PTSD is a strange thing. My granddad was a very quiet man to the point of strangeness. He died when I was about 7 and my only memories of him are of his gnarly worn hands, smoking like a chimney and constantly doing things around the house - I don't remember him ever saying anything. Even my grandmother (who I knew better) joked about him being "the silent type". He was briefly hospitalised "for his nerves" when my mum was a child. Later we found out he was in some very close fighting in the battle of Kohima - neither my mother nor grandmother had a clue. I have a commemorative card from his funeral in which somebody had written "known by his deeds not his words". And I'm quite happy to have that small thing even if I never really knew him.

My great grandfather was mustered gassed during WWI. He was told never to drink alcohol. Grandma, said her dad was a sweet man until he would start drinking. It was something about the combination of alcohol and mustard gas that caused such a change in mood.

Obviously it’s a badge. 🙄 She meant what does it symbolise or stand for. Don’t know where this thing about Cheryl being a bit thick comes from, no she’s not MENSA or NASA smart, but she’s quite sharp and analytical for a woman frequently dismissed as a bimbo. Again, snobbery towards northerners and the working class. 🙄 Oldest one in the book.

Wow. A hard drinking, violent man with a sex drive that already netted him 9 living children, and a young housekeeper hired to watch the kids. This doesn't sound like a happy story, it sounds like a rapey story, and the fact that she never spoke of him later doesn't help.
