From Wikipedia:
The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (CBBT, officially the Lucius J. Kellam Jr. Bridge-Tunnel) is a 17.6-mile (28.3 km) bridge-tunnel that crosses the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay between Delmarva and Hampton Roads in the U.S. state of Virginia. It opened in 1964, replacing ferries that had operated since the 1930s. A major project to dualize its bridges was completed in 1999, and a similar project to dualize one of its tunnels is currently underway.
With 12 miles (19 km) of bridges and two one-mile-long (1.6 km) tunnels, the CBBT is one of only 12 bridge-tunnel systems in the world and one of three in Hampton Roads. It carries US 13, which saves motorists roughly 95 miles (153 km) and 1+1⁄2 hours on trips between Hampton Roads and the Delaware Valley compared with other routes through the Washington-Baltimore Metropolitan Area. As of January 2021, over 140 million vehicles have crossed the CBBT.[3]
The CBBT was built and is operated by the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel District, a political subdivision of the Commonwealth of Virginia governed by the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel Commission in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Transportation. Its construction was financed by toll revenue bonds, while operating and maintenance expenses are recovered through tolls. In 2002, a Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission (JLARC) study commissioned by the Virginia General Assembly concluded that "given the inability of the state to fund future capital requirements of the CBBT, the District and Commission should be retained to operate and maintain the Bridge-Tunnel as a toll facility in perpetuity".
The CBBT is often confused with the similarly named Chesapeake Bay Bridge, which crosses the Chesapeake Bay farther north in Maryland in Annapolis, near the United States Naval Academy.

Great video mate! The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel sure is a seriously impressive feat of engineering, especially considering it was built back in the 1960s. Definitely a road I want to experience for myself one day!

This is the most scenic bridge/tunnels I’ve been on. My husband and I have traveled this route many times. My family is from the Hampton Roads area. We’ve had the pleasure of seeing a military Hoover craft, submarine, pods of dolphins and many recreational fishing boats. We are always excited to what we will see on the next trip.

I see they're building a new tunnel at the Thimble Shoal Channel, which means they'll twin the other tunnel too. All that's needed to upgrade this to an interstate is provide up to date parapet safety walls and a full breakdown lane. I understand a new interstate will run from Hampton Roads to Raleigh NC called I-87. Upgrade this crossing and you could extend it via US-13 up to the I-87 Major Deegan Expressway in New York City so the route can run from Raleigh all the way to 🇨🇦🍁Canada🍁🇨🇦... 🤔

Good afternoon Mike!! Thank you so much for this great video as your videos keep getting better every time !!! Thank you so much for that ride on The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel and for the scenic breathtaking views too. I live 2 hours from the Chesapeake Bay bridge tunnel in Williamston NC . My mom has ridden on that bridge years ago with a friend of hers to Baltimore, Maryland. Especially loved watching your Outer Banks Drives as I live about the same distance from there as I do from that bridge. Will continue watching your videos and I appreciate the ones you’ve recently made in NC where I live and of Atlanta GA , where I was born and raised. Many thumbs up!! Oh there’s a new bridge in Rodanthe Called the Jug Handle Bridge and hope you’ll check it out soon. Take care and safe travels

At certain times that tunnel bridge is scary and at certain times expecially at night I have seen things that I have no way of explaining but this much I can tell you one stormy night drive on this bridge made me believe in Chessi the the Chessipeak Bay seamonster exists. I have seen waves so high that water has been on the bridge from the waves. But it's also one of my most favorite drives when I was driving semi trucks at times driving across this can scare the shit out of you and at other times it is very peaceful from the original Highway Prisoner 22 years of trucking.

I actually like driving across this bridge, the tunnels not so much, depending on traffic. Above the south tunnel is an observation area, a fishing pier, and a restaurant/bar/convenience and gift store (It's temporarily closed until sometime in 2023.) Not too far in on the northside of the bridge (just beyond the southbound toll booths) is another observation area. You can also u-turn just before you come to the toll booths if you want to travel the bridge in the opposite direction and don't want to pay another toll. The toll is expensive, so you don't want to miss that u-turn area. Both the observation area on the northern side and the pier/restaurant atop the south tunnel are accessible from both directions. How much is that toll now, somewhere around $15? Are they ever going to build the other two tunnels?

Nice video, as for someone from the UK, I'm not sure why this roadway needs more than 1 lane of traffic in each direction since the traffic seems oddly low for night/evening traffic... I'm also surprised that there isn't a single shared pedestrian and bicycle path on one side of the road...

Probably just for safety in case there’s an accident or someone’s car breaks down

Nobody in their right mind is walking 20 miles, I have to say it, and as for a bicycle path, it doesn’t appear to be possible to put one into that tunnel. It’s already kinda tight

@@wclifton968gameplaystutorials yeah it’s kinda insane. Not really thought of… but there’s longer. The Lake Ponchatrain (butchered to hell) Causeway is 25 miles (40 kilometers) long and takes nearly 30 minutes to cross with a speed limit of 65mph (105k/h)

I think toll roads are unconstitutional. First we are charged taxes to build the roads, then charged to use the road. It's double dipping at its finest.

The thumping over the sxpansion joints on this bridge is nothing compared to the thumping anywhere on the New York State Thruway.
