Cheap Bentley Turbo R Project! What Could POSSIBLY Go Wrong?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We've all seen those ads for temptingly cheap Bentleys, but should you buy one? Our colleagues at Classics World pulled the trigger on a 1990 Turbo R (sight-unseen during the lockdown of 2020, we might add!) to find out if you can own, fix and use a cheap Bentley yourself...

To answer some FAQs... .COST: Including the purchase of the car, all parts (new and used, bought from Flying Spares) and labour, the Turbo R owed us around £15,000. .FUEL ECONOMY: We managed 15MPG (18.8L/100KM or 12.5MPG US) on a run, as little as 6MPG (47L/100KM or 5MPG US) in town... .DIY: Every job on these cars - except hydraulics-related - can be done from home by the keen DIYer, just make sure you've got the hefty sockets and spanners the Bentley requires. COSTS: These cars are temptingly cheap, but brace yourself for expensive parts, hefty thirst and tyres that are £250+ EACH! If you're happy to spin spanners yourself, though, you can save a fortune in specialist labour.

Interesting, but I would like to have seen a cost breakdown. All that labour could have been very expensive.

Back in the day, I knew the driver for the CEO of a large Auatralian bank. I think it was Wheels magazine wanted to do a road test and York (Aus dist) Motors wouldn't allow some magazine hack drive a brand new Turbo R and the only recognised/ RR certified chauffeur was my mate, so they got him to do the road test. Hat and uniform, the works. He loved it.

Very well done on the rear bumper job looks very fair! Fabulous cars, reasonable to buy, but maintenance can be expensive if not doing it yourself, the brake pipe issue fairly common and if the car is over 60k miles the head gaskets can be a big and expensive issue. Driving is glorious so the down issues are made up with the up feeling of driving these fabulous cars that have so much road presence.

Cylinder head gasket can be an expensive repair. Make sure coolant is fresh and the strongest mixture.

Rollers have always been known to rust as badly as they do.In fact I would place a bet that in the 70,s and 80,s they rotted as quickly as a Ford did. They were built I think to be premium but not to still be on the road 10 years down the line because that defeated the point somewhat.

Truly rich people view these cars as just another car, a stylish device to get from A to B, and RR/Bentley (all of the upper echelon manufacturers really) understands that concept, knowing that these cars will be sold on fairly quickly, with little regard for the 2nd owner and beyond. The disregard for durability and reliability with HUGE markups for basic maintenance and repair parts is the reason these cars are generally worthless down the road and appear to be "cheap" to purchase. German cars used to be TANKS, engineered to last. That's LONG gone. And now that RR and Bentley are now German cars, forget it. The Continental W12 is a wonderful engine once it's rebuilt properly to get rid of all the plastic crap from the engine. But, from the factory, they are built-in-obsolescence machines. RR's may not rust out now due to a 100% aluminum structure, but the engine is based upon the BMW V12 with the same shortcomings, but at least it's simpler to repair in general.

Can you do the same thing on a first or second year Tesla Model S? Those thihgs are monstrously impressive and kind of interesting. And, at least in the United States, used ones are getting less expensive, tempting!

@@alancrisp1582 Made my driving license on a SS2 when I was an exchange pupil in the late 80s. That has spoiled me for any other car - on reason why I prefer to ride motorcycles and don’t own a car 😇 SS can be found here in Germany in running conditions with 2year TÜV (MOT) for 10-20.000€, but I fear the running cost and the problems you might buy with a low end car that has been brought down by dozens of owners.
