The premiere episode of KCET’s new music show Studio A features Los Angeles-based musician Chelsea Wolfe, whose hypnotically entrancing vocals, layered guitar textures, and pulsing rhythms earned her critical accolades for her album “Pain is Beauty.”
The music of Chelsea Wolfe is a dark cloud and a silver lining; it churns with thunderous storms of distortion that dissolve into beautiful, introspective interludes warmed by the light of her ethereal vocals. Her latest album "Pain is Beauty" surges with contradictions, creating a sound and a message that is melancholy and hopeful at the same time. These hypnotically entrancing tracks seem to be an all-consuming fall-out emitted from the collision of opposites that Wolfe so deftly creates. She counterbalances droning aural layers with her arching voice, which crests above the lurching waves broadcast by the rhythm section, helmed by her co-producer, multi-instrumentalist Ben Chisholm, and supported by the rumbling drums Dylan Fujioka and searing sonic textures of guitarist Kevin Dockter.
The Los Angeles-based musician recently brought her atmospheric brand of rock to the KCET studios for a special Artbound session for a dedicated group of fans, some of whom had traveled from as far as San Diego to see her perform.
