    A Barry sized bowl is probably how most people would measure their food. Suggested portion sizes on packaging are usually there to make it seem like there hardly are any calories / sugars / fats in the food.

    That said, getting the protein serving that I usually buy protein powder for from a large (double) serving of good tasting cereal might not be a bad thing. 13g of protein to 36g of anything is really standout high, could see myself grabbing a bowl of that after a workout. Just to spice up the monotony of that protein shake.

    @@hippie_4762 that's legitimately why I have a subscription. After my morning workouts I do a double size portion that fills me up all morning, and breaks up the monotony of my high protein diet. I don't eat it every morning, and vary it with smoothies and things, but anything to add to a rotation and shake things up is really nice. Especially with how few calories are in a double portion.

    So a fun fact about the astronaut ice cream, it never actually went up into space due to it being so crumbly, all of the little pieces would make an incredible mess and thus it isn't something that Nasa would ever send up into space. The whole idea of it was started as a gimmick and has really gone out of control, claiming to be space food, but none of it really is.

    Every time Adam Ragusa sings the praises of Magic Spoon (ads of course, but he claims he really likes it) I wonder if it really tastes as good as he says. But then I saw a different YTer taste it (not a paid sponsor) and he was nauseated. Not a complaint exactly, but the reason Jude's icecream seems such a reasonable price for the same size tub as other premium brands is it's more "whipped". 460ml of vanilla Jude's only weighs 275gm, whereas 460ml of vanilla Haagen Dazs is 400gm. And if you like it enough and get the subscription it's only $5 a box instead of $10. A pack of four lasts me a month and adds variety to a low cal, high protein diet. Definitely not worth the money to some, but if you don't eat cereal daily, and especially if you have a sweet tooth and don't just like savory or bland flavors, it's about the same cost as any healthy cereal but with more protein and less sugar. A lot of work is done at food manufacturing sites to ensure foods that pass through their businesses adhere to and /or maintain the authenticity claims listed on the products they pack. Organic foods are traceable back to the farms where the raw materials are sourced. products bought from supermarkets will need to complete at least 3 audits a year to sell these products within the supermarket with the authenticity claim "organic"being challenged every time. BRCGS audit, Supermarkets retailer audit and organic audit.

I have a huge food thermos and every morning heat water pick lunch and dump in the thermos and set off on hike -by lunch hot usually very tasty food. I feel as though the idea of a processing score is a bit reductive, it is true that some processed foods are less good for us and the environment, but conversely, processing food is something that makes many staple foods available and safe to eat, such as milk, grains, meat, stuff like that, processing can be bad but it can also be very good, as it opens up a wider diet in a way that, when done right, is safer than the alternative of consuming an unprocessed alternative, (such as unpasteurized milk, for instance, pasteurization is a mechanical processing of milk to kill pathogens and make it safe to consume) the ecological impact is much more clear cut, the less food travels to arrive on our table, the better, dunno, just kinda irked by the insinuation in the app that more processing is automatically bad, it's the green to red scale they have i think, it's not a big deal in the grand scheme

    For sure. Processing food is a lot like say, genetic modification. You can't just blanket score something as bad for being a GMO food, because sometimes genetic modification is actually a beneficial thing. There's a whole sector of GMO research dedicated to making crops that can survive in more extreme environments, and that will yield bigger harvests while needing less resources to grow. Just imagine the impact that could have in areas where not much grows. World hunger would decrease because of that! And by having more produce options in these less fertile areas, it would decrease people's reliance on animal agriculture (which isn't actually a crazy super polluter like people think. Iirc globally it accounts for like 10% of emissions) and make it harder for bad actors to exploit these food insecure places.

    Pretty sure a lot of the stuff on the app comes from the box themselves. There is a lot of marketing going on the labels, but there is also a lot of stuff they are forced to add by law, like the nutritional values per 100g(or ml), which are the best way to compare two similar products. Sadly in the UK the weight doesn't seem to be mandatory, as it isn't the address of the factory producing the product (two things which would be really useful in identifying good or bad products or comparing the nutritional values of a part of the box)

  • @Ellyerre

    @Ellyerre

    Exactly, and in the EU it's mandatory to label the origin of some products (although sometimes it's just EU or non-EU) as well as if it's bio/organic farming, which I'm sure that's a big part of how they calculate the "eco-score". And I'm sure many products sold in the UK are also sold in the EU, like that exact almond milk, so all that information is available. And many countries have their own nutritional scores, although they vary wildly and I don't find them particularly useful or easy to use.

    First off I’d like to say I’m a big fan of the show I have been following along for probably two years now! However I feel like the stance taken towards the diary and beef industry isn’t a fair judgement. As a cattle producer in the U.S. i have worked in every aspect of the beef industry even studying Animal Science in college. I understand that your show is based in London but id I like to throw out some U.S numbers because it’s what I know. Per the 2016 US epa study shows that the cattle industry (including dairies) only made up 2% percent of emissions, while transportation made up 28.5%, electricity making up 28.4% and even Ag crops making 4.7%. Now I understand globally livestock make up 14.5% of emissions which don’t get me wrong it is something In the agriculture world that we should all work on, however 80% of that number come from developing countries that have not quite become as efficient as bigger countries such as the U.S and say Japan. There is a long way to go and we can all do our part and I really love the idea of the carbon negative ice cream, I think it’s amazing that they have accomplished such a feat. But I don’t think we should attack or stand against certain livestock producers when there is a bigger elephant in the room on emissions standards! I will continue to watch your show but I would love to see some episodes on beef production. If you are interested in Beef and it’s carbon footprints Dr. Frank Mitloehner has some amazing insight on this kind of stuff! Thanks for your time.

    Global livestock emissions being at 14.5% is definitely something to work on, and I've heard of ways they're doing it (certain foods making cows less gassy is one I've seen), but I feel like it's unfair that so much scrutiny is placed on animal agriculture. Globally, what I worry most about are things like transportation and industry (think all the factories we as westerners have shipped off to places like India, China, or Bangladesh). Not to mention, it's something like...a dozen or so companies that create the bulk of the world's pollution, ranging from emissions to chemical waste to landfills, and the ocean's plastic nightmare. I also feel like a lot of this stuff that gets thrown around (eat less meat! take shorter, cold showers! carpool or ride bikes!) is just a way to try and put the responsibility of change onto the individual person, instead of going after these huge companies that are doing most of the damage. After all, it's easier to blame the world's issues on cow farts and Sunday roast dinners than to actually start doing what needs done to stop us from going extinct.

That being said, as a diabetic, I have tried the Magic Spoon cereal and would not buy it again until the price is reduced by a huge margin. It is nearly 5 times the cost of regular cereal, though to be fair, so are nearly all of the "keto" cereals.

    If magic spoon would add more vitamins and minerals to it I might consider buying it with the added expense. All it really as going for it it the net carbs, protein, and no sugar. Otherwise it it in some cases less healthy then some of the cereals with sugar. Especially when you are replacing something that has more nutritional value just to eat expensive cereal.

    The cereal was very interesting to me. If they indeed have more protein than regular cereal, that would make a portion (regular or Barry sized) more filling, so while they are considerably more expensive, one box would last longer. So perhaps in the end the value for money (and flavour) is not too far off.

    I really wish that Magic Spoon cereal was cheaper. I love cereal and every single person I've seen talk about Magic Spoon seems to love it (even when they're not being paid to love it). $10+ a box is way outside of my price range, though; I can get my seasonal Halloween Monster cereals for 3/$5 and so that's usually what I have as a "treat", even though it's crap sugar with no protein.
