Chevy Chase interview: 'I'm proud to be who I am'

Chevy Chase was "Saturday Night Live's" first breakout star, but he fell off the map after the '90s. Then came “Community” and controversy. Now sober and ready to work, no one will hire him. Subscribe to The Washington Post on KZread: bit.ly/2qiJ4dy

There’s definitely a difference between Danny and Chevy. Danny was still making a lot of stuff up until he was cast in the show in 2006, Chevy’s last leadings role in a mainstream movie was Vegas Vacation in 1997 after that he was doing guest star appearances, failed TV shows and straight to DVD stuff for kids

I think you hit it right on the nail. Even when the drama was at its freshest, Joel was always careful in interviews to be watchful of his words about Chevy the person and never said anything bad about him. I also saw when Joel was doing the press run for the movie "A Futile and Stupid Gesture" in 2018 (in which Joel literally plays the young version of Chevy Chase and his time with National Lampoon, SNL and his first few movies) that Joel said he talks to Chevy often to just catch up and see how he is. He even showed Chevy the final version of the movie for his approval and Chevy reportedly was very please with how Joel played him. I think Joel was one of the only (at least publically) people from the show who was actually on Chevy's side and felt that he was not in the wrong to be upset, but knows Chevy could've handled it a little better

He and Ken Jeong got a pretty raw deal, I think. Everyone got to grow and become more three-dimensional, but they just became more and more absurd and unlikable. I totally get that there were issues behind the scenes with Chevy not liking the long hours and being difficult... but it's also clear Harmon punished him in the scripts, and that just made it worse. Toxic goes both ways sometimes.

This interview is absolutely horrendous! Whatever Chevy Chase may or may not be, he invited you into his home only for you to antagonize him, remind him how others think negatively of him, and overlay the entire segment with the most degrading narration possible. This is exactly how you turn any human being into an arsehole -- by pushing them further and further into isolation, giving them no choice but to become the most extreme version of what they believe others already perceive them to be. I honestly feel terrible for Chevy just watching this. You exploited him in the worst way. Just disgraceful!

He would not made it back then if it wasn't for his good looks. Times changed, one get older, and more difficult to meet the competition from younger people. Planet Duh I must admit I don't know much of the story with Chevy since the 80's to now. I grew up back then and remember well his movies from the height of his career. I don't want to judge or something, it's not of my buisness, but it struc me a bit seeing the interview that why didn't his wife, or who she is, at least made him shave and put on a shirt, when being interviewed. Maybe she did, and he didn't care. Fair enough, looks like he is relative okay, cozy house, not living alone, doing his life not caring too much what others might think and say negatively about him

Oh dude that's not what I got out of this at all! If anything he was being completely honest, and did not make him look bad at all! I saw Chevy chase as someone the media stated was hard to work with, but thanks to this, I am reminded that he is a man like everyone else! We all get old, we are all going to get old... And even though he has a bad rep now that outweighs his good deeds.... He's still Funny. And he still did those good deeds... We must remind ourselves that perfection is only a disappointing farce, and we are so far from it, that its presence would actually bother our very existence... Yet we continue to thrive for it, "Trying to catch the end of the rainbow" a literal impossible task... Maybe he wont change who he is, but that's not for us to decide anyway so why do we care what he does in his personal time?

Bill whom I had also the pleasure of working with is the 2nd most miserable man I've ever met. Seth MacFarlane takes that honor. Chevy was huge box office superstar in the 80s. I’m not sure it was exactly that way. Chevy started on SNL in season 1 and became a huge star overnight. Murray wasn’t even on SNL in the first season, though they did work together at National Lampoon. Chevy left after the first season and Murray took over his role on Weekend Update. I’m sure there was a lot of pressure for Bill to be just as hilarious as Chevy, causing tension between the two. When Chevy returned and hosted SNL in 1978 they actually fought each other right before Chevy took the stage for his monologue, but I doubt Murray was telling Chevy he wasn’t funny since at the time Chevy was a much more popular comedian than Murray.

Many years ago my grandmother was at a doctor's appointment at a famous hospital in Los Angles and I was with my father waiting for her in the waiting room. I noticed a guy walk into the room from the outside hall, and sat down right next to another man. It caught my attention because we were the only people waiting, there were plenty of seats so it was odd for someone to choose a seat right next to someone else. Then the guy took his hand and put it on the guys knee and started moving his hand up his thigh. The guy waiting jumped up suprised and realized it was Chevy Chase, Chevy glanced at me and had a sly smile on his face, and I was laughing pretty hard. I never spoke to him, but it was better then that, he performed for me, at a time when I was concerned and sad about the health of a love one. I will always be grateful to Chevy Chase for cheering me up. I will always remember that.

Someone here recommended the recent Netflix interview with Norm MacDonald interviewing Chevy Chase. I totally recommend that one. Chevy Chase was hilarious in it and it's a much much much better interview than this in my opinion. This interview was basically looking at the sad things that have happened to him. While sad, it was certainly a one sided interview and it didn't look at all aspects of his career. The Norm MacDonald interview certainly shows Chevy in true form. He's relaxed, he's in a great mood, he's funny, and Norm asks him all sorts of questions on his amazing career. After watching that, it's very very very clear to see that Chevy has had wayyyyy more positive times that bad ones.

This is sad to me. I’m 46 years old, I grew up watching Chase. Chase is a big part of my childhood, just like Robin Williams was and Star Wars and other 80 icon films and actors. I will always love Chase and he will always make me smile. It’s sad to see him having so much difficulty in his later years, even if some of these difficulties may be self brought.

I guess he made it in the 70's much because of his looks, quite handsome back then, and had a kind of humor that was a hit back in the days. Without his looks he would never made it. More of a kind of superstar with in a niche, which was quite big back then but the fans have been fewer and fwer/grown up. Not something that one could float on for decades after decades. He was not able/willing to 'call it a day' when the 'game was good', and change work.

I like this from an article earlier this year: Speaking to The New Yorker about his time on Community, Glover said he viewed Chase as a legend who refused to recognize he was at the nadir of his career. “I just saw Chevy as fighting time - a true artist has to be O.K. with his reign being over,” Glover said. “I can’t help him if he’s thrashing in the water. But I know there’s a human in there somewhere-he’s almost too human.” Alot people have a hard time having multiple viewpoints on one subject, one person because they don't perfectly match our ideological preferences. We don't have to make up excuses for Chase to understand he is a genius, and understand the man is also angry, borderline hateful.

Yeah, but look at Steve Martin, or Martin Short, or Bill Murray. They've all gotten old and they all have their quirks (mostly Murray), but what happened here is just awful. He had this softening in the 90s - Cops and Robbersons bombed, but was mildly watchable, his talk show was terrible. Vegas Vacation was okay, his cameo in Dirty Deeds was probably one of the best things he had done since the late 1980s. His performance in Snow Day was decent, if unremarkable. But between 2000 and 2009 everything just collapsed. This guy should be writing books and plays. He should be doing comedy and drama. He should be starring in Woody Allen movies, or Coen Brother movies the way Murray stars in Wes Anderson movies. He was great, but a lot more happened here than just getting old.
