    Are your files being stored safely? I remember one time having several thousand dollars of 'unfinished' projects in the process of being edited. They were being stored on my SSD with 1 backup on a slower hard drive. Good to go right?? Realizing how much $ was at stake, that was the day I started to get more serious about finding a backup solution that worked well for me that included both several local backups, the cloud, as well as check sum software to verify the transfers. When it comes to backups, better extra safe than extra sorry. If that story sounds like you - this might be a helpful video :) *Update note: Several folks have mentioned reliability issues with both Sandisk and WD. While this video is primarily about the 'Process' rather than the Gear, I think it is important to note those other comments here. To date, I have never had an issue with my Sandisk SSD's, however they were purchased several years ago. As far as WD, I have bought a few recently but again have not personally had any issues with them. As there is always a level of risk involved, this is all the more reason to have a backup workflow like this in place. If you are investing in drives for the first time, do some current research as to what folks are noting as reliable but always always always have multiple copies. Hope that helps!

    Like the sandisk scandal is showing, reputable brands can screw up. Not only should you pick a brand/product with a good reputation, but if you are buying multitude drives anyway, better buy from several brands. This way you can be a lot safer if a certain product line is known to be faulty years down the road.

    great video man 👏👏 I'd never heard of offshoot but that looks like a really cool piece of software! Being a one-time purchase is also a bonus 👏 I need to step up my storage/archiving game lol And the dropbox part of the video showcasing the ability to transfer to clients is great, I don't think I've seen that before so that's definitely something I could use 🤔 👍

    Great video to stumble upon. I really enjoyed this, subscribed. What is your process for handling audio? I.e. From Raw audio to finished product, what does that look like for you? I quite enjoyed the clarity and isolation of your setup! I've been recording into Logic for VoiceOver and haven't been able to master that *crisp*

    Thanks so much! Happy to have you here. As far as audio, this was the MKE 600 running into a Tascam DR-10L set to Auto. Post processing wise it was done in Resolve with their stock plugins on the track level. FX chain is the Voice Isolator (100%), Light EQ mainly cleaning up the low end, Some compression via the dynamics option, light De-Esser, and then a limiter to bring up the gain at the end of the chain. If you want more specifics, feel free to DM me on insta and I can get you more exact settings for all that :)

    Yo! Yeah not a fun thing to spend money on for sure. I rock the 512gb Angelbird CF Express B Card and then dual record to a Sandisk Extreme Pro 512gb SD Card (Just the V30 Version as I usually am shooting 200mpbs). I personally do not like the Ninja V (image quality) and do not externally record (one more potential thing to fail / have to think about). I record internally and use the AndyCine A6Plus V2 as my monitor. Everyone has a different workflow but hope that helps!

    Appreciate you chiming in with that! I did hear recently about more failures with certain models that were being sold at extreme discounts at some retailers for Black Friday, prime day, etc. I paid full price for mine at best buy several years back and have had no issues with both my 1TB and 2TB models. That said, it's my recommendation simply because I have used it and have had no issues, along with several close friends of mine. Glad to have a note of that here in the comments for folks who are trying to figure out what is best for them!

    Haha yeah not my fav thing to spend money on either however with the $$$$ of some of the projects I am working on, it's the peace of mind for me. Using 'check-sum' software like this is doing more for you than just simply copying the files. As far as WD/Sandisk, I have never had any issues but yes have heard of some as of recent. All the more reason to have a backup plan in place like the one in this video :) What is your process and what brands do you prefer?

  • @noenken

    @noenken

    I guess it's a business expense of sorts, yeah. It's just baffling to me how a gui for a basic function and some MD5 verification isn't something that just exists freely. Couple years back WD started to sell shingled HDDs as NAS drives ... without really being upfront about the change. (For the non-datahoarder: shingled drives are just about the worst idea to use as NAS drives ever and the failure rates did prove that not long after. It led to lost data in quite a few cases. ... but it was cheap, yay) The Sandisk SSD mess is still ongoing and they are handling it by not talking about it or downplaying it. They also did not pull the drives off the shelves for a long time, I'm not sure if they ever did. There was other problems inbetween but I don't have their whole history at the top of my head. But at this point it has to be called a pattern and I would highly advise against using WD at all. I currently have a very basic setup for backups with a synology NAS (filled with seagate Exos drives) acting as timemachine and I intend to set up periodic online backups for that to something like backblaze ... soon™. If I'd make money with data my first copy target would be a ZFS machine, something running trueNAS probably. But I just take pictures for myself. @@blasepivovar
