    I finished my high school graduation project two months ago. The purpose of it was to make a racing fuel by myself. My teacher knew someone who works at Shell, and next thing I know I'm working together with Shell on this project. I ended up using MTBE too, which was very expensive to get, and after I calculated the perfect amount of additive MTBE needed for my fuels, I had to use special safety equipment to blend it with the base fuel I used. Over at Shell they were so impressed that they offered to run tests on the fuels at their refinery in Rotterdam (NE). They tested it and they gave it it's own lable, which was very cool. They told me that my fuel was of very high quality, and they could sell it for a very high price per liter. That is also the reason it is not available at gas stations, because very few people would actually use fuel that is that expensive. But after all, I scored a 10 on my project so I'm happy :).

I'd buy VP leaded race gas for them, not so much for the octane but the lead for extra lubricant. I've had Banshee engines last years and years and still have spec compression.

    I used to go get AV gas from the airport for my 125. Made a noticeable difference but I had to mix with pump gas otherwise it would flame out all the time sometimes randomly or not run at all just about. Even half and half was too much but found around 30-35% AV gas was perfect mix. Ended up getting a CDI that was tuned for race fuel, didn't notice top end difference but better down lower but most importantly didn't flame out.

    I bought an 05 Subaru Outback XT and ran it on 87 for about the first 3 months I had it. Also bought it after it sat for a year and didn't change the oil for like 3 or 4 thousand miles, literally more than a recommended oil interval on sludge, until it consumed a turbine. Replaced that with a $180 ebay turbo that leaked boost and exhaust at the coupling between the turbine and compressor sides and didn't really fit so I couldn't fasten all 5 studs with nuts and it leaked there too. Hell, the inlet tube was ripped to shit too. Basically the result was a turbo that acted basically as a complicated piece of exhaust pipe and I lost about 100% of my boost. Then one of my valves unseated and I lost compression too. For some reason boost came back 100% about a year later and I had a ton of power for about 2 weeks before the starter gave out. So I pulled the engine in my driveway, ripped it apart, got a bunch of new shit, spent $1400 at the machine shop, put it back together and proceeded to hydrolock a head bolt and strip the threads clean out of the block. Making it a boat anchor. Sold that whole fucking car for $75, the cats for $120. Still got the heads tho... I have learned much and more from that Subaru, and bought a Jeep Cherokee 4.0L because they're N/A and indestructible. Fuck turbos on anything you drive daily, they're not worth it.

I was driving a 1976 F100 with a 300 straight 6, not exactly a high compression engine. The gas gauge said unleaded only but the tank would take any kind of pump. I don't think it had a cat. I know it was carbureted (had a tiny Carter 1 barrel). It actually ran better on premium than it did on 87. All I can figure is the 87 was actually lower than that, so the 93 actually had enough octane. BTW it is comon that gas has less octane than the pump sticker says. States are supposed to check but most do a bad job of it.

    87 is easier to ignite and has more energy than the 93 95 98. and thats why its used in high comp and turbo/super charged engines. the exhaust valve and spark plug get very hot and sharp places on the head all can cause preignition and damage the engine. things like valve over lap where both valves are open together at the same time will cool down the exhaust valve and plug helping with preigniton esspecially with a turbo/super charger because they really blow the air through. but you have to get a very good tune or the ox senser will cause the system to add more gas direct injection has this advantage where you can have valve over lap without wasting fuel. even with the issue of getting dirty that can be helped with a catch tank.

    Higher octane is simply to prevent pinking/pre-detonation on high compression engines cos the heat generated by the compression can cause the fuel to ignite before the spark, kinda like a diesel engine, messing up timing and messing up the pistons and valves. Edit - I've only got about halfway through, but I'm shocked that wasn't mentioned already. Edit 2 - got to the end, but literally 1 mention of knock (which is the same as pinking/detonation). I appreciate the explanation of the higher base stock quality etc for race fuel though.

    Unless you have a very high compression dirt bike, you're not going to gain anything running anything more than 87 or 89 octane (or whatever your bike lists for what is required), just a giant waste of money. The only exception is when you get ethanol-free race fuel. Technically, 10% ethanol pump gas produces about 3% less HP per unit of fuel than 100% gas does, so on a non-fuel injected engine, that could translate to a couple HP.

    Worth mentioning that there are different measures of octane rating. Main ones are Research Octane Number (RON) and Motor Octane Number (MON), and as a rule of thumb the MON figure for a fuel is 10 points lower than the RON figure. Most of the world uses the RON rating. The USA uses the Pump Octane Number (PON), which is the average of the RON and MON figures. So by the above rule of thumb the PON figure will be 5 points lower than the RON rating. So USA 91 octane fuel is about the same as a fuel labelled 96 octane through most of the world.

    Split the difference: Get an ethanol sensor, piggyback ecu, and tune it for E85 (pump gas on par with some race fuels). Note: may need larger fuel injectors and parallel fuel pumps

    what about sedans that have a suggestion of 91 but able to take 87? does it matter? what benefits would i get if i were to run 91 on an engine that pretty much takes all gas? would i see better mileage and engine performance?

  • @romanduran4829
    @romanduran48293 жыл бұрын

    At the pump it says regular, mid grade, and premium, so it’s easy to assume one is better than the other. That being said, is it ok to have half a tank of 87 and then fill the rest up with 93? Or should you always just stick to one the whole time?

    I am living at Europe and even sometimes driving on German Autobahn with a Jeep Renegade 1.4 Turbo 170 hbp. I prefer RON98 E5 instead of RON95 E10. It gives a significant better mileage. Some gas stations at German Autobahn have RON100 E5 (racing fuel), the Jeep runs fine on it. Warning for turbo users, let your oil heat up before kicking it and also give it a few minutes cooling down by idling before stopping the engine when the turbo did it's job. Unfortunately I had a turbo replacement at 90.000 km. Garage said, not my fault.

    Interesting I use race gas in my 10:1 compression ratio Jeep SRT8 and it reduces short knock to zero and I'm about 2/10ths of a second faster down the 1/4th mile. I don't have a race gas tune but I am on a 94 octane tune (Petro Canada sells 94 where I live).

  • @guysteel

    @guysteel

    That's an excellent use for "race" gas. It will reduce or eliminate the retarding of the timing due to heat and engine loading during drag racing. Which would reduce power. Especially if you make back to back runs on a hot night without time to thoroughly cooling the engine. Higher octane unleaded fuel gives you an added level of safety against reduced power from knock.

    Not the same index, I had to check on Wikipedia. Europe uses RON (a simulation based on low regime) while US uses AKO (a simulation based on between low and high regime : AKI = (RON + MON)/2 , MON being high regime octane). You have : 95MON = 90AKI and 98RON=93MON

    Over here in germany a cheap price for gas is around 1,50€/Liter which is about 6.7$/us gallon. Pretty expencive and prices will go up. You would be really really lucky to find gas stations with a price of under 6.7$/us gallon.

    QUESTION: So is there any difference in gas mileage between a gas like Chevron (with Techroline) and your basic "cheap" gas at your basic mini Mart?
