--------
Comedy duo Cheech and Chong started their career in the black nightclub circuit of L.A., which strongly influenced their humor. They often performed at clubs, including the Troubadour, a popular venue for artists looking to secure record contracts. The duo spoke about their strong connection to the black community and how it formed their initial core audience. An encounter with Lou Adler, one of the world's biggest record producers, led to their first album deal for $1,000 each. Their comedy albums, unlike many traditional acts which were recorded live, featured studio bits which let them experiment more with sound effects and other voices. The famous “Dave’s Not Here” skit on their first record came about spontaneously during a rehearsal. After a successful first album, their popularity grew, with “Dave’s Not Here” becoming exceptionally favored amongst DJs.

As a kid I found a copy of their Big Bambu album at a thrift store, not sealed but it does still have the rolling paper. Hoping it might be worth something one day lol if not I got a giant vintage rolling paper to roll up with

It’s the best thing when you’re young. You say 80s/90s cuz of your age. For me it was the late 2000s, early 2010s. For others it’s the late 2020s, etc. I might not be young but at least I don’t have that boomer mindset like you lol.

l was in a crazy huge band in Dallas Tx in the 80s named 'Stadenko's Barber' for a brief period. Extreme instrumental beck/Zappa type stuff. Lots of local players went thru that band that went on to greatness. Best band name ever tho.

I love this man! Great great interview, glad to hear the whole story, he’s always been very interesting and I heard he got in touch with Chong through something where they work together in Chong’s club. But they never fully talked about it I think. It’s crazy everything that went on and these 2 legends now just work together and creat a genre. They are very important for history, like there stuff or not it’s just amazing.

Age is weird. But I'm thankful. I'm old enough to have seen every Cheech & Chong movie in theaters, but too young to have known about the their records at that time-we would just sneak listening to Richard Pryor records. I did here the Dave bit on Dr. Demento, but didn't even KNOW it was them for years. But C & C put ALLL their friends in their movies, that's where I first saw Pee Wee Herman. And I think it's where I first saw Chong's daughter Rae Dawn too.

@@ri067953 I know Ri0, but things change. People get old. Paul McCartney isn't with the Beatles anymore, the Rolling Stones of today are not the Stones of 1974, the Ford Mustang today isn't the one from 1967. And I'm not even the cool guy I was when I used to skate and do ollies up and down Venice Beach in 1999. Even if I put on those clothes, I'd look CRAZY!! So, watch the old movies, listen to the old cd's, watch them do interviews today. The good news is that they're STILL ALIVE bro, they survived--and Tommy got out of jail. It's all good.

Ok so quick story,i started smoking weed when i was 13 back in 1997,i hung out with older dudes that smoked cause i was mature for my age, blah blah blah, anyway my name is David and Everytime i would go to my friends house they'd ask who's there when i knocked,so I'd say David, and every single FN time they would answer with "Dave's not here" they would do it for like 10 to 15 minutes and when i would finally get inside they would always be dying of laughter 😂😂😂 one day they played me the record and i finally found out where it came from, one of the best skits of all time

I saw their first movie in Santa Ana California when I was a teenager . I was 16 , I got my drivers license on my 16th birthday in 1978 , and purchased my first car the following week . I took my best friend Mick 🤪 We smoked some Thai weed when there was Thai Sticks . We must of laughed more than necessary all through “Up in Smoke”. Oh well I was 16 going to high school, had a job after school , had a girlfriend who became a long term thing . Like Cheech said “ Oh to be Young “ Good times and still going !
