    The pride of Rockford. Criminally underrated band. Enormous talent. Nielsen and Bun E. stack up against any guitarist and drummer in rock history. These guys hit the big time and still drove around to gigs in a station wagon. Grounded, cooler than cool, and flat out a great band.

    MOST DFN8LY!!!!!!!!! Have LOVED these geniuses since jump street, IMHO these are America's Beatles, The best "trick" they played on us all was disguising their combined musical GENIUS behind a dorky bubble gum facade, I'm talking Rick and Bun E. and Robin's lyrical prowess is simply amaze balls.And Tom can slap da bass with the best of em.

    That's true. I think it's because in the 1980's looks was important. The other two members were oddball even though both Rick & Bun E are excellent musicians. Robin and Tom fits the '80s looks. Nevertheless this band was one of my favorite.

    I've seen them play live twice. They were phenomenal and well-received by the audience. They've had five Top 40 albums, 8 Top 40 songs (including a Number 1), and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. That said, I think they are rated "just right" - not over or under.

    Robin Zander has always been such a classy guy. NEVER hogged the spotlight from his bandmates. A rare quality in a man born so physically beautiful. I remember watching this live when I was kid, wondering where the heck Robin was, and was just amazed to see him stroll in nonchalantly from the back when it was time for him to sing. I'd never seen them live before this TV broadcast (saw my first live concert of theirs a couple of months after this TV show aired) so I had no real idea that he was known for standing back and letting his bandmates do their thing. What a class act!!!

    I knew Rick Nielson before Cheap Trick, when he was with The Grim Reapers. He was an outstanding guitar player even back then, 1967 or so. We called him, because of course we did, Screaming Chicken. He was and I'm sure still is a really good guy and a tremendous showman. He tore the house down with their version of Stravinski's Firebird. Hot guitar, man. Hot guitarman. I wonder if he remembers any of that. I haven't seen him in 50 years and he still seems like a friend. Also, his unique stage persona is a take on Sach from The Bowery Boys. You have to be a geezer to know that.

    Vastly underrated band!! That opening ROCKED. These fellas like the Romantics never disappoint live or on vinyl. A true blue collar, down to the bones ROCK BAND. The drummer is a bad a$$ and he knows it. The same applies to the no nonsense bass guitarist. Robin has a voice that caresses darn near any lyric as if he OWNS it. As for checker shirt, major SWAG and confidence.

    Man, this is back in the day!! I remember the girls would go nuts for Tom and Robin! And man did they know it...lol. Even back in the early 70's when they were playing bars around Rockford, DeKalb and Beloit, you could never get near the stage because of the girls. I remember thinking even back then that Tom was a heck of a bass player and Rick was a heck of a guitar player. I was too dumb to realize back then that Bun E. was an incredible drummer as well. Who would have known that Zander would still have the pipes in 2014 and 15?? Amazing band...should have been in the RRHOF years ago.

    MrMike9158 LOL so true about the girls. Major crush on Robin and Tom when I was a teen. Still crushing actually. Robin, The Flame, the voice, so incredible. I agree with you re: RRHOF. Robin Long Hi Robin. If you know one of the judges/ballot voters for the RRHOF...PLEASE ask them how this incredibly original band that has influenced so many other bands over the years can not be in the HOF already. Phenomenal vocalist and rhythm guitar player, vastly under-rated lead guitarist/song writer, great bassist and inventor of the 12 string bass and one of the most solid drummers in rock who completed the image of this iconic band. Over the years, this band touched on punk, pop, rock, ballads and metal and knew no limits. They deserve the HOF so much more than bands like Run DMC and acts like Madonna. Shameful. Thanks for posting with me Robin.

  • @Robin-xt7yo

    @Robin-xt7yo

    MrMike9158 I totally agree MrMike! Each of the 4 guys are solid and unique. As you've said, CT influenced many bands that came after them. They sound original and fresh, not a clone of other bands. I was shaking my head when I saw a certain band with the initials GD being inducted into the RRHOF. I mean really, GD over CT? Yes GD has mass popularity but hardly sounds original! I do like some of GD's stuff, but is it really RRHOF level? Hmmmm. Yes, I will ask this judge next time I see him why this happened. Like a lot of ballot box things, politics must be having too much influence. Record companies flexing their muscles. "Ain't that A Shame". Yes it is.

  • @MrMike9158

    @MrMike9158

    9 жыл бұрын

    Robin Long Hey Robin, thanks for posting. In my humble opinion, Rolling Stone magazine and their publisher Jann Wenner has had way too much sway over the RRHOF for years. And you are so right about politics having too much influence on the HOF (as well as every other part of life...lol). So many bands and artists who were either influential to Rolling Stone's "roots" or were Rolling Stone "media darlings" have gotten in over more deserving bands. GD was always one of those "media darlings" that Rolling Stone loved to put on their cover. But yet, it took Kiss, a band with 100 million in record sales over 20 years to get in because Rolling Stone never considered them or their music "relevant". And believe me, I'm no big fan of Kiss myself, but you need to give credit where it is due. Journey...80 million plus in record sales. Def Leppard....90 million plus in record sales. Styx...first band EVER to have five consecutive multi-platinum albums (even The Beatles and the Stones never accomplished that. And an influential band like Cheap Trick who can still deliver the goods 40 years after they started??? It is CRAZY. Personally, I had a script to Rolling Stone for several years but cancelled it over my lack of respect it has given rock artists over the years. Take care Robin and thanks for posting to me.

Robin taught me how to golf at Sinnissippi golf course in 1983. We still go back at Xmas to see family, we live in Florida now, but occasionally see Rick. Part of his family is Kurt( RIP) who was one of the Iranian hostages in the late 70's early 80's that Reagan freed. They used to go into a bar on Main/Auburn called The Barn and play a few songs with the house band. For a shit city, my hometown, we at least had Cheap Trick and REO Speedwagon.

    I remember watching this on TV in 1980; it was a Friday night and it was cold outside. Some of the memories that I recall: 1) Surprised that they were not dressed in tuxedos 2) Why is their accountant the drummer too 3) Taken aback by Rick's stage antics and checkerboard pattern "overload" 4) Assumed the blonde one was sick and that they were playing an instrumental 4) Totally blown away when I realized they were preforming a Fats Domino's classic. I told my family they had missed the best rendition of ATAS I had ever heard. I gushed about them to my friends at school on Monday. One last fashion note: Robin's suit was quite avant garde for the times - this was still the era of the leisure suit.

    If you've never seen them live, you've never seen a rock n roll show. They are without a doubt THEE BEST LIVE BAND EVER! My brother and I and a few friends would see them before they made it, at a bar in North Chicago called Night Gallery. God damn were those ever great shows. Rick would come over and play foosball with me and my buddy during their breaks. Really a nice guy. ROCK ON GUYS!

    @@BonnieK80 Those were the best shows I've seen. They rocked the house down every night they were there. It's almost like two different bands, on records, and live. records were good, Live was incredible. no comparison.

    Yes agree ☺️ Have a few of their albums and like the record in the studio format…feels like how it was created at that time But have also seen them live a few times over the years and man can they rock or bring a performance home🙌🖤🤍

    I lived this as it happened and this was "Pop" music in the 70's. A lot of people laughed at Cheap Trick but they did not understand that Pop music can rock.

    Haven't seen any other bass guitar like that - wicked. Nice to see them playing live at daryl's house recently and still sound great.
