I played this song until I wore the tape out so I bought it on CD and I listened to it until I couldn’t get it to play anymore. I think it has been 20 years since I listened to this but I found myself belting out the lyrics as if I had never stopped listening to it!

What’s interesting about this song and video combined is that he seems like that guy who’s been through so many females and doesn’t have time to try again (hence his “unawareness” of her). She sure notices him which is to be expected of him (since he puts effort in attracting). The part that’s really interesting is the book “A primer of Jungian psychology” which explores the “hidden depths of the mind” and the ideas of the 8 types of personality. I almost feel like he left the book there on purpose to test her in seeing not only if she would return it (which he probably sensed she would do due to attraction), but to also see if she paid attention to what the book was about. If she returned it and didn’t say anything about the book, she’d be considered shallow (just “looking” for a man like him), However if she did talk about the book then he’d find personality in her.

Robert Ballentine Well, the video's definitely gendered. Passive-aggressive female waiting for the guy she noticed to notice her noticing him. Probably waiting with a list of nonsensical, purely fashionable red flags to check too. He fails one early, and she'll creepshame him for initiating and probably deny any interest on her part entirely. That's how shifting effort works to shift agency, creating hyper-agency for the male and hypo-agency for the female in mixed gender couples. Ironically, the song itself involves at least an ad prompt from the girl. Same result though since any guy's on the hook for the entire interaction if he responds.

neither am i, but the point of music is to experience the theme, never the literal words. this songs weaves a story that anyone can relate to, no matter who you are; and thats why music rules :) lyrics and titles are shouldnt be fixated upon literally, theyre just tools in a writers toolbox. 1999 fucking rocked btw, and chely wright is timeless!
