Chevrolet Bolt EV: Rear Window Wiper Replacement

Ғылым және технология

I thought I'd provide a quick tip on replacing the rear window wiper in the Chevrolet Bolt EV. It's not necessarily straightforward, but it's very easy to do with the correct parts. I hope this helps!

    Thanks. This helped me yesterday. Also, the system at my local Car Quest said it used a 13-inch blade. That’s clearly not the OEM size - but a 13-inch blade fits and I appreciate the additional space it clears on the glass.

    *Thank you, this upload was very helpful* - I have a 2019 Bolt EV and this was my first replacement of the rear wiper. According to the manual in the M-y-C-h-e-v-r-o-l-e-t app, the rear wiper blade is 11.8". The GM part # is 84215609. However, I was able to get a D-u-r-a-l-a-s-t DL-12 blade at a national chain auto parts store. 12" blades are often left out of retail displays of some stores. Two inserts plus instructions were included with the DL-12. I used the LARGER of the 2 inserts, and mounted it over the wiper pin in the NOTCH CLOSEST to the "J" edge of the INSERT. The other notch is irrelevant. The extra 0.2" in length was not an issue and the outer cover slipped and clicked as shown in the video.

    My 2017 BoltEV rear wiper fell down. I thought it would be a plastic gear stripped, so I was trying to figure out how to remove the arm. Your video was the perfect answer. When I saw how you took the cover off the arm, I followed your lead. When I got the cover off, the nut holding the arm was so loose the wiper blade had fallen down. Start to finish, job done in less than 5 minutes. Sorry, I stopped watching so I could take the cover off, and the problem was so obvious I didn't finish your presentation. Grateful for your video help!

    Some/many off the shelf blades will NOT take the clip from the plastic cover. There needs to be an opening in the replacement blade at the J-clip that accepts the plastic cover clip - it needs to be wide enough an opening. Trico "exact fit" 11" did NOT fit the cover. I removed the rubber blade and metal braces from that blade and put it on the old one and it works, but it is a hinky work-around. Anyone with successful after-market blades, please post. Otherwise it looks like OEM is the way to go.

    This is off subject but I have creaking at the rear of the 2017 bolt whenever I'm on uneven terrain. Dealer said it was the shocks but I don't honestly think it is. I checked other videos of bolts creaking and the last conclusion was the rear axle which another dealership said the bolt doesn't have a rear axle and dealership also assumed my warranty was up which is not. My question is, does the 2017 bolt have a rear axle and if so can the creaking on uneven terrain be the axle?

  • @newscoulomb3705

    @newscoulomb3705

    The Bolt EV doesn't have a rear axle. The wheels are connected by a Watts linkage. I have heard others with issues about creaking, but I'm not sure whether that's inherent to the design or something that can be fixed. It might be worth going to a different dealership to get a second opinion.

    Since I have the premier I can't see ever having a need to use the rear wiper on my Bolt. If my wiper ever falls apart like yours has I may just remove the wiper arm altogether rather than just replace the blade Even on my Mazda3, I've only used the rear wiper 2-3 times in the almost 18 years I've owned it

    Yeah, the only reason I knew the rubber was coming loose was I accidentally activated it and saw it dragging. Still, I do get a decent amount of dirt and debris on the back (dirt and gravel roads), so I sometimes need to clear the rear window. Having a rearview camera might be nice, though.

    Technology? Yes. GM still needs to start producing and selling those EVs, though. Unfortunately, most of their current production capacity is being directed toward fixing at-risk Bolt EVs and EUVs, but with the Ultium factories coming online now, that shouldn't be a constraint anymore.
