Maliyah McGowan...you are so right!!! And I TOTALLY agree with you. Love would have made ALL the difference in their lives, and when we're loved as children, from the VERY beginning, our lives reflect it. We're only a reflection of what we see, hear, and are taught.

Maliyah, i just left a reply. Yes i agree with you. The only thing wrong and sick with this story, is no one took the REAL TIME with them. Society turned them into test patterns. If she like BoB Marley, oh yeah, she was very normal, both of them. hugs and love is what the parents and doctors miss for them. Hospitals, anybody will crack up from all the medications they gave these poor black twins.

Racism traumatised them. They were scolded for their speech and then decided to not speak to others altogether,it's pretty messed up.No wonder they lost it!Imagine only having ONE person to speak to in a world full of people.I get where the intense feelings came from.creepy non the less.No early intervention meant it only got worst.

When people talk about the Gibbon twins, they do not seem to mention the impact of the racism they experienced. I believe, that they were forced into isolation because of the bullying from the racist community. Their withdrawal was a protective mechanism for a very racist community. It must have been hard to see their own reflection in each other face knowing their community rejected that very reflection. They got a raw deal and seemed to have had some shitty mental health workers. Trauma changes the chemistry in children's brains and the racism they experienced was trauma.

  • @kwacou4279

Not only racism, they were also different. I'm an Black immigrant (Jamaica) to America and myself as well as my sister were taunted, attacked by other Black children , not for being Black but for being different. It was so bad, our parents placed us into a different school to get us away from the abuse. Kids can be cruel to each other just for being different.

Jo Wo ABSOLUTELY!!! It is quite clear that that RACISM was the root of the problem starting at school, with the psychiatrist who mis-labelled them as Schizophrenic! and the refusal to recognise them as worthy of release. I experienced racism in my employment and that greatly affected my mental health up to now. I didn't want to mix wth people and cut off due to my depressive state.

Pommie bears Depending on the individuals one has the misfortune to come across, it can be VERY RACIST in London, as with all places where white people co-exist with Black people. The thing in London is that most white people think they are slick, but they are not! Not many, except the most racist, will directly call you a Black Bast@rd anymore. They know they will automatically suffer a sanction for being so blatantly racist. Instead they will be insidiously passive aggressive and just treat you less favourably by the hidden tactic of DENIAL ie deny them whatever they ask for eg opportunities and then they will come up with every excuse as to why what they did was to do with everything other than racism. Your comment is a typical white RACIST person's comment. Full of arrogance, ignorance and unwarranted superiority. Why? You think as a white person you can dictate and DENY a Black person's experience because you said so and you know better, right? As a white person you are NOT living a Black person's life, with their experiences so how can you speak on behalf of all Black people?! The whole content of your comment reeked of RACISM.

So chilling. What they had was a deadly bond. I did my own reading about them after this vid and found that the treatment they got did not help either. Locking them up with hardcore criminals did nothing good for them. I wonder if there was anyone at all that could have helped them. Guess this had to happen but June did not go on to live a normal life. Never married or had children or became an author like she wanted to. She just lives alone and only go out to visit family. It was the bullying and harsh treatment that caused all this. We need to be mindful how we treat each other.

That is utterly disturbing and heartbreaking. Those girls must've suffered immense pain and confusion in order to reach such a decision. Amazingly, they come to an agreement to sacrifice one for the sake of the other - is that some kind of misunderstood love? My mind just exploded. I felt for them. And, saddest of all, none of this needed to happen had the authoritative figures in their lives been forward thinking enough to protect them from peoples ignorance and prejudice. Trauma can do horrendous things to an otherwise "normal" person. To anyone at all. So sad.

I grew up when this is real news- firstly they got sent down for Arson. Next they tried to kill each other before going away because they were both insanely jealous of each other with an American boy. June on her release said she wanted to see her sister- her death was just coincidental. They did not hate each other. Also it has already been made into a film, book and a hit by Manic Street Preachers in the Uk, do we really need another over the top hollywood dramatisation set somewhere other than Wales?

Sounds like they were highly intelligent girls that could've led a very productive, normal lives if they had been guided properly instead of being mistreated and isolated. Their total dependence on one another was necessary for survival - not the nurturing type of bond that normally exist between twins. They had no life outside of each other and it led to a dark, parasitic bond.

I can identify with Jennifer. When I went through a traumatic, near-death experience I was convinced that my survival was a mistake and tried to end my own life. With the advancements in mental health today, I have been able to recover from that. Maybe the twins felt like they were one person that was accidentally split into two. They convinced themselves that they would never be able to live a normal life with this condition and a sacrifice had to be made. Mental health back then was not the same as it is today. It wasn't the parents' fault, doctors fault, or the institution's fault. That was the best and only way people knew how to deal with mental illness. Something that can be worked through today would have been a prison sentence years ago. Mental wards were not effective.

I read this story in detail. These girls were tormented beyond belief. They lived their childhood being treated as freaks, because of the way that they looked (they were the only Blacks) and the way that they talked (with Bajan dialects). They were traumatized! An absolute tragedy that they could not have been raised in Barbados, how different their lives would have been. As Mutuburaka says, in his song: “It not good...to live ‘a white man country, too long”!

The Silent Twins are hands down THE most facinating and most morbid twin phenomenon ever. When you follow their story (their trauma, the racist bullying they endured and lack support) their logic of thinking almost makes sense, in a very disturbing way.l, and thats what makes this story so tragic, there was no one around to challenge their way of thinking so, they stuck with it until one made a pact to die. Whoever diagnosed them as psychopaths was gravely mistaken, it was something more concerning. Its clear they had so much to say, so much to reveal to the world, yet never had the support. I do wish I could purchase the stories they wrote.

And, this would not just be one thought. are in our mid 50's now and still good friends, but we have lost that connection. I spent 21 yrs abroad in the USA. We are so different now. Me and my twin sister are opposite too but sometimes we plan on things to hurt people. One time when we were kids, we hid a pile of shit in a girl's (whom we hate) bag and peed on it. also 6th grade we were completely silent around people that in school we lost grades. but we changed since as we realized it's no way to live.

If they were not black they would have been tutored, nurtured and called geniuses We allow color to be used as justification for cruelty, menacing. and criminal bullying. Each person who participated in bullying, standing back. as a bystander is responsible for what they turned into. Humanity is a group identity. you can't just rattle off all their crimes and not consider nor accurately detail the horrific crimes against them. No one was ever arrested, the actual things done to them was ever attached to names to shame nor punish the culprits. There is a biography story out there much more detail oriented and indepth. I think it's a BBC production. I think she died of a broken heart and there is nothing funny about this story. I think the level of flippant discourse leaving out much of the horrific treatment they recieved from so called good God fearing neighbors, teachers, doctors almost mocking them while telling this sad tragic story is inppropriate. Get and show some real compassion empathy instead of telling it like an episode of Jerry Springer. Your life might fall apart one day tragically and I'm sure you would not want people telling the story of your demise cracking jokes. They were victimized, traumatized, overmedicated, diagnosed and mistreated by their community and rhe medical community and these women deserve more respect than is given here. We get the mercy we give and folks with tortured lives don't need it retold inaccurately by a jokester. if you want to be a comedian get a job with Comedy Central don't hack through someone's life story.

I have a sister I don't necessarily consider half because we were raised together, and DIDN'T know we didn't have the same father. Usually a sibling by your father probably didn't grow up with you in the same household. if anything THAT'S the half sibling.

I have an identical twin. Growing up we always had an incredible and magical bond. We could talk in our own language to each other. And we could look at each other and just know what we were feeling or thinking. We don’t see each other as often now. But we still have a great bond and rely on each other. We are now 30.

Hello all, My take on the grave stone poem written by June is: "We once were two" (obvious) "We two made one" (being so close they were like one person) "We no more two" (now one of us is dead) "Through life be one" (from now on only one of us exists) "Rest in peace" Has someone said this already or am I way off? :)

I am a twin & we do not get along at all. We were best friends (or so i thought) as kids but as adults I realized there was constant competition & envy in her eyes that turned to hate as an adult. She even blocked me out of her life & would (and still) tell people stories that were mine, as if it was her.. her lies have become a reality to her... it gets deeper & even more wierd...
