Years ago at the gm dealership I worked at, our local Napa store sold reman engines done by a company called gopher motors...😐😒🤔 I kid you not! We had a ford areostar brought in for a new engine (why do people bring other makes of cars to dealerships? Its like going to a vet when you're sick) anyway, these SUCKED to change engines in, engine #1 had 0 oil pressure at startup. Ok, tear it apart, again...engine #2 had rod knock..#3 blown head gasket at start. #4 was the charm... Some good came of this, by engine #4, we could change it like a NASCAR pit crew.

Eric I watched both these vids. I did this with my Truck on jack stands. It was a Bear. Yep that Y-Pipe was a pain I looked at it scratching my head. Finally removed the crossmember, and still had to finagle it out. Being in my Dads garage I was at the point of no return. I heated the exhaust manifolds with Mapp gas, and quenched with PB. Luckily my trusty Harbor Freight impact took the bolts out. I had atrans jack from a failed attempt at a trans removal when I was younger, from one of those traveling tool sales, lol. It worked, it mounts to a floor jack. I just popped those e-clips off the cooler lines with a pick. Eric you are extremely right about the dipstick Tube, I put the trans first and had to figure out how to get it in after. Also broke the exhaust flange bolts, exactly as you stated they were like wheel studs. I’m glad that’s all I broke. Well I also broke a little of the mounting flange, where the t-case mounts to the trans. It’s been in for 12k Miles so I’m lucky mine didn’t Crap out. I bought it used from a truck that was in an accident with a cow. The guys Dad had a trans shop and had rebuilt it, it had about 30k on it. So he says. Also before I changed my trans the trans cable, the ears broke from that cable, like you stated. I ordered a replacement. I’m kind of proud of myself. Not too shabby for a garage mechanic.

Fingers crossed! Great Video! I know very little about automatics, learn a little as time went on, but stayed away from the internals! One tech in our shop was a GM dealer tech, fixed a trans in our shop using the old trans and rebuilt to get it to fit AND WORK in the truck. It's still running! Hopefully this one in the video is too! Worse one I saw was in a brand new Ford truck with a dead trans. I got under the vehicle, and saw a Ford REMAN sticker on the trans! That went over like a lead balloon! It finally got a new trans WITH a great warranty from Ford! Go figure!

My uncles 04 Caddy engine blew at 55K, I live in WA and he is in AZ. I got on the internet and called a few local shops in AZ and talked to them, One shop was very familiar with Northstar problems and if the engine was a total they only replaced with Jaspar engines. Had the car towed to that shop and when they started it, the engine put a rod threw the block. New Jaspar engine installed (yes it was spendy) but runs better than new. Your comments on other rebuilders makes me feel better about the choice we made.

When I lived in Milwaukee, I used to drive past ETE!! haha! People seemed to think they were good.... I guess anyone could have a bad one.... Hope it works out. Great video!!! I personally love your "nuts & bolts" videos. I learn so much.... Mostly, I learn that someday, somehow, someway, I need to get a hoist.... Haha! Kidding. I also was amused by your comments, as always.... a couple of my friends are real techs, at big outfits... they all say the exact same thing you did. It's hard to sell to a paying customer, but, if it's YOUR car or truck, and you're planning on keeping it, just do the Jasper, it's light years better, and their warranty is gold plated....

Another awesome video. -- I don't know about what I'm gonna talk about here so feel free to buck slap meh ... but I think there is so much truth in how much some small shops or maybe even any size shop for that matter, depending on how much honor the shop's powers to be have, to eat the costs for items not covered by warranty with respect to any "fully covered fix from beginning to out the door, cuz it's done right" warranty work. -- Suxors to say the least. I kinda think the lack of full warranty coverage tends to help breed those bad shops. They should cover completely whatever they sell. They know what consumables would be needed to complete the work. Those items are not the customers nor are they the repair shops fault. There should be limitations of course but consumables need to be covered. It's a sad day that they don't. -- Perhaps those bad shops feel that they need, or want or don't even mind sliding into the dark arena of making money by hook or crook or when they feel the need or want to make up the losses from the other jobs" from innocent and fearful customer type folks just trying to find an honest automotive repair shop. -- Hey by the way, You know you're in the big league when you sell your really great books on advanced technical web sites.... Engine Performance Diagnostics by ScannerDanner on AES Wave Automotive Diagnostic Tool's web site. ;) rock-n-roll baby - rock-n-roll

Glad the second time was the charm ... and not the 3rd or 4th time! This reminds me of a guy back in high school that was dating this girl I knew - he was a few years older, already had his license for a few years . He'd take us all around joyriding in his Buick Regal. On every straight section of road, he'd accelerate to 45MPH, then jack the thing into reverse HAHAHAHAA! Reverse drop city! Would lay epic patches with lots of smoke. Nice "jay hooks" as we call 'em in MA. I laughed hysterically the entire time. Was alot of fun to watch someone else destroy their equipment. He did 5 or 6 drops like that with us. I couldn't believe it didn't blow right then and there. Talked to him 3 months later, "Hey man, where's the Regal?" "Ahh, the tranny blew." HAHAHAAHA! You don't say? :D Got my new shop built! Added on to my barn. Reason I mention this is my buddy (he does this for a living) used Zip board for the walls and roof sheathing. Thanks to you, it's now known as ZIPPITY-ZAP board, HAHAHA! I couldn't stop saying that every sheet we nailed up. :D Should have my lift installed in a month or 2 - CAN'T WAIT! Should save my tools from being thrown, and my voice from high-volume obscenities. :)

An NPT thread has much more taper than a British taper (BSPT) - Also there are two types of straight thread we use - straight thread will an o-ring is common worldwide and are called by a variety of names. There is also the notorious BSPP - British parallel pipe thread - hate those bastids - liquid sealants are the only thing that works with them.

There’s a different looking hole in the flex plate. If you start with the hole with the one that looks like square first almost, you can tighten it down and the other two holes will be lined up already. Saves a few. Free tip Friday on Saturday. Most newer flex plates have that square looking hole.

Supersexymodz the oblong hole is usually marked with a pink bingo dabber from factory. Saves 5-10 mins for sure. :). Plus I missed the removal but if you install a bolt the size of the torque converter bolts and push it back into the pump housing it keeps from getting stuck on the pilot.. especially on the 6t40s.

You are so right in saying that techs almost have to specialize in certain areas these days, the technology is so complicated. When I worked at the dealership we had to do any repair though on account it was just me and one other tech. What won't kill me will only make me smarter I guess. The ETE reman company should reimburse you for all of your expense though, it's not your fault they send out a crap product. I feel your pain though in saying the customer always wants the cheapest repair, although for longevity purposes it may not be the best. I would say to them, I can get you a GM reman unit or a used (low mileage) transmission from a salvage yard. I don't have hardly any faith in the aftermarket stuff, whether it be an engine or wiper blade.

Just to share a story - I have rebuilt Powerglides and Turbohydramatics many many years ago, but watching videos of current transmissions being rebuilt gives me an ice cream headache. I had my Escape tranny rebuilt by a shop with the best reputation in Litchfield CT. Paid a lot - was very happy with the work and the result (and the warranty) 3 months later it started acting up and Jeff honored the warranty and took it all apart - claimed he got a bad part (old design) from his supplier and had to eat 9 hours of labor. I asked him if he got any satisfaction from his supplier - "Yeah - I got a new part". I found ETE through a racing connection and thought the paid labor warranty might make this company attractive, even to a transmission shop. Eric did not seem to be happy with their tech support, but do they stand behind their warranty?

I noticed the dislikes. I suspect these dislikers don't work on cars that are routinely subjected to salt. Where I live in Oregon, a Honda can last for 20 years easily. My 2004 Accord has only been driven in the snow a dozen times or so, and never on a salted road. It's still rust-free. You do what is necessary to keep the car on the road, not preserve it for decades. I build computers (I did spend three years rebuilding engines and 18 years as a machinist). In my experience, engines that have been overheated to the point of failure, are goners. And today, computer parts are MUCH worse than even 15 years ago, and warranties are pure make-believe. If an electronic part fails, the buyer eats the loss.

I did the 4L60E in my 93 Chevy... Now those transmissions, you better have a plan with that dipstick tube. First one I did, it took me longer to put the dipstick tube in than it did to put the transmission in... trans had shifting issues, so for round 2 it was much easier... Around 2 hours total, but with the first round it took me around 3 hours... Its not bad really... the 4L60E was a electronic version of the 700R4, which was all weak transmissions to begin with... In my opinion, the best automatic transmission ever made was the 350 and 400 turbos... I had a 78 Chevy, and I couldnt kill it... Burn outs, hauled over 7000 pounds a lot... Couldnt hurt the old beast...

if all of thre updates are put in, heavy duty cage, 5 pinion sprag,, rebuilt valve body, rebuilt pump, borg warner clutch packs, shift kit, aluminium servos instead of plastic,, new harness in trans, new shift solenoids,, they will last. trouble is most shops dont really rebuild them, they replace half of the kit, and hope for the best/

Always make sure that the correct dipstick is in the transmission. I have found people breaking the dipstick and running to the scrap yard to get a replacement and picking the wrong one. They run the transmission with the wrong fluid level because the dipstick is the wrong length.

If those threaded all the way in they need "O" rings like you said. Did it state on the package they were NPT on quick disconnects. I had to make custom fittings for my zo6 vette when I added after market radiator in it, which they sent barbed fittings and I wanted to stay with the factory quick diconnects.

Bad rebuilds seems to be the norm no matter what part of the country you're in. That sounds like the worst warranty I've ever heard of, sounds like a complete rip-off. That 's funny, the trans. co. being in WI. That's where I am and that's where I've had shoddy trans. work from too. Think it was A-1 in Madison area. Thanks for the video. Just watched this for a second time and I've got to say you are an extremely patient man. Tell you what, I'll be pissed as hell and throw stuff for you, how's that? ....lol.

Eric .I bought a transfer case from this supplier, and first one was junk.2500 miles later, had to warranty it.4 wheel drive on the unit never worked from when it was originally installed. So they sent me a defective unit the very 1st 1. I argued with the company and explain to them that the 1st unit was defective upon being installed. That for high was not engaging. However they sent a replacement unit, my mechanic install the unit , you're right they only paid $50 per hour and it was 3.3 hours that I was reimbursed. I had to jump through it seems like several holes to get my reimbursement from this company. I submitted all the forms and proper paperwork and receipts in it took close to 3 months to get my reimbursement of hounding them every 2 weeks. I will never again by a remanned transfer case or motor or tranny from this company . I submitted receipts for Transfer case fluid and the gasket, they did reimburse me for 3.3 hours of labor the fluid and the gasket. my mechanic was nice enough to charge me the same rate to install it as he did the 1st time , did not charge me to diagnose it however it did tie up his lift for like almost a week. It took them 4 days from the time the phone call was placed to get the remain replacment unit to us. You're right the price on the unit was substantially cheaper than any other remain company in it came with a 3 year unlimited mileage warranty. I purchased the unit through rock auto and they are a supplier for rock auto. No fault of rock auto .Eric o..thanks for the great video, and being a awesome, mechanic, farther,husband,person...god bless...peace

My 2002 GMC Sierra 1500 has 250,000 + miles on the engine and transmission and has never been opened up, still running good. Engine gets oil and filter changed with Castro’s GTX every 5000 miles and trans serviced every 50,000 miles, never had it flushed, should do that soon but have a hard time trusting a shop to do it right and thorough.
