Cherokee Days 2016 - United Keetoowah Band History

Ernestine Berry, Director of the United Keetoowah Band John Hair Cultural Center and Museum, gives a talk on the history of the Cherokees with a focus on the Keetoowah Band and how they became a separate federally recognized tribe. Her talk begins with the origin story of the Cherokee and the original mound, or Mother Town, Kituwah, which is a different spelling of Keetoowah. She gives historic details about the turmoil resulting with interactions and intermarriage with the Europeans. Over time pressures from settlers and the US government and the Indian Removal Act and the Trail of Tears cause most Cherokees to move to settlements to the west in "Indian Country (Oklahoma/Arkansas)." The story continues with sides different Cherokee groups supported in the US Civil War. The Keetoowahs supported the Union. The struggles resulting from Oklahoma statehood and the Allotment period and Termination further complicated the Cherokee situation and the status of the Keetoowahs. In the Reorganization Period the Keetoowah band reorganized with federal recognition in 1950. The Cherokee Nation began its reorganization as a separate tribe in 1976. The different tribes' approach to tribal membership accounts for the different size and makeup of their nations. This talk was webcast and recorded in the Rasmuson Theater of the National Museum of the American Indian on June 11, 2016.

How amazing that I stumbled upon this video today. My avatar is my grandmother Monterey Green from Arkansas. This video is greatly appreciated because my whole lifetime I have been searching for this information about my family. If anyone knows anymore information regarding the Green or Crabtree family from north eastern Arkansas, we are Keetoowah. I would love the information

The Catawba were once your neighbors, even in Oklahoma. We have been forgotten since we were never federally recognized here in Oklahoma. On the White River in Arkansas, there was a Methodist Church in 1815, 3 years before Dwight Mission. My family helped found it. :). Some members of my family also were amongst the first "Dragoons" stationed at Ft Gibson, under "Beans Rangers" abt. 1832 -- year might be wrong, maybe 1830? What happened to the "Western Catawba" who came to "Indian Territory"? Vance Hawkins: What Happened to the Catawba and Associated Bands in “Indian Territory ? ps -- my family story says we started to sign up for Dawes, but 'something happened' so they never turned in their paperwork. I recognize yall as far more knowledgeable about many things, but missing are stories of some of your ancient-neighbors, which I have been researching.. Many on the rejected Cherokee rolls were mixed-bloods who can trace ancestry back to one or another of the Catawban bands. My DNA test said I am 90% Caucasian, 7% sub-sahara-African, and 3% Native American. 3% is 3/100 which is close to 3/96 which is 1/32. Not much, but it is there. Thank you for sharing your story on youtube.

I included a link to a blog entry but it didn't come out as a link to the blog. Sorry about that. I am 68 years old and would simply like for some people know what became of the Catawba in Oklahoma.

This is filled with false hood. The Arkansas Cherokee never referred to themselves as Keetoowah. The Arkansas Cherokee never agreed to the 1828 exchange of lands treaty in 1828.Additionally they made it clear to the U.S. government. We passed a law as a sovereign nation in 1825 that forbid any land sales or exchange of lands. Also, prior back in the east, the U.S.government ,in 1809, began suggestions to the authorities of the Cherokee Nation at the national council at Wills town and Turkey town to bring seriously consider migrating to Arkansas.Chiefs Pathkiller,Glass,Dick Justice,Toochalr,Hummingbird,Takatoka,Black fox Tohluntuskee ,the witch,Duck and others were the authorities of the sovereign Cherokee Nation, they migrated to Arkansas.John Ross Richard Taylor,Charles Hicks were not Chiefs!!! They were federal employees at the Highwasee Cherokee Agency. They were Interpreters and traders who also doubled as commissioners to the Cherokee National government. The authorities migrated under open terms but it never stipulated that Ross and co.could develope a government. This was done without consent. No pun intended to the UKB!! The point here is: the treaty of 1828 was never authorized by the sovereign Arkansas Cherokee. The Cherokee who decided to go into present Oklahoma did so anyway. They have a treaty, the treaty of 1833 that identifies them away from the Arkansas Cherokee and the Ross group- that is good enough- they don't have to contort this massive history.

No Us Keetoowahs are Treaty of July 8th 1817 My Card No. 066f Name: Gatewood (Gator) Quales. Our council house is at Norfork, always has been. Burial Grounds at Silymore at the bottom of Mountain Home on the White River. At least that is what I was told at a Pow Wow on the Council Grounds. I think John Ross is just another Confederate Creek.
