It's to inflate his ego, guys like him tend to go out with girls that are less attractive because he is scared that if he went out with someone more attractive that they would see through the very shallow veneer very quickly. That's why they tend to struggle to settle down because the girls soon get bored and the shallowness becomes clear. Strangely it's they have low self esteem and it's all a front.

Abz my guy I would be walking away already. I don't give girls like that a chance. You attract what you accept to let into your life more often.
