For those saying that 77k is too much...how much does 2 300's cost? Isnt the MSRP on those 37k each? I would think that the cost is a wash for those quad 300 applications when you can just install and maintain only 2 engines instead of 4. Maybe even cheaper at the end of the day.... I can afford one of these. Two is marginal. A boat AND two of these, I can do it BUT I'd have to live on it, use it sparingly, never retire and do my own maintenance and keep it anchored out in the ocean for free storage. That said it is doable.

Thats made form 2 3.2l optimax v6's welded together not sure. that should give 660hp and 700 ft-lbs torque, and this v12 is a N/A engine and makes 600hp witch is about what the the optimax makes per CID. now CRT (Caldwell racing) make the 2.5, 3.5 and 4.0, they are billet aluminum thingy with conduct heat well. The 2.5L will do 450'ish hp in racing and is common as dirt. My question is how does the middle of the engine where all the exhaust port holes are aimed not distort form the heat? the 7075 aluminum must conduct all the heat away as its got lots of zinc, some mg and some Cu in it.

How about some civilized conversation? A 450r runs ~$55k and they seem to sell fairly well at only 50 hp more than a 400, which costs much less. The great thing about a free market economy. If you don’t think it is a value, don’t but it. Also doesn’t seem to make sense to price a 300 hp outboard compared to a 400hp outboard so it doesn’t seem logical to compare a 400 hp to a 600hp. yeah the 2.5l can got 450 hp, CRT makes 2.5L, 3.5L and 4.0L with latter going to over 650 hp. So 2 4l CRT's mounted together makes a 8L 2 stroke v12. somehow the block and cranks are mounted or welded together. the most modular 2 stroke ever is detroit diesel as the v6 and v8 blocks can be mounted together along with the crankshafts couple together, ie 2 8v92 make a 16v92, i got a silver 8v92 out back and a omc small block 4L v8 johnson side oiler v8. Now since the merc's ans CRT v6's 2 stroke are 60 deg block a mini napier deltic like OP 2 stroke could be formed from 3 v6 billet Al blocks! A 3.2 stroke 300sx in 3160cc and 3 of the could for a 9,480 9.48L mini deltic 2 stroke OP engine with custom ductile iron uni-flow ported liners! this 2 stroke would look like hell hanging off the transom but would gine around 990 hp a piece (330hp * 3). the sound would be insane!

Development, manufacturing, facilities, and unforseen cost overruns are all an investment that will be, must be actually recovered or Mercury won't be with us long. Now 600 hp in a marine operating environment, in outboard configuration. Naturally aspirated power plant, understressed for reliability at sea. Those who do venture into tweaking camshaft profiles head work, tunes even supercharging is inevitable surely Mercury Marine designed this Power plant for different levels of performance.... But reliability is everything or this is a failed project. The engines cost should fall as time goes on. But will never be inexpensive. Into automobile pricing for comparison 77k for 600 merc. Entire drive train and steering function. Big Blocks from any of the Big 3 would need to be built to the hilt and at higher engine stresses. $25,000 then your trans 6k +, drive line, rear end all the way to back tires. Then throw in the steering system of the car......you are kissing $50,000. If unfortunately you experience mechanical failure in a car or truck..... you can call or walk for help. While failures at sea pose a different set of problems. The consumer purchasing a craft large enough to support for just one of these outboards won't be put off by price.

But this motor is definitely made for the super rich and not the average Joe, so they're gonna need to sell a few in order to see a return on investment. Sadly, we live in a world where government regulation is changing what is acceptable when it comes to burning old dinosaurs, so this motor, as innovative as it is, may not have the longevity that Mercury was hoping for when they began designing it. I'm not sayin' that ICE's are going away, but I think manufacturers will eventually be forced to consider electric motors for marine applications as the EPA tightens its noose on the marine industry. I hope Mercury is thinking about that possibility as well.

DO NOT BUY A MERCURY OUTBORD MOTOR!!!!!!!! THEY COST LESS UP FRONT BUT THEN YOU TAKE IT IN THE ASS FOR THE REST OF THE TIME YOU OWN IT. Do you think there might be a reason why the United States Coast Guard, Vessel Assist and Tow Boat USA almost exclusively use Honda and Yamaha engines????? It sure as hell isn't because those brands are cheaper. It's because when you buy a marine engine you want it to work. Mercury dropped the ball a long time ago on: RELIABILITY RELIABILITY RELIABILITY WARRANTY SERVICE I've been in the business for 30 years and Mercury makes garbage outboard engines and their customer service is also garbage. The information is out there if you want it. Almost no one uses these engines commercially and if they do they QUICKLY regret it. Try finding one overseas, oh that's right, you won't except in the odd case. Everyone uses Japanese outboards. Mercury gimmicks won't fix the horrible reputation they have earned.
