Why a childhood dream you might ask? Well, I wanted to become a biker ever since I was a small kid. Whenever we were out travelling with our family van my head was glued to its windows. Because I was fascinated by all those bikers passing us. Back then already it was clear to me that I need to become a biker myself one day. So all of that happened during the 90's. And some of the bikes I saw back then somehow managed to become stuck inside my head. The old Honda XRV 750 Africa Twin being one of them.
So how did it feel to ride it? Totally awesome of course. I don't expect anything else from a trusty Honda which was built in the 90's by the way ;) I just love how those big dual sports feel between my legs. Apparently it doesn't matter if it's one from 1996 or a proper high tech weapon like the GS Adventure I recently rode.
Although compared to its modern relatives the old Africa Twin makes it's raison d'être a lot more obvious: it was made for long distances, for seeking those paths less travelled. For going off the road. While the modern travel enduros make quick road riding easy for me it was the opposite on the old AT. I couldn't really sense anything while riding. It's way too spongy to get any decent feedback for someone with my (not so big) level of experience. I didn't dare taking it lower or faster than the video shows. Otherwise I would have lost my 'I got everything under control' impression. But for this kind of riding like shown even the old Africa Twin works well enough. Just demands slightly more cojones.

As an owner of a similar Africa Twin for +10 years, and having ridden many other bikes, I still feel the old girls gives me the widest smile when I go on twisty roads and lean it around. As you say, there is something about doing that with a bike that wasn’t built for it but still does it so well. Keep up the great work.

Ladys and gentlemen, this right here is the argument for starting on a smaller bike. Everybody saying "you grow out of a 300cc/500cc so quickly and will have to buy a new one" is true on one hand, but if you stick to your small bike and master it, you will become a brilliant rider like this dude right here rocking an 20 years old African Twin through the corners "fast-ish" :D This will most likely take you a lot longer on a bigger starter bike. Schaaf you are one of the most skillful riders I know and I really love your content. On Insta and KZread likewise. (Y)

Aside Whoever thinks he really "grew out of" something around 500 or more is justing looking for an excuse to buy a new bike.
@Schaaf
7 жыл бұрын
+Aside thank you very much!!! Of course I absolutely agree. It doesn't take long until a 500cc bike feels too weak. But sticking to it and trying to "master" the thing surely pays off in the end. +supermotardmario You are also right. It's such a shame that many people out there always immediately feel offended when someone has a different opinion about anything. I'm just saying that people should stay on smaller bikes for learning. But some folks immediately will accuse me of saying that it's wrong to ride bigger bikes on the road in general when hearing me recommending smaller ones to beginners..... That's why I always keep on preaching that everybody should ride whatever the fuck he or she wants. As long as they enjoy it. And if someone's interested in becoming confident and quick I'll tell them it might be a good idea to start small and be patient for a while. But like you were saying no one should feel the need to justify themselves when buying a new bike.

So riding a road 5 times a year is your definition of "everyday"? :D But yes of course I know it very well and I think that's also necessary when wanting to go a bit quicker
Awesome!!! 😍 The classic Africa Twin was also one of my many childhood dream bikes, so it's great to see you riding it, and enjoying it that much... Obviously the bikers of the 90s had at least as much fun as we have, proving that power and electronics don't really matter as long as there are 2 wheels and an engine 😉

One question: were you alone on the africa twin or were 2 persons during the test? i think you were alone but you're so excellent driver..........do you know the secondary transmission ratio? i nave a 16 - 46 but i knew that for some parts of europe africa has 16 - 45 or 16 - 43 too.

I have a very big grin on my face and i must look like i have just lost my marbles!! That was awesome, that bit of rear wheel skip at 3:34 (and a few others) was impressive. I have to say you really do go for it every time. I'm impressed that you had the balls to ride a (shall we say) oldish bike like that with such force considering it wasn't familiar to you. Bravo schaaf that was worthy of being a birthday present even though it was obviously not just for me i enjoyed it enormously. As Always Ride And Speed Safe.

You should try one with a Hyperpro upgrade.. Mine has just that, including Galfer wave's, especially the suspension is the best upgrade you can do on an AT. Doing Fly overs on the freeway flat out (on semi-road tires) and seeing the Beemer posers getting smaller in your mirrors never gets old.

Awesome. How do you eleminate windsound?
I was looking to your 390 ADV video and this one - hesitating between both and cannot take any decision. For road use how would you compare it ? Is the 390 delivering enough power ? Or is the engine of the AT preferable?
Nice ride ;) love the Queen in all the way! I have an rd04 myself so i can feel what you felt on it :) Something off the topic: your friend have the same problem as me, and that is when you pull in the cluch you get the Neutral light go on in every gear. So @Schaaf, since I can't own a 1996 Honda XRV 750 Africa Twin where I live (it was also my dream bike when I was a little kid but they never sold it here), do you think that the T7 is a good alternative? I don't want something too expensive or heavy like the GS because I have a lot of learning to do. Do you think that the T7, even if it doesn't look like the Africa Twin, will make me smile just like the old beast could?

Hey Schaaf! Suspensions were the stock one or already updated with wilbers springs etc.? In your video the sound is quiet nice. But: How much do your hear as the rider?
