Terry Kath is a guitar god. I'm sure others will talk about it too, but Terry died in early 1978 and Chicago's sound changed afterward, going toward the smoother soft-rock sound of "If You Leave Me Now" led by band member Peter Cetera. Many Chicago fans (myself included) view the two eras a two separate bands. The craziest thing (to me) about 70s Chicago is that their first 3 albums are all double albums released within 3 years. That's an insane amount of output. You really can't go wrong with any selection from them in this time period. "I'm a Man" is a must-listen, and I've always been a big fan of "Beginnings." Of course, no guitar rock delve into the early 70s is complete without listening to "One of These Days" by Pink Floyd!!

My earliest memory as a toddler (in the 70's) is lying on a blanket in an amphitheater in Kansas, eating grapes from bags out of a cooler my grandma packed. Chicago never really did tour with Earth Wind and Fire until the early to mid 1990s. And how can you say that you're from Chicago and not hear about the group? Robert Lamm, who wrote the song, said that the title was in reference to looking at a clock and trying to figure what time it was. Jimi Hendrix's exact quote was, "You guys are great. The horns are like another set of lungs. And your guitar player is better than me." After Hendrix saw them at The Whiskey A Go Go, where the conversation with Robert Lamm that the quote was from, he had them as an opening act on tour with him. Walter Parazaider was actually first chair in the Chicago symphony. And James Pankow has been doing their horn arrangements ever since the first album, The Chicago Transit Authority. They had to shorten their name to Chicago because Mayor Richard Daley threatened to sue the band for using a service name.

That's not what it's about at all. In the 70s artists had to disguise references to drugs they couldn't outright say it like today's artists. 25 or 6 to 4 means how much weed they bought at the time. $25 which gave them enough grams for 6 or 4 joints.

First time I heard this song was in '92 at my HS talent show. The band nerds (who were known to be into jazz) stepped up and they announced the song. I groaned because I expected some trippy experimental BS. Once they started playing, my jaw dropped to the floor. They absolutely killed the song and got a standing O. I love this song and it always brings me back to that. I think I realized something about the power of music in that moment.

The song has a bit of irony to it as the lyrics describe him trying to write this song, which in turn... becomes the song. Searching for something to say, getting up to splash my face, sitting crosslegged on the floor... all these lines describe either what he was doing or seeing at the time. The title is the time on the clock.

Chicago is so versatile going from this song which is so upbeat, to "Does anybody really know what time it is?" as a slow and pensive tone, to "Beginnings" as an overall happy and endearing song that covers the type of love everyone tries to find. If you cover more of Chicago, I recommend these two. Even as a millennial, Chicago is still able to reach my generation. This was written by keyboardist Robert Lamm and was a song about writer's block trying to write a song. 25 or 6 to 4 meant 25 or six minutes before 4 in the morning. It's like, "I can't think of what to write, so I'll write about the experience of not being able to figure out what to write." Brilliant concept. I haven't heard "If You Leave Me Now" in a long time. Beautiful song. If you want another beautiful ballad by Chicago, try "Colo(u)r my World" which is a beautiful little ballad sung by late guitarist Terry Kath.

I grew up with Chicago, I had two brothers loved Chicago. There were always consider a "Orchestra Band", because they incorporated the full spectrum of instruments into most of their music. Peter Cetera sang lead on this track - despite his jaw being wired shut. A few months before the recording session, the band went to a baseball game at Dodger Stadium, where their hometown team, the Chicago Cubs, beat the Dodgers, leaving four marines angry and ready to take their aggression out on someone. That someone was Cetera, who was singled out by his long hair as much as his team loyalty. The ensuing brawl sent him to intensive care with a jaw broken in three places. When it came time to record the song, his jaw was still wired shut.

And that solo right there in that song is the longest Solo in a commercial hit record ever. Sadly, Terry Kath died accidentally when he shot himself in the head at a party showing his friends his gun collection. They continued on after his death to much success, but we can only wonder where they would have gone if Terry Kath would have lived. 👍😎🍺

In a 2013 interview, Robert Lamm said he composed "25 or 6 to 4" on a twelve-string guitar with only ten strings - it was missing the two low E strings - and that he wrote the lyrics in one day. The band first rehearsed the song at the Whisky a Go Go.[2] Lamm said the song is about trying to write a song in the middle of the night. The song's title is the time at which the song is set: 25 or 26 minutes before 4 AM.[3][4] Because of the unique phrasing of the song's title, "25 or 6 to 4" has been interpreted to mean everything from a quantity of illicit drugs to the name of a famous person in code.[5] The song's opening guitar riff has been compared to chord progressions and riffs in other songs. In the opinion of writer Melissa Locker: ...the opening guitar riff from Green Day’s 'Brain Stew' bears a striking similarity to the opening stanza of Chicago’s '25 or 6 to 4.

"Introduction" opens their debut, Chicago Transit Authority, and is a perfect showcase of what the band was capable of, with interesting and varied sections.
