Waiting for the break of day Searching for something to say Flashing lights against the sky Giving up, I close my eyes Sitting cross-legged on the floor Twenty five or 6 to 4 Staring blindly into space Getting up to splash my face Wanting just to stay awake Wondering how much I can take Should I try to do some more? Twenty five or 6 to 4, oh yeah! So glad my older brother introduced me to Chicago by buying me their greatest hits back around 1975. I was 13. I was hooked but I never told him. He died a few years ago at 70 yrs old. He did eventually know I liked them but they became my favorite band when I finally "grew up" into my 40s Lol. They are still my favorite band. Though I mostly listen to gospel music now I cant seem to put these guys away for good. They are in my blood and it gives me good memories of my brother. My crazy brother that I loved dearly bought a Pacer in 75. He taught me how to ride his Honda motorcycle and took me to Taco Bell for my very first time. He served in Vietnam. He came home and was kind of a hippie Lol. I wish he were still around but I will see him again in Heaven. They have different music up there but I'm good with that! You know why? They got horns! Lol And it glorifies God. Sorry for rambling. Felt good though.

Jerry, this song brings me memories of my brother also. I am 80 this month and my brother was seven years younger than me and our dad got us both into playing music in his band in our early teens. After I bought Chicago 2 in 1970 and my brother and I sat in my mom's living room floor and listened to it for a couple of hours, including hearing 25 or 6 to 4 about a dozen times, this became my favorite record since then. At least 3 or 4 mornings a week, I go on KZread and listen to it really loud so my neighbors can hear it. It always energizes me as soon as that opening bass and guitar starts up the intro. My brother passed away from cancer in 2016, and I always think of him when I hear it because the lyrics describe perfectly how he and I stayed up all night writing and recording our songs, then as the sun came up, we would be standing there with headphones on smiling at each other as we listened to what we had created together. I miss my brother, but this musical masterpiece brings me closer to him whenever I hear it.

I surely do agree with you about Terry's guitar solo, and actually every bit of the guitar playing on that song. This may sound crazy or made up, but sometimes I get a few tears slipping out of my eyes during the guitar parts, it is sooooo good. I feel great music artistry deep in my soul. I seem to recall that the brass and woodwinds (Walter Parazaider on sax) were a unique trait for Chicago. Bands such as the Beatles would bring them in for a particular song, but Chicago they were part of the band's regular line up!

@@ronstone6839 Yep, they are the coolest sounding horns ever, They have a funk band vibe but with a rock beat, and even some jazz vibes too// So much going on. There were a few bands around at this time with a horn section like Wings. This song was 1970, Wings started in 1971. There were quite a few funk/R&B/Soul bands with horn sections. What about KC and the Sunshine band, they had a horn section but they started in 73. Elvis had a band with a good horn section in the late 60's. There were a few around.

I usually like songs for their melody, not their lyrics (which can get a Catholic boy explaining himself, at times!). I like everything about 25 or 6 to 4. It was a genius lyric in the song and fit perfectly. Thank you, Chicago! Live long and prosper, 25 or 6 to 4. BTW, it was 26.

I remember when these guys were at their peak in the UK. Yes, they were great there too. So much great music in the late 60s and early 70s. I read a lot on here about Terry Kath - don't get me wrong, he's enormous - but the I read nothing about the rhythm section. Doesn't anyone else notice the phenomenal drumming, or am I just not on target? I think Terry himself would say it's the band together, not just one guy.

I LOVE the older Chicago songs w/ the horns...ohhh yeah! I was in a Drum Corp I twirled the rifle. I was color guard. But we had a Fantastic horn assembly and with it being 1975 76 77...We did Alot of Chicago songs 🎵 And when we went to competitions, we'd always get 1st place! Because we did Chicago songs that were on the radio and we had a huge horn.line. I married my first love, he played baritone. My son ended up playing baritone in the Bristol. RI 4th of July parade..America's oddest parade. 🎺🎺📯🎶🎵🎶🎺🥁🥁

"The human mind is a wonderful thing. It starts working before you're even born and doesn't stop again until you sit down to write a song." OK, so the quote is from Roger Miller, not Robert Lamm. Still, Robert perfectly walks us through the anguish of writer's block - and it turns out to be one of Chicago's best of all time.
