I was visiting a high school friend in So Cal in 1984 and we had a surf to Trestles. It was quite the adventure for us 14 year olds. Back then it really wasn't that crowded. Maybe 20 people in the lineup. Out of nowhere Cheyne shows up and tears the place to pieces. He blasted a lip and sprayed the hell out of my friend. After the surf session, we walked up the path behind him as he left. He was with some other surfer but I didn't recognize him. Great memories! I still have a McCoy 5'5" Lazor Zap Single fin and a Star Fin I bought on that trip. I bought the board for $20 from my friend's buddy. What a steal!

My favorite surfer of all time. I saw him when he came to a local surf shop. I agree that he was highly underrated.

Always admired him, not as much for being an amazing surfer, as for being someone who had the guts to follow his own path.

I watched Cheyne catch his first wave at Ponce Inlet waaay back when he came and stayed with my local shaper MAD DOG Bernie Crouch. Very cool guy and extremely powerful surfer. The waves were only 2 foot and he popped such a vertical off the lip like no one else can.

Some blokes watched one day, Cheyne Horan and Geoff McCoy strode down the beach carrying these two boards, one blue and one yellow, like nothing ever seen before. Some great surfing was seen that afternoon on those boards that were like no other before. Winged fins, very shortboards with fat noses the boards seem to glide over the water, they'd turn as if on a pivot. Speed across the face was amazing. Best all round surfer of my generation for sure and yes maybe the most under rated of all time.

Cheyne WON the first OP Pro. I was there. He did a backside 360 to win it, but I was distracted by a girl on a beach wearing a G-String bikini--the first I ever saw

If you watch closely Cheyne against Curren.Cheyne's wide tail zap is blazing 10 times faster.I have been shaping wider tails into my board for the last 10 years.

I wish I could ride a single fin and maintain speed after big turns like Cheyne. I think the secret is the McCoy boards because they naturally find the tube.

He was something else on a skateboard (Coke team) then on a surfboard just exceptionally fluid and strong

@MrZebos Thank you. I have always thought Cheyne under appreciated by the masses. I still think he is the best and most complete surfer of all time. I don't measure by world titles like some either.

Cheyne is in Brazil right now surfing in the Masters as we type. I think ASP will stream it. I hope he wins another Maters title. Agree with you. Those boards still hold up if you ask me. Prove designs. Now with retro they are getting a fair shake.

Yes he did. I thought he won the second as well, but the judges like lip smacks rather than carving all over the wave. All the folks sitting with me on the beach thought he won as well.

Having more fins on your board does not make you a better surfer.

  • @hannotn

Maybe not, but more fins (in the right configuration) allow you to use more of the wave and surf more radically.
