Sam, the advice you gave me to fix my sundown 6k was absolutely spot on. I did this same fix and that amplifier has been running strong at .5 ohm for over a month now. This is a reliable fix for sure and I'm glad you found it! Thankyou!

Thank you for sharing this. It seems like it would be a good idea to swap them out every time you have the board out, even if you're not having the problem. You could probably also replace them with resistors that are 1/2 or 1/4 of the value and keep a stock look.

  • @Agent24Electronics

Thanks for the great video! I wonder if there's another way to solve this issue? I see that the IRS21844 has a shutdown feature on Pin 2 (active low). My guess is that some timing circuit is taking the chip out of shutdown too early. Perhaps you can change a value of resistor or capacitor to ensure the chip stays in shutdown longer until the PWM generator comes up. I don't know the schematic of these things so that might not be possible, but if so, it should be a more reliable way to solve the issue. Increasing current to the other circuit might work but then you loose those fuse resistors and are liable to get more damage if those regulators etc go shorted at some point. Also, I think that with component tolerance and age drift, there's no guarantee that the PWM generator power supply would always be "fast" enough in every case, even after bypassing the resistors. Would be interesting to see if you find anything useful from this angle.

Most half bridge MOSFET driver chips are incapable of turning the low side and high side on at the same time. A glitch like that shouldn't do any more than cause that audible start up thump in the speaker, because it would turn on one MOSFET for a few microseconds, leaving the other one off. The only way I could imagine a "shoot through", the technical term for simultaneous conduction of both transistors, would be if the high side and the low side are driven from different driver chips, and both chips being "ON" at the same time, because of a phase inverting glitch. Do these driver chips have independent inputs for the high side and the low side? If so, very rare. I would use drivers with a single input from the PWM.

The issue presented here is not that, though. If you probe the +5 and -5 VCC voltages going into the driver board for the opamps generating PWM, you can see voltage drop as they build, about half way up, which delays the opamps activating. in the mean time the +12v vcc for the drive ICs is already present. The exact issue is actually that the +5v has more voltage drop due to other devices on the board making use of it and less of the -5v. This causes the opamps to receive -5v VCC a fraction of a second before +5v VCC and a tiny bump of negative current is sent down the PWM output into the drive ICs, which are active, and relay that to the fets. An audible "snap" is heard from the output section and a big spike on the fet outputs, and the rail voltage dips down, showing current has been drawn by the output fets as a whole. Repeat this many times and the fets heat up, showing they are under stress from this incident. Keep repeating it still, and the fets will explode. I have this scenario captured on video exactly as I state, in one of my livestreams on a sundown 6K. You can see and hear the stress the glitch causes to the output fets, and then suddenly BANG in my face. Jumping over the limiting resistors completely cleared up the problem and the amp has been running for a good year or so daily. Other techs I have spoken to have experienced the same and confirmed the fix resolves. :)

What you say about the resistors on the regulators Vin makes sense. However, I think that these resistors serve as a kind of circuit protection for overcurrent. They function as the weakest component in the circuit. Isn't it a better idea to replace these resistors with a slow blow through hole fuse instead?

I've come across voltage regulator circuits like that in other things. Sometimes those resistors are put in series with the regulator if there's a huge differential in input versus output voltage possibly as an attempt to reduce heat generation because the voltage regulators are linear operation. Other times I've seen them used if there is massive amounts of stabilizing capacitance on the output and there needs to be current limiting so the initial Cap. charge current doesn't exceed the capability of the regulator. I don't believe either is the case in that particular regulation circuit and you're 100% correct. They don't really need to be there. Thanks for the tip! :)
