50 years later, I still can’t believe the courage behind Kath’s vocals… he was all in / make or break, and he didn’t hesitate… probably the best vocal performance in rock, because he was right on the edge, and didn’t back down…

Today is Jan 24, 2024. Yesterday sadly marked 46 years since Terry Kath died. The band was not the same after that. This timeless 1970 classic now brings tears to my eyes. It was their first big hit reaching the top 10. The city of Chicago was very blessed to have this band no matter how much mayor Daly despised them.

I love watching Terry Kath play. He isn't simply playing his guitar or trotting out well worn exercise patterns, he BECOMES the guitar. He IS the guitar. His mind absolutely disappears into the music and the guitar simply becomes an extension of what is going on in his head at the time. His hands just do what he is playing in his head as to how it ought to go or sound right here and he's already a dozen steps ahead of you before it registers in your brain what just happened, what he just pulled off with the ease of a flame thrower toasting a marshmallow. The really elite musicians don't seem to care if they walk on stage wearing whatever they put on that morning to measure up to some critical standard of a "professional." They don't really even seem to care if anyone is watching them, or try to show off this or that move or repetitiously exhaust exercise scales with B-S antics to impress the fans who just jump on musical band wagons as a method of including themselves in whatever is popular today. Terry just puts his head down and becomes the music. When experienced guitar players, hear what TK is doing with his instrument, and while listening, trying to imagine, trying to figure out, or simply attempting to follow what is emanating out of him, we just put our guitars away, sit down, watch intently, and try to soak up as much of the energy he is throwing off to absorb the feeling with him. His aura just seems to blast out of his guitar and cover you with an incredible blanket of supernatural oneness with the music. He deconstructs and reconstructs his guitar in patterns and ways that are alien to mere mortals and shares his pure natural genius without quarter. To those who understand, receive, contemplate, become jealous of, admire, and stand in awe of Terry Kath, he is in a class all by himself. If music is what feelings sound like, Terry Kath IS music.

One of those so lucky to be in the fifth row on the floor after meeting a woman and her family at Hampton Beach, NH and told her I loved Chicago and was going to get tickets for their upcoming concert at the Garden and she said she knew someone at the Garden and could get me tickets right up close to the stage. I didn’t believe her but gave her my phone number. Sure enough she came through. Unbelievable to be that close to the stage. Those two concerts were 1973 and 1974. Then I saw Chicago again at Schaefer Stadium (old Patriots stadium) in Foxboro, MA when they toured with The Beach Boys in 1975 plus Fleetwood Mac and a few other bands. Unbelievable concerts.

The brilliance of Chicago and Terry Kath in particular, was how they blended musical genres using an unparalleled mastery of instruments and composition. Listen closely to their music and it's obvious they were devout students of all aspects of the discipline. Little wonder that no less than Hendrix himself declared a sincere appreciation for what he did with the guitar. A troubled soul perhaps, but an amazing artist no question. Rest in peace Brother Kath.

Comment The rumor about Jimmi Hendrix goes like this (clipped from Rolling Stone Magazine concerning Terry’s tragic death): “One key piece of Kath lore was when Jimi Hendrix once told Parazaider after a Chicago gig at L.A.’s Whisky a Go Go that “your guitar player is better than me.” “They were opening up for Jimi Hendrix when they were still Chicago Transit Authority,” says Sinclair. “They spent a lot of time on the road together and apparently hung out a lot then. Guercio said that when they were at the same festivals, they had a nice relationship together.” Anyway, that’s where the legend comes from, but we’ll never know if it’s true, besides, Hendrix wasn’t an arrogant type to say, “Hey, I, better than Kath!”, so even if he said it, doesn’t mean it’s true. Sometimes artists aren’t aware of their talent and it seems very unprofessional to boast yourself above another, so they usually compliment each other. Music is an art and not an athletic competition, so by what criteria does anyone judge best in an art? As a musician (guitarist) I know that that I magnify every little mistake or miscue I may make any given night, ones no one else ever heard, so we can be super critical of our own abilities, but look at others in a different light. I’ve heard an interview with the super musician of Rush, where they claim they each make as many mistakes every night to be tolerant of each other and not over critical. I have seen those guys more than 25 times live and if they’re making mistakes, they’re the only ones who know about it. Hendrix may well have given such a compliment since so many other greats, from Clapton to Walsh have praised Kath to the heavens. Kath also had a very soulful R&B voice, kind of reminiscent of the late, great Jimmy Dewar. …And that’s a hell of a compliment because Dewar had vocal chords made of velvet. The air just slid across them with little resistance.

@@ConvairDart106 Yeah, I just read Seraphine's account of that night. So sad I never knew that happened, I wasn't around then and only started listening to Chicago in the mid 90s. What a shame, dude was talented beyond belief. I'm trying to find the doc his daughter made about him. Thanks for the info.
