I’ve come to love watching Matt. His questions are so well phrased and foundational. “Are you comfortable describing your style?” “What’s your relationship like with the guitar?” They’re thoughtful and give people the space to reflect and constructively speak about the goods, bads, triumphs and challenges of making music.

People are really picking on her for having a simpler approach to the guitar, meanwhile they glorify guys like Kurt Cobain, Tony Iommi and many others for knowing how to be simple. I love both artists that I mentioned, but I just needed to show how sexist some people can be. Truly ashamed.

I saw Chelsea frontrow at a bar in Portland, OR in 2012, and she was playing a dark-brown woodgrain Jaguar-I'd never seen one like it before. I've been a fan ever since. While her performance was great, I remember it being clear that she was painfully uncomfortable onstage. It's a trip seeing her now in a Fender promo. I saw her live about a year ago for the first time since that 2012 show, and she commanded the stage with a lot more confidence. It's been very neat to see her evolve over the past five years.

The guitar playing on her latest album Hiss Spun is really innovative and challenging. Troy Van Leeuwen's guitar playing on Hiss Spun is particularly compelling. I've not heard this type of abstract guitar being playing since some of the music Robert Fripp and Adrian Belew did back in the 80's with David Bowie and other artists.

Not sure if this is the right setting for Chelsea. She's a solid player in the context of her music, but she's not a technical player. Chelsea's main bag is the whole of her music. Those riffs when isolated don't sound like much, but they're unbelievable when you add in her excellent rhythm section, synth, and voice. Her latest album is a masterpiece! Doomier players when isolated are never going to sound as good as straightforward player. What they have to offer is the complete unit of their sound.

michael aryn Yeah I saw her on the Wovenhand tour as well. It's taken her a bit to open up, but she commands the stage now. Carrion Flowers live was unbelievable. Once you get Chelsea, there's no turning back lol. She has something in catalog for everyone. Women like her, Annie Clark, Wata, Zola Jesus, and Eivor should be getting the push in mainstream. Women that do their own thing, and are inspiring intellectually. Anyone that doubts Chelsea from this video alone would do well to listen to the albums.

She's certainly not someone to have here if the goal is to show off intricate guitar licks, but maybe that's the point. Her music is based on very skeletal and repetitive guitar riffs. She's not someone who dazzles in this kind of forum, but it's nice to see Fender giving her this exposure.

  • @funeralopolis1

I am as well, Chelsea is a word of mouth musician that doesn't get a lot of mainstream publicity. I was just sort of irritated with some of the comments not getting why she's there. Someone who hasn't heard her music wouldn't get it. Chelsea is like Buzz from Melvins. They give no shits about technical prowess. Their primary concern is what the song is going for.

Fuck, am I alone in saying she reminds me of Kurt Cobain. The style, simplicity but melodic dark tone. Haunting and the talent she possesses is waiting to found. When people understand the complexity and layering of her music, having to listen to it around 3 or 4 times to truly grasp the songs, people who like bans like guns an roses for example, will drop their inhibitions of good rock music being fast and technical all the time and see that another form of the quality found in genres is from layering and different areas of clef, filled in by simple yet effective unique sounds. If the guitar snobs can do this, whether they’re patient enough to listen to them more than once, will realise what they’ve missed out on. Technical is not always better.

Jazzmaster in my opinion is the best Fender Looks hot as hell, and when you put some naughty P90s in them Oh boy... But also still retains its original good look, sometimes a humbucker or p90 in a strat doesn't look at that good, unless it's a zebra one with black pick guard, it's not as noticeable and ugly But yeah, love Jazzmasters, and combined only with distortion and Friedman amps To me it's like Fenders equivalent of Gibsons les Paul, though I don't like gibson, it's a good simile Because you can go the normal trem it has or a Tele bridge like how Elliot guitars does And looks great and sounds great with humbuckers, What do you other viewers think?

Interesting. As someone who is always struggling to absorb and comprehend theory and play ever more complicated rhythm and lead parts, it's weird to see someone with such a stripped down and bare approach to the guitar. And I don't mean in a bad way - she has her own style, which is what playing guitar is all about. That said, I wonder if she is more suited to play bass? The way she plays and talks about how she writes music makes me think she'd be a much better bass player. Anyway, interesting interview.

I was thinking the same thing. I hate to say this because I know the mass wave of hate I'm about to inspire but I don't think shed be half as famous as she is if she wasn't an attractive white female. Don't get me wrong she's a great musician and I love her writing, but I know half a dozen people that do this exact type of music and do it really well but are nowhere near being discovered just because they aren't popular or attractive.

"totally" to silverslither8. Pedal Files makes a good point and I've been witness to a lot of that bias as well. However, Chelsea is a great writer and that is what makes her stand out. Listen to her music. She has a great voice with perfect pitch. Maybe that's why she likes her guitar to be so off kilter, to offset the great singing, tight drumming, and sequenced keyboard parts. I think she's a gothic P.J.Harvey, in terms of guitar playing, and I love it.

  • @JosefK93

    @JosefK93

Well she's not a "guitar player" or "bass player" in a band really, she is the leader of a solo project which relies heavily on atmosphere and her vocals. Whether she plays bass or guitar is not really going to make a huge difference to the sound of her band as far as I can see, but I think it's way easier for her to write songs on guitar than bass, it's easier to just strum a few chords or come up with a riff (sure, you can do the riff on the bass as well, Sabbath style, but you get my point).

wild nature Guitar is just a small part in her music. These simple riffs with an atmospheric tone sounds great as a whole composition with her vocals and electronic stuff. She never meant to be an amazing technical guitarist.

Move on to a different ,and safer style of music my friend. There is enough of that out there. Some folks, myself included, like to hear music that that is not conventional.Simple as that.

I actually have very eclectic taste in music. However I do prefer to listen to artists who have actually taken the time to learn how to play their instrument. I do listen to "doom and gloom" music at times, but this is just plain bad. I'm a big fan of Fender guitars but I'm shocked that they would feature such an amateur guitarist to promote one of their guitars. Simple as that.

And one of your songs is in a new Jaguar(car) commercial? Like her? Roland? -N-Terain?Are you on tour constantly? Like her? Hmmm.... didn't think so. Good luck with that closed minded attitude.

Ok, so you copied and pasted your comment from below. Very creative. If you were a musician or played an instrument you would understand how horrible her playing is. If commercials are hiring her they are truly desperate. And Fender must be desperate as well. She plays like a stoned 10 yr old kid who just picked up their first guitar and is trying to annoy the neighbors. I'll clue you in, if you see somebody playing an entire song using just their middle finger, and it sounds more like a tuning session than a song, it means that they suck at the guitar. It's scary that the bar for music has been set so low that people actually think she is talented. I read a comment below where someone compared her to Black Sabbath. Wow...i'ts painfully obvious that they have never listened to Black Sabbath.

Wow! This is like watching a noob picking up the guitar for the first time at a music store. However, I'll take this than listening to those stupid mainstream electronic musicians out there. At least this is organic/acoustic sounding so kudos to you, Chelsea!

Hey...Just listen to this shit! A fucking 6 yr old could play this with 15 minutes instruction! For Fender to post this crap when there are THOUSANDS of unknown brilliant guitarists playing their product with no recognition is an insult!!!
