Chess Vibes CRUSHED Me - Not ONCE, But TWICE!

I reached out to Nelson Lopez of Chess Vibes with a challenge.
I wanted to play a game with him now as a benchmark. With the goal of playing him one year from now to see how much my chess game has improved.
This video recaps the benchmark games against Nelson.
Feel free to comment on my play, so that I may get better!!!

For the differences in the knight and bishop the bishop is a long range piece and can waste a tempo whereas the knight is not and cannot but the knight can travel to every square on the board. In my opinion (and this could be my rating talking) they are effectively the same save for some endgame positions. Although the top players and engines prefer the bishop (and the bishop pair) generally. I think this is the case, so correct me if I’m wrong.

Hey Mercy! Thanks for the comment. This is true, and something I don't think about often enough- that bishops can only stay on their respective color complex, while the knight can freely jump around. This is a vague question, but how do you tell what color complex you control more of? And what does that tell you about the moves you should be playing?

@@chessamigo Yeah that is one of the benefits of the knight. Yes I agree with you and at most levels (including mine) I think they are both equal it is just at the much higher level. There is definitely someone better suited to answer this but it depends on your bishops, which ones you have and how well they are placed, as well as your pawns, if a lot of your pawns are on one colour square that colour complex will be stronger and the other weaker. That is how I generally determine that in my games although I also take into account the knights if it is a more specific area. Another thing I like to do if I trade off my bishop for a knight is put a lot of my pawns on that colour square so it can counteract the opponent's bishop of that colour. Again I am not a master so there are going to be better ways but that generally works for me.

@@mercyringhall6662 As a 1600, I and my opponents never trade bishops for knight until a clear win or a better position is forced or a trade is forced. The reason are: i) Knights usually can be cancelled by pawns. A knight on c3 has no prospects with a pawn on c6. The same, however cannot be said about a bishop, as it, however needs A LOT of pawns to cancel it, and even if that happens, a bishop is really kind of easy to play with when you mastered the movements of the knight and don't blunder a fork. ii) Mobility. A bishop has much more options in defending and creating tactics. iii) They both are objectively equal, but it might have had to do with psychology and personal experience of the best. Obviously, Engines support this claim, but they are 100% better and precise than humans to create those indefensible and minute details and tactics of that position.

I keep playing the Wally-bot (1800) even though it still kicks my a** every time. Losing is educational.

2:40 Couldn't you just step to e7? If bg5 then ng6 stops the check, the knight is defended by your king and the bishop on f7 no longer attacks the knight. The only line I can see is qxd8, kxd8, bxg6 and kd7 or be7 actually as i writing this it occured to me that white can sacrifice their bishop by bxg6, kxg6 and qxd8 and you still lose your queen this shows that you always have to look at everything, im guessing the engine would mark it as a brilliant hahah

Hey Alil, Thanks for the comment! I am getting so many helpful tips in the comments. When you say closed, do you mean in the sense that pawns are essentially blocking the center, i.e. bishops are kind of useless because they can't break past the pawns? And for open is it opposite, when bishops and really any piece can move freely across the board?

Thank you so much for this. Funny enough, my bishop was trapped about five minutes ago. Actually, it wasn't funny, I lost! It's diagonal was cut off by a pawn and was taken my opponent's king. I have not been trading my bishops for knights, I have been trying to do the opposite and I feel like in most cases, bishops have been better.

Bishops are better than knights in end games as 2 knights can’t force a mate, but 2 bishops can
