After the passing of Terry, they changed gears and created a whole new genre called "Sappy" Rock.

Especially side one of this great album.

"Poem 58" is probably the song with the most funk on the album. Terry Kath had supernatural talent on guitar and baritone voice. "Liberation" closing out the album also shows how amazing Terry was. During a set at the Whisky-a-Go-Go the trombone player Jimmy Pankow walked out of the dressing room and came face to face with Jimi Hendrix himself. Jimi said to Pankow, "Your horn section is one set of lungs and your guitar player is better than me". Jimi took Chicago Transit Authority on tour with him.

Chicago..Poem 58. 'well worth the listen'

One song an CTA that everyone misses and hasn't been reviewed is "Listen" That is one of the best songs and I love it every time I hear it.

Dude this album is so good. Poem 58 is probably my favorite track, but they're all really good. No weak songs at all

I bought this album when it came out and was blown away by their version of I'm a man. Chicago won a Grammy for best new artist.

Terry Kath was the man and the soul of this band. When he passed they were never the same

1st song,1st side, 1st album. What a way to induce yourself to the world. This is who we are.

The first song on their debut album "Chicago Transit Authority". Introducing their styles of music, with a little focus on each instrument, into the American music scene with horn section being very prominent and not just used in background.

Terry Kath, the greatest rock guitarist of all time, wrote this masterpiece.

A deep cut from this LP is South California Purples with bluesy vocals and super guitar work. Not a "hit" and not known to most, but maybe worth a listen on your own...

Terry Kath played guitar like Hendrix and sang like Ray Charles!

Great song and title - Written by Kath, he asked the assistance of trombonist Jim Pankow to translate Terry's thoughts from his head onto charts so the others could follow as Terry could only manage writing rudimentary chord charts - the complex time changes, key changes & genre changes needed Pankow's expertise to get the rest of the band in the ball park to tighten things up. Once tight these guys new they could tackle any song in any key - in the days before auto tune........

was in a band in '69- this album came out, and we added a horn section...CTA was easily our favorite band, and we tried our best to cover them- 50 years later (march of '19) they came to my home town and my wife and I went, expecting just to hear those awful ballads that made them money in the '80s...curtain rises and Robert Lamm looks at me and smiles a little(2nd row) - then they hammer those first 2 chords of Introduction and I realized that he knew what the old schoolers wanted...yep, wept a little..

Poem 58 and South California Purples Deep cuts pure eargasm

Pretty much every album through 77’ will do you right. “In the country” from Chicago II is one of my favorites, but anything from that era is pretty great.

This is the Chicago I fell in love with. After the first 9 or 10 albums, it was over. But these guys were the best of rock, funk, soul you'll ever find.

Grew up listening to these wonderful early Chicago/Chicago Transit Authority albums... some of the very first music I remember, as my oldest brother was a huge fan, and bought each album as it was released. What a great way to learn about music... I was 3 years old when this album was released.

My fav record of all time. Grew up listening to it (“only” in my mid 30s) and it holds up. I don’t say that lightly being the massive Tool fan that I am. 😁 Took my dad to see them a couple years ago VIP and the horn section still sounds spot on. Incredible.

This is a hell of a first album, fantastic music on it blending a lot of styles.

Hit the nail on the head. Chicago was such a great fusion of jazz, rock and soul. Until Terry Kath died. It wasn’t a bad band after that but it became more and more of a pop band. Which is sad.

Now ya talking. This is great music.

Excellent! 0ne of my favorite records in my own vinyl collection...a perfect record to play straight through with zero songs that you want to skip.

phenomenal band before Kath died and Cetera took them down the road to sappy 80s ballads. First 3 albums are the best. My opinion of course. :)

If you watch any of their early live stuff, it was as if Terry Kath had instant access to "the zone".

Terry Kath wrote this in his head. James pankow (trombone) had to transcribe it.

What a wonderful journey this rabbit hole will be and I'll be along for the ride as I grew up on their music. "I'm A Man" is the obvious next choice from the same album and then "It Better End Soon", all 4 movements, from Chicago II which is apropos for current events still today and probably forever. When you finish this rabbit hole, you might consider Blood, Sweat & Tears next who also have a awesome horn section and a ton of hits.

After BS&T, try Little Feat in the Lowell George days. All the tracks with the Tower of Power horns.

As good as they were Chicago never quite bettered Chicago Transit Authority. This album, in my opinion, is by far their best. I remember hearing this as a teenager on it's release in '69 and being amazed by it. Good work going to the very start D

hobo chang ba Chicago 2 was real good too!

A bit of soul, funk, r&b and jazz blues mixed up together. These are real talented musicians. So tight.

Horn section is so underrated.

Jimmy Hendrix said Terry Kath was the best lead guitar player in rock/blues!

Terry Kath on guitar and vocals. Soon after his death Chicago was another band. I only liked their first LP's.

I have this LP, but my turntable's currently broken, so I was looking for some Chicago tonight. There is only one other reactor who's listened to this piece, which I think is a masterpiece concatenating several totally disjunct segments into one long stream of incredible sound. I LOVE this piece and, as I mentioned, nobody save one has done it. Thank you. Oh, almost forgot, thanks especially for appreciating my favorite drummer, Danny Seraphine. I noticed you mouthed a "...woooo..." when he did that little fill toward the recapitulation of the main theme toward the end. I LOVED this reaction.

Wait, this isn't Chicago. This is Chicago Transit Authority, my favorite album from them.

The 80’s Chicago was pop schmaltz. Terry Kath was the heart and soul of Chicago.

Music so good that it’s hard to find words to do it justice. I don’t know, those first four or five albums some of the best, most innovative music I’ve ever heard except of course for SD. The talent level of early Chicago made their music a joy to listen to and it still is to this day. Thank you for diving into this hole my Brother. ❤️❤️🎸🎺🎷

I'm always tempted to introduce someone to this band with one of the live cuts from Tanglewood, however, this song is actually meant for that exact reason so why not use it.

Question 67 & 68 from their first album (Chicago Transition Authority) is another banger... “I Just Want to Be Free”, “I’m a Man”...... arguably this (the first album was the best). The 2nd is awesome, too.

I’ll be honest and say that I had a couple of early 70’s Chicago albums, but I never heard them this far back. It’s really good! This reminds me of my sophomore year of college when I would go into the student union building and go into the different listening rooms and sample different types of music with a couple of friends! I would have enjoyed this if I had been older back then. Looking forward to continuing down the rabbit hole with you!!

They were first called Chicago transit Authority then shorten it to Chicago after the first album because they were threatened to be sued. We just called them CTA in the 70s.

Need to react to Does anybody really know what time it is after the Introduction. They should be listened to back to back. I was 17 when my Dad introduced me to them. I'm 63 now. Great days having a musical Dad.

Welcome to the best brassy classic rock band! Their "Better End Soon" would be an excellent reaction for the current global protests. On a similar note, the band Brass Against does an amazing cover of Rage Against the Machine's "Killing in the Name". Stay safe and keep on rockin', Man!

I loved Terry Kath. He absolutely owned this great track that he created here. Terry was a creative giant on the guitar. But I want to say something that is rarely said about Chicago as a band, and this track is proof of it: Peter Cetera's bass playing was BETTER than Terry's guitar playing on this track (and I believe overall). Listen closely to Peter's bass guitar performance on this track and see if I am right....

Besides being their debut album, Columbia, the record company put so much faith in them, they let them produce a double LP album (if Chicago took a royalty cut).

Great ‘introduction’ to the band - every player had a stage.. band insisted that it’d be a double debut, unheard of.. record company made them take reduced royalties.. they got their way and first 4 were doubles - they had too much awesomeness to share .. Terry Kath best 2-3 guitarist’s ever

The only real dud on this LP is Free Form Guitar. The Kathheads say it's some cosmic creation but reading the liner notes he was wanking around at a sound check looking for feedback sounds he cour re-create on command. For a little commentary on politics in 1968 check out the "the whole world is watching' chant from the Democratic convention riots. State of the Union and Dialogue pt I&II from later LP's continue this trend.
