you could go down even to a 160-200 grit for the clear removal, maybe even down to 120 grit. And for home paint jobs, using low pressure air (40-60 psi) you can blow off the car in between coats to help minimize the dust trapped on the surface to cut down on the cut and buff at the end

That’s pretty aggressive, you’d have to come back up to 400 (ideally more like 800) unless you want sand scratches all throughout your clear. The risk of going through the exposed paint would be way too high if all you want to do is just re-clear

Thank you! I have a 2005 Acura which is in pretty good shape except the clearcoat and I don't want to pour a lot of time or work into it because with 215K miles and at almost 20 years old I don't plan on keeping it much longer so a fix like this is good to make it look good for the rest of its realistic life (the interior has irreversible damage like cracked dash and perforated seats that are tearing between perforations)

  • @mustang.

Have a 2007 Camry and trust me. My interior was worse than you could imagine happen aftwr what monstrosity you already described. Google Toyota cheap interior issue on 2007-2010 Camry and Lexus if you want to know. The dashboard would melt and stick to your hands. I got it fixed by going to one of those car seat and upholstery shops, they put a faux leather same color as my dashboard and now my dash looks brand new. The upholstery all over the car got changed as well and it looks brand new. Now was thinking to get the car poloshed but wanted to paint clear coat, which the paint shop duped me out of by claiming he will do it all, but did a bad job of polishing ( no wet sanding, just polished portions of the car and then shampooed and slightly waxed)

The reason people dont do this is that the clear and base a bonded together when sprayed. Doing this means that the weak point is the base. Sure it works and it should last a while, but how long it lasts will be how good the bas coat is that you sprayed it to. Ive debated doing this because all my vehicles have this problem. But eventually ill just respray the whole thing in a single stage paint with some hardener from tractor supply for $100. Car paint is insanely priced now adays. From the prep to labor to the actual paint cost. Ill go with a tractor paint lol.

i’m gonna use black car paint on mine today and see how that goes. it obviously won’t be as nice but the clear coat is so bad that i don’t have the time to sand it all off

Definitely told this the right way. I usually use 91% alcohol mixed 50/50 with distilled water to wipe everything off. It's easier on the tape of you are taping things off. Also can make the stickie part of cheaper tapes stick to your trim aka make you $@$$_#_$ like a mofo getting that 💩 off 😂

Well the prep not well done because this clear fly really quick and it will stick to everything and you just wrap only around the areas which got clear but you forgot the rest of the car and the mineral spirits is oily so I think there is a lot missing here by the way I am no expert on paint but I do work a lot on shops

There about 24 bucks on Amazon. It's literally the best clear coat in a spray can.
