    R.I.P. Chick Corea. I was lucky to meet you in person a few years ago, to see how kind, humble and encouraging you were towards a kid who dreams to be a drummer. You are my musician hero who inspires me to sit down and learn Jazz, but more than that, you are a beautiful human being. My sincere condolence to your beautiful family. Thanks for everything you did.

    ***** Please please please can you tell me the name of the scale(s) you were using for the melody? I'm a guitarist and that sound is exactly what I need in my playing. Peace.

    Glen Parkinson Sounds Phrygian. Or a Bb major scale over D, starting on D. The characteristic note is the flat2 (Eb). Give it a shot!

  • @stephenbertino8373

    @stephenbertino8373

    MRQProductionsInc It's actually the 5th harmonic-minor mode, so in this case it's a G harmonic minor scale starting on D. It can also be described as a "Phrygian major" because it's a Phrygian with a raised 3rd scale degree. If you're not a guitarist, it's perfectly understandable that you wouldn't know about the harmonic- and ascending-melodic minor scales each having 7 distinct modes of their own. Those 14 other modes can be thought of as alterations of the 7 standard "church modes" like that. I knew nothing about these until I hit my midlife crisis at 40 and picked up the guitar, after playing only the piano all my life. All of these other modes are very well covered in Frank Gambale's great "Chopbuilder Workout" video and booklet for guitar. Frank is, of course, Maestro Corea's Elektric-Band guitarist. Guitarists truly need to master all of those extra modes because the nature of their instrument is such that the major scale only provides a single unique visual pattern (i.e. that scale looks the same, no matter what fret you start on) whereas each of the 12 major scales offers its own unique packet of mental and physical challenges to pianists.

  • @dvamateur

    @dvamateur

    I could never understand the modes. Scales I get, Major, Minor, melodic, harmonic, etc. But modes are beyond me. This scale in this video sounds Arabic to me, since it seems like it has half step in between 1st and 2nd note of the scale.

The Sound the Future makes...but CHICK!: He's been to the Future. He's SEEN IT. And he can talk to you NOW, and describe it in Detail, for you. TODAY! I just Love him! Let's REALLY CELEBRATE CHICK COREA!!! Seriously.
