as I do now. A Norwegian sweep apprentice. Apprenticeship will last for 2 years and 4 months, so lots to learn left :D

@@linsqopiring6816 vocational school in Norway generally lasts 4 years. 2 in school and 2 in apprenticeship, with some that only require 1 year school and 3 years as an apprentice. I'm in the last category but it has been shortened somewhat since I've had 3 years of general studies. But in Norway sweeps are a also a supervisory body. So we also go on general fire security supervisions too.

Mary poppins was my childhood

I heard some think he was a ghost and it makes it creepier since most chimney sweepers were little boys who never lived long due to the soot. Theres a poem about chimney sweepers. Also most of the little boys who became sweepers were poor so their parents sent them to work as sweepers stheysold them you know child labor

I learnt all Mary Poppins songs off by heart cause it was our year 6 play. Now Mary Poppins haunts me

Just saw the Marry poppins musical. It was an amazing production. This song was the one I most enjoyed and the one I knew I had to listen to again. It has now been an hour since I've had this on repeat.

Am I the only one who always thought there was something eerie about Mary Poppins? Like, just something bittersweet about it. The things in it weren’t entirely filtered to be child friendly (distant parent, people seeing chimney sweeps as poor, etc) but it was presented towards children (the animated bits, happy songs, guys floating from laughter). It was a good eerie tho, and now with the added nostalgia, the songs feel even more intriguing. Just me?
