Don't forget, on piano the late Michel Graillier. Maybe one of the best sidemen of Chet - he plays ten years with Chet. RIP

So true
4am fucking perfection. The lyrics, the singing, the trumpeteering. Dislikers have never had their heart broken.

In fact, he was a prolific recording artist (he recorded over 100 albums during his lifetime) and made a profound mark on jazz, helping to shape its course during a career that lasted almost 40 years. Three decades after his death, the world's fascination with Chet Baker is as strong as ever. Source: uDiscover Music
The song, that song The sadness of Chet Broken man, broken soul, broken all, Costello touched the cord Broke my heart, made me cry.
The bass player - he's Chet's dream.
This song rips my heart everytime I listen to it. The text is so beautifull, so fair and raw.... Some people really don't know what love is and too much tears are shed because of them...
Wow, I've never heard Elvis Costello like this. Chet Baker, of course.

I too was impressed by Costello's sensitivity in this performance. But then I found out he wrote one of Chet's signature tunes, "Born to be Blue". He is not as good a vocalist as he is a songwriter, but honor is due.

@@johntechwriter It's Elvis' voice that captivates me.
I think Costello's performance is great from phrasing to hitting his notes, holding them, listening to the music, interaction and chemistry with Baker and the other musicians. (AND no pressure performing with one of the greatest vocalists and instrumentalists of the 21st century.) To me it's a successful performance, and I have new respect for Costello.
You don't know what love is Until you've learned the meaning of the blues Until you've loved a love you had to loose You don't know what love is You don't know how lips hurt Until you've kissed and had to pay the cost Until you've flipped you're heart and you have lost You don't know what love is Do you know how a lost heart fears The thought of reminiscing And how lips have taste of tears Loose the taste for kissing You don't know how hearts burn For love that cannot live, yet never dies Until you've faced each dawn with sleepless eyes You don't know what love is You don't know how hearts burn For love that cannot live, yet never dies Until you've faced each dawn with sleepless eyes How could you know what love is, what love is What love is Source: LyricFind

"Until you've learned the meaning of the blues"
It feels as the roots of Sade were born in this performance. Wonderfully soft and deep. Makes you want to stay in the mood forever.

Who's the singer?
tough listening to Elvis try to sing the melody on this tune. Not sure he really knows it.
I love Chet but a pentatonic and Elvis Costello is hardly a legacy. Good on Elvis for doing he gig.
this is horrible - please stop singing and let Chet take over

@@willemjansen1141 it was stated he couldn’t sing, not that he couldn’t sing or phrase jazz in a way conducive to your enjoyment. His breath control, tonality and tuning is all precise. Why make absolute comments?

I sat behind the board in jazz radio for 30 years. , 15 of which my program was 4 hours of ballads 5 days a week -- the better vocalist for this , as well as sitting next to Chet , would be Grady Tate -- Elvis doesn't do it ...

I can sing better better then him 73 year old Derek sings on you tube, now 81 still sing better then him.
Costello is an awful singer. His intonation is terrible, as with someone you'd cringe at in a karaoke bar. Why is he famous?
