Cheapest RED Cinema Camera Vs Red Komodo X in 2024

So since that Video about my old Red Camera was quite popular and a friend just bought a Komodo X let's see how well a Red Epic X from 2011 can hold up to a Komodo X from 2023.
This is a more theoretical Comparison without a lot of side by side footage but should hopefully still be interesting.

EPIC X - very cinematic image, beautilfull, has texture, glossy, organic, depth Komodo x - sharp and graceless, looks like a video camera, a high price sony mirrorless

I don’t think it’s quite as bad as a Sony haha but I know what you mean. They did go back in the right direction with the Komodo X though, quite a bit better than the Komodo in respect to that

Totally agree! Had two old Red Epic then switched to Arri and now I’m struggling to find a camera that delivers the same look out of the box, every sensor feels somehow very digital

Even RED itself is going to have a hard time surpassing the overall desire and reputation of a Dragon sensor, which I believe is the same sensor in the DSMC2, just with more processing power and other enhancements. Sure, the KX is great and lightweight, which can make a big difference compared to the DSMC1/2. It also has some of the most modern and latest features, like app control and all that, but the Dragon still has 16+ stops of dynamic range, great color science, and the most important feature the one that sets you apart from a professional cinematographer and a mediocre one is the RED logo on the DSMC series 😂 cheers

Yeah honestly the biggest thing is probably weight and size. Although I have to say I like a bit of weight for handheld shooting 😅

one thing you missed in this video is to notice how much smoother, reach and natural (film-like) the MX sensor is. red one and epic (same sensor) still are the best look achieved from red.

Yeah definitely a point if you just straight up convert it in perfect lighting conditions otherwise I think the flexibility of the newer sensors is more useful

Finally someone making a comparison between those 2 generations of cameras, Thank you.. While KX has more informations in the shadows, Epic-x highlights are "fuller" (hair and neck of the subject), i feel like k-x needs to be stopped down 2/3 or a stop to match the exposure of the epic. Can you please make a longer comparison? Both cameras in "IPP2" and both in "legacy mode" also? To see the difference of those sensors under the same "color space / gamma".. Also, R3D stills of this comparison would be extremely generous of you, as a dsm1 owner, i would like to know if Komodo-x can match the organic feel of MX sensor by tweaking some parameters.. Thank you again!

Hi, comparing the image itself between the two is definitely something I can look into might take a vitamin until a Video like that is coming though :) Just fyi. the clips in here were also with both of them in IPP2, I’ll add a link to the description with the download for the R3D of the couch shot for both cameras as soon as I can

Just a sidenote to that footage: I used a cheap ass lens + a 1/4 diffusion filter on the KX so we should probably do a test with better comparability. 😂

I can say I was on a set through last june and july and we used a Scarlet-W as A cam and Komodo as B cam. The DP (who is also the colorist) said the Komodo was a nightmare compared to the organic pictures of the Dragon sensor in the Scarlet. "Nightmare" might be overkill but I agree on the fact that the Komodo is definitely more "plasticky" than any body with a Dragon sensor in it.

  • @crappyfish1235

KX in my experience is definately more akin to dragon latitude and image quality rather then mx, about the same underexposure latitude with dragon edging out the overexposure by 2/3 stops. Still very impressive for a global shutter sensor, and it has next to 0 FPN. It is one stop more sensitive to light tho, as dragon and mx and m sensor all rates 1 stop lower then the number would actually indicate. MX seems like a very fun and interesting sensor though, would love to own one one day.

  • @gregtockner

    @gregtockner

Mx is still really good looking but yeah Dragon would definitely hold up better in comparison. It would actually edge out the KX? That’s interesting, I mean I know that Global shutters tend to have less Latitude but I guess I was just thinking that in 10 years between the sensors they would’ve been able to compensate for that but you might have just sent me down a rabbit hole of looking into that haha

  • @crappyfish1235

@@gregtockner yes 10 years in sensor tech should have made up for the difference in performance, but you look at the sony f55's global shutter sensor from 2011 vs the komodo, it actually still performs better in terms of sensitivity and latitude vs the komodo og. Also the dragon sensor with the lowlight optimized OLPF has even more usable latitude then the alexa, so it's honestly the best sensor next to the v raptor x that red ever made.
