Infantry continue to enjoy force protection provided by mostly 60 year old tracked M113 APCs. Not really a modern equipped force where our peers are equipped with modern IFV. Not sure this represents 'duty of care' by the Government and Army in protection of combat troops.

In my opinion we need to stop changing our budget between several important changes and just expand our budget so that we can get them all done. We are probably going to war soon and the politicians need to stop worrying about how increasing defence budget will affect their chances of getting elected again and more about how it's going to help our country in the long run.

The issue will be recruitment and retention. Hi tech is wonderful BUT operating hi tech requires qualified clever people. Generating this will mean changes to physical specifications of recruits so they can recruit tech nerds AND the current ADF tech quals framework will need to change so they are actually qualified to operate repair stuff. Pulling a box and sending it to DMO who send it elsewhere for repair won’t work. ADF tech training schools will need to actually be able to generate hi quality training. The dumbing down of the tech workforce across ADO has been horrendous. All this new kit will require whip smart techs. Let’s not even think about nuke subs, drones, missiles etc.

It is true Army must be Adaptable, making Brigades specialised is failed cost cutting 90s doctrine, and it means when a brigade is made combat ineffective through attrition we completely lose that capability. South Korea must hate us, same guy ditched SPGs last time in 2012 and now he has blitzed them again! Many countries are ordering red backs and there SPG our own defence industry could have got some export business out of that. SPGs have been pivotal in Ukraine, HIMARs get all the talk but guides missiles for them cost a fortune and the SPGs have fired hundreds of thousands of comparatively cheap rounds to good effect. It is also lighter then Abrams so we are capable of projecting it. A battalion worth of vehicles is not enough what about combat engineers supporting them at a breach (land 8160 will probably get canned as well) what about all the other units headquarters elements who were mounted in carriers. The 450 number was not plucked out of thin air it was determined through testing and evaluation. It also means half of the “heavy brigades” infantry can’t even do there job and move up with the tanks. Why get rid of IFVs and keep the tanks at that! we could have mounted 120mm on the red back and have a versatile light tank which would be much more use to a Amphib force then an M1a2 Abrams (for example cv90/120) and how is the Bendigo factory going to stay in business when bushmaster and hawkei contracts dry up? As much as they want this to be an invade Australia scenario, the Australian experience of conflict has been abroad and has been decided on the land domain with air and naval support, the review completely ignores that fact. How are you going to get people to enlist into army if we do not get the right equipment, vehicles, our versatility at brigade level has been reduced by 2/3rds and the government can’t even be bothered to invest in us being able to remain relevant in close combat? This is not a strategic review this is negligence and ignores what soldiers need. LT General Stewart needs to push back on this our army and our industry will suffer because of this ineptitude

It would appear that not a single lesson was learned from the current fighting in Ukraine. The one thing that has become indisputable over the last 12 months is the need to be able to absorb casualties and the ADF couldn't absorb 24 hours of high intensity warfare. There is no effort to adapt to new threats, only promises of more reviews. Where are the long-range missiles, self-propelled artillery systems, modern infantry fighting vehicles, large numbers of generation four & five combat aircraft, fuel reserves, hardend bases? Australia is effectively a protectorate of the United States of America and not worthy of the status of 'nation'. Two years after the announcement, DoD still have not announced the location for the manufacture of missiles; and such announcements are the easy part. And while you might pause this Anzac Day, General, the Brereton Royal Commission continues to persecute frontline soldiers while their rear echelon superiors polish their medals and awards. An utterly disgraceful situation of which every red tab should be ashamed. How any of you could attend Anzac Day services while your former troops are driven to suicide by this witch hunt is beyond me.

It's not possible to scale up quality troops in a short time. We need a much larger reserve to enable scalability in war with lower costs in peacetime. We also need to use forces more for search & rescue, mobile medical clinics, remote construction etc. to justify the cost of a larger core, without diluting warfighting skills too much.

Sir, (Able Seaman ETW McDermott - retired), Firstly, thank you for that. I have been a keen student of Australian military strategy since I left the RAN in 1987. Now, I'm no Saint, I didn't like the 80's Navy as it was very racist and I'm an Abo from Boorooloola, but they wouldn't let me out so I had to find a way to get kicked out. I did. Although I still needed to serve Australia. SES, volunteer Coast Guard, etc, etc. Sir, my question is, what capabilities is our Army developing in anti naval warfare? The truth is, the RAN under with it's current force, is nothing but a political vote buyer. It is hopeless as a deterrent. It's got all of the wrong gear. Our only ability to fight atm, is the RAAF. Perhaps we should spend more money on the Army so that it becomes a much better deterrent. The Navy is a lost cause.

What I was reading is they doing a review on RAN that will be released by the end of this year 2023. What I've learnt so far is the Collins class submarines will have an end of life upgrade till 2036. This will include giving them a VLS to fire tomahawk missiles how they plan to do that is? But it's part of the 368 billion dollar program going towards submarines. In 2032 3 Virginia class block v varent will be purchased from the US. So Australia will be operating both Virginia class and Collins till 2036. Then the Collins will be decommissioned and 2 more Virginia class will be purchased for a total of 5 till 8 new desined British SSNR submarines will be built locally in 2040s. The Anzac class are being replaced with 8400 tonne Hunter class frigates with a 32 cell VLS. Apparently 9 was proposed but I hear RAN wants to downgrade to 6 built. With an additional 3 more of the same ship in super size to be turned into destroyers with matching China 055 class destroyers payload of 110 cell VLS. If giving a green light with the new RAN review. Also RAN not happy with the new Awafra class OPV. Apparently they state is to undergunned and they having trouble landing a medium size helicopter on it. The RAN has proposed larger heavily armed corvettes for OPV. This is also a part of the RAN review. The Awafra class opv they may either scrap them or turn them into mine hunters. So far Australia oporate a variety of platform varent for RAN including 2 LHD 8 Anzac class frigate and 3 air warfare destroyers based on the f100 class. The next faze of ships is basically worked out for 2030s. Australia is currently using ESSM evolve sea sparrow missiles block 2A. SM2 and longer range SM6 missiles. New upgrade varent of Tomahawks have been ordered but not delivered yet. Australia will also have new longer range NSM anti ship missile to replace harpoons. And several hypersonic stand of missiles is being developed. Australia also retiring the 22 tiger attack helicopters in favour for 29 upgraded Apache attack helicopters with hellfire missile. HIMARS mobile artillery systems for army. 129 new IFV for the Army but not 450 as planned. Self propelled howitzers cancelled. Land based Upgraded patriot missile and NASAMS have been ordered as well mobile land based anti ship missile and more anti tank weaponry. Increase of ADF from 60.000 to 80.000. For the airforce more fast jets drones.

The other two sound like they are going to become lighter and more mobile motorised brigades. The hint was must be capable of being deployed by land, sea and air. Notice the focus on our northern bare bases. If the above is true, this is just a larger and more focused structure similar to the ‘80’s. I think it is excellent!

Australia has bushmaster Hawkie and Boxer for that. Add M1A2 Abrams sep 3 tanks for close in artillery support. Along with 129 new IFV tanks. M777 howitzers for medium range artillery support. And the HIMARS for long strike capability support. Australia will also have additional 29 new Apache attack helicopters with hellfire missile. ADF will also receive a lot more anti tank mutants weaponry. If Australia just goes for IFV 450 ADF will have only more troop carriers but no long range strike capability. I believe it was a shortage of 4000 odd people under, and with their current behaviour, they’re not going to hit either goal of increasing numbers to what should be the minimum.

I think the ADF is shrinking for two reasons; 1 - Change in demographics, across the west generally, since the 1970s. If you join, you will find the vast majority are white. But while populations have grown there is approximately 40% less white people than the 1970s. For whatever reason, other ethnicities either aren't interested or are incapable of joining. 2 - A culture were people are taught to be ashamed of their country from a young age. Additionally, the army is really bad at retention. There are good reasons why most leave as soon their 4 year contract is up. There is a lot the army could do to fix that, very easily, without spending any more money. If you do join, I personally would recommend Combat Engineers. From everything I seen and heard, they have a better culture and they do some cool stuff. I've worked with them a bit.

Until we strengthen our energy sufficiency again, along with our manufacturing capability, this is all rubbish talk. Australia learned a hard lesson after WW2; be self sufficient, or face the very real possibility of being defeated. Luckily we had the new, burgeoning America come to our aid back then, along with Japan being overextended already. China is the new burgeoning state these days, with manufacturing clout and mass energy/supplies available from Russia, and our country is as dependent on overseas supply as it was back before WW2, probably more so. As Ukraine has showed, the west cannot even provide enough supplies to really fight an Eastern Euro fracas, let alone the two front war envisaged by idiots in Washington. Australia in that context would be a joke; we would burn through our stocks in less than a week, with no way to resupply most of them in any sort of acceptable time frame. And this talk all ignores the fact that most of our energy supplies, trade, etc all come from either the proposed "adversary" itself, or from inside the actual conflict zone, because most of our refineries and manufacturing have been shut down, and our strategic reserves are mostly held in the US. So within a very short time frame our economy would be utterly ruined, and our energy supplies dry up. Since most of our merchant marine are contracted from other countries, even shipping things from elsewhere would be in tatters. The above needs to be dealt with before any talk about weapons, brigades, etc are even mentioned. Supply is King. Everything else follows.

Because half of us would rather fight for Rusha.....its becoming clear that NATO is run by war mongering USA...if we truely believe in a more peaceful word..mabby we should stand back for a moment and just entertain the idea that mabby we are the bad guys, and allthoue we truely believe that we are doing the right thing, at the end of they day it takes 2 to tango!

The ADF don't want national service. During the Vietnam war conscripts was sent. And the ADF claim more than 70% of them wouldn't follow orders they was undisplend the ADF had too much trouble with them. Many of them would deserted and refused to fight. It lead to too many court marital and too many people with PTSD and suicide. And that was back when more people was patriotic. Today forget it. It be 10x worse. Too many naturalised born Australian from migrants that would sell ADF out and couldn't be relied upon. The ADF only wants a voluntary force. They want people who actually want to be there and follow orders. Not some twitt who refuse to fight and bring trouble

If you want to improve the ADF get rid of that quisling Campbell, and bretherton, the moral of the army must be at an all time low, instigating what happens in Rome stays in Rome, you do not rat on your mates, you might be proud of the men at the front line, but the men have no respect for the top brass.

First Nation people of Australia need's it's own army as a first nation independent army seperate to Australian Defence Force even if we as indigenous people can turn to other countries like China, Canada, India Saudi Arabia or any other mutual countries able to help First nations and fight along side Australia and if necessary we should be able to fight against Australia if deemed that we were pushed from our land and all as an independent army and peoples...
