My Great Aunt was very fast with a hook and a needle. She was blind. Hand-eye is not necessarily what you need for this skill. The sensitivity in your fingers tells you the tension in the string, the size of the stick, the tightness of the stitch, the space between stitches. Your fingers count them because if you had to rely on your eyes you would be lost. I spoke of my Aunt, My Mother crocheted a wedding dress for my sister that weighed around fifty pounds. It was a double skirt. Three people in our family have worn it now. They say it is incredibly heavy, it is made from the material she used for doilies, and table spreads. I honestly don't remember my mother looking at her stitches unless she made a mistake.

I began crochet in about the 5th grade, having learned from my grandmother. I remember some teasing about it since I was a guy doing what some considered a girly activity. The teasing didn't bother me much and wasn't widespread. Little did these folks know that I could handle wrenches, hammers and saws equally well. Thankfully we have begun to arrive at a place where skills are more appreciated for the skill and craftsmanship rather than associated with whether someone is male or female. Today we find and accept craftspeople with very diverse skills regardless of gender.

Wow, he crochets fast!! I taught myself to knit through KZread videos. I was in a dark place in my life and needed something good to focus on so I chose to try knitting. It got me through my dark time and 10 years later I'm still knitting. It went from being something to keep my mind from negative thoughts, to something that has brought me joy for 10 years.

That crocheting is actually a really good foundation for a surgeon, I hope he achieves his goal

I first seen him in Instagram earlier this year and I was blown away at just how talented Jonah really Is. He doesn't even look down at his patterns. It's like they are embedded into his head. It kind of reminds me of a blind person reading braille. It's so amazing how the mind and the hands work together as eyes. 😍 The fact that he still wants to pursue his career in the health field and be a surgeon is even more amazing as he is living his calling now. Jonah if you ever read this you are truly one in a million and such an inspiration to all! God bless you and your family and your family in Ethiopia!❤️❤️❤️

My grandmother taught me to crochet when I was 9, and it took me until I was in my early 20s to “get it”. Now I’m 32 and I’m at an advanced skill level, but that’s after 23 years of trying. The fact that he’s this fast and precise after a short amount of time is astonishing. I wonder what he would do if he learned to knit as well lol

My great aunt tried to teach me when I was a kid but I couldn’t get the hang of it back then. I finally figured out one stitch in college and now do single crochet (mid 30s). I’m still a beginner though, along with knitting, as I don’t get around to doing them much. With trying to learn as a kid, for me I think I tried learning it left-handed as I write and do some things lefty. Turns out, crochet is one of the things I do righty.

It clicked for me with the math being mentioned. Jonah must have a very visual mind to envision which stitches in which order/placement will create which effects and shapes.

I’m 15 and just learnt to crochet a year ago and now that I think of it, Jonah was such a huge inspiration. I can remember throwing my crochet hooks across the room and throwing a tantrum because of how frustrating it was but once I got the hang of it, crochet was the most calming thing I’d ever done. I’m also working towards becoming a surgeon in the future and i hope Jonah will also achieve all his future goals! :D
